Looks like Constantine will make about $33-$35 million for the weekend. Hitch held very well. No one was interested in the family releases.

That's great for Constantine. I was expecting around 16 or 17 million and it looks to double that. That movie looks damn good. Son Of The Mask didn't do anything, like everyone thought. All though it should've made 900,000 for Friday in my eyes.

not that bad of legs for hitch, considering valentines day has passed

Weekend Estimates:
1. Hitch - 31 Million/90 Million
2. Constantine - 30 Million/30 Million
3. Because Of Winn-Dixie - 10 Million/10 Million
4. Son Of The Mask - 7 Million/7 Million
5. Million Dollar Baby - 7 Million/54 Million
6. Are We There Yet? - 6 Million/69 Million
7. Boogeyman - 5 Million/41 Million
8. Pooh's Heffalump Movie - 4 Million/11 Million
9. The Aviator - 4 Million/88 Million
10. Sideways - 3 Million/58 Million
Hitch had a great hold and really picked up on Saturday. Son Of The Mask costed over 100 Million dollars according to Box Office Mojo so it bombed terribly.

Son Of The Mask debuted in a position 10 numbers higher than what I was expecting it to.

I'm glad families decided to watch Because of Winn-Dixie instead of Son of the Mask since I have no doubt that it's infinantly better. Infact, it's a pretty good movie.
Seriously, you guys should check it out.

I'm surprised Because of Winn-Dixie made that much. I haven't seen any advertising for it at all, hadn't even heard about it till a few days ago

Yeah , good job by that Winn Dixie movie , it does look " cute " and not in a sacharrine way . Doesn't seem to have a bunch of pop culture references or bathroom humor either ( or does it ? ) , i'd like to see more films like this make some noise at the box office .
After Friday's numbers i figured Con would have taken the top spot , but it only had a 100,000 dollar increase on Saturday and the usual drop off on Sunday , whereas Hitch had a nice jump on Saturday , that's what put it over the top . If it makes anyone feel any better , for the weekend , Con had a higher per screen than Hitch , and it was in 500 or so less theaters , as far as i'm concerned , it did beat it . Still a nice , albeit not anything at all surprising hold for Hitch , and an excellent opening for Con . Nothing great , but for an R rated film , that's very nice . I thought it could have hit at least 35 mil , but again , the Saturday take hurt it's chances to do that . Any R rated " horror " film that can come close or hit a 30 mil opening is good news , we need more of them . I don't see good legs for it though , not with Cursed coming out next weekend , a pg 13 Wes Craven horror flick being released in 3000 theaters .

I agree dd. Even if Constantine fell behind Hitch over the weekend, it's still an impressive opening. You had a fairly obscure comic, an R rating and a star who is not a box office guarantee. I'm sure WB is pleased. But you're right, it will probably suffer the standard 50% drop next weekend. A little sidenote: I believe Hitch and Constantine cost almost the same amount of $ to produce, which is kind of crazy. I know Hitch cost about $70 million, and I read somewhere over the weekend that Constantine was in that range as well. Winn Dixie was very cheap to make so it's going to do fine. I will never pay to see a movie that has Dave Matthews in it, but that's just me.

Believe it or not, Dave Mathews is actually pretty good in the movie.

Sorry, but I detest the man and his band, and I just have zero desire to see him in a movie, especially a kid's movie. Just not my cup of tea. I'll pass.

I don't really care about Dave Matthews, I doubt him being in a picture would really deter me from seeing anything because I don't like his band.
However, apparently "Because of Winn-Dixie" is a very popular children's novel that won the Newberry award for best novel a couple of years back. It has since gained a nice cult following between parents and children alike, something I didn't know until I made fun of the film yesterday.
I don't intend on seeing it or reading the book, personally I think the film looks like it was done poorly, and I don't get a kick out of a smiling dog... but hey, that's just me. But I at least have an understanding and can see the how's and why's it actually smacked up some good numbers on opening weekend.

Actually, he was the only reason I would see it. But I see your view.

Cursed is being heavily promoted on MTV , i look for it to break the 30 mil mark , and take the top spot . It doesnt look half bad , but im not exactly in a rush to go out and see it , it' a rental . I guess i could always go see another film and sneak in to Cursed after , the theater i go to makes it so easy , they don't even care , at least during the day they don't . The kid from Rodger Dodger is in this , i'm curious to see how effective he is in this one , he was great in RD .
And Mad , once again , you can prob chalk up the bloated budget for Hitch to the fact they filmed it in Manhattan , one of the most expensive places to make a film in the world . Then you figure Smith got a nice chunk , and maybe even James , he has some clout becuase of his sitcom , but mainly it's all the permits and union fees a production will have to deal with that jacks up the price of movies made in Manhattan .
I don't blame the studios for going to Canada to save some money , but i do like when something is actually shot in NYC , it's always nice to see some familiar territory . With some new tax breaks , look for more films to be made here .

Oh I know location filming in NYC is expensive, but I can't help but be somewhat shocked when I read that something like Hitch cost $70 million.

Yea 68 mill of it went to getting Smith on the roster though, the other 2 went to getting someone to keep all those damn pigeons out of the shots. All the rest was just stuff they had lying around. I've heard good things about this flick and still wanna check it out though, should I for $7.50?
