Anyone who thinks that Edward Norton is a better actor than Marlon Brando hasn't seen Brando at his best. Which Brando films have you seen? Norton is undeniably a talented actor, usually better than the film he's in. But I sincerely believe that he hasn't been in a great film yet. He was great in both PRIMAL FEAR and AMERICAN HISTORY X, but both were glorified TV movies. FIGHT CLUB has its fans. I'm not one of them. If you still insist that Edward Norton is better, then you don't know that you don't know good acting.

I was offended by the,if you think EN is a better actor than MB you should be committed, crack.

I realize it was not made by you.

But I still stand by my statement, and here's why...

When it comes to delivering a believable performance alot of factors come into play. The most important, I believe is the ability to lose one's self in the role. To drop your own mannerism's and adopt those of the character you are playing.

Another factor is range, the ability to play a wide range of diverse personality types and make us believe them.

Another important factor is to avoid self indulgence and only do that which aids in the delivery of the performance.

You made the point that two of Norton's movies were glorified T.V. movies. That statement even if true (which I don't think it is) has nothing to do with a performance being credible or not.

I have (by the way) seen every movie Marlon Brando has ever been in. He was a talented actor, who, while he had potential, never reached the heights he could have.

The reasons he never reached those heights, I beleive is because he never fit the criteria I listed above for what constitutes a credible performance and I believe that Norton always has.

But, of course, it is only my opinion and as we all know acting, like any other artistic medium is very subjective.

P.S. I also think that alot of people give Brando, more respect than he deserves because of his reputation, which was largely earned back in the days when most actors were comparativly wooden and he was a breath of fresh air.

*Every* actor has mannerisms that become more familiar through time. The advantage of a relative newcomer like Norton is that his mannerisms aren't that obvious yet. Still, I've started noticing him repeat certain facial expressions and line readings. But that's beside the point. Good acting is not about becoming totally invisible physically (plenty of makeup and costume changes would do that) or adapting new mannerisms. That's what a mimic or an impersonator does (no way would Rich Little be considered a great actor). Acting is about conveying the truth of a character through specific and nuanced intellectual and emotional responses.

Another factor is range, the ability to play a wide range of diverse personality types and make us believe them.

I believe that Brando has had a wider range of believable performances.

Another important factor is to avoid self indulgence and only do that which aids in the delivery of the performance.

What do you mean by self-indulgence?

You made the point that two of Norton's movies were glorified T.V. movies. That statement even if true (which I don't think it is) has nothing to do with a performance being credible or not.

I agree. Talented actors like Norton do have the capacity to rise above mediocre material. I was merely stating that Norton's body of work is not yet the equal of Brando's.

I have (by the way) seen every movie Marlon Brando has ever been in. He was a talented actor, who, while he had potential, never reached the heights he could have.

That may be so, but what great heights they were. Certainly higher than most who've already reached their potential.

The reasons he never reached those heights, I beleive is because he never fit the criteria I listed above for what constitutes a credible performance and I believe that Norton always has.

I disagree with you. And so would Norton who constantly mentions Brando as a major influence in his acting career.

But, of course, it is only my opinion and as we all know acting, like any other artistic medium is very subjective.

And, like any art, acting is a craft that's governed by principles and methods that one needs to learn to be good at it. You may like Adam Sandler but to call him a great actor would be a total falsehood.

P.S. I also think that alot of people give Brando, more respect than he deserves because of his reputation, which was largely earned back in the days when most actors were comparativly wooden and he was a breath of fresh air.

He may have earned his reputation in the old days but he has lived up to it in his more recent performances in LAST TANGO IN PARIS and THE GODFATHER. The same could probably be said about Edward Norton. He came out of nowhere to amaze us in PRIMAL FEAR. People were looking for the next Brando or the next De Niro and here was this young kid no one's heard of. He continued to impress us with his performances in AMERICAN HISTORY X and FIGHT CLUB, but they're still looking for the next Brando or the next De Niro. He hasn't had the same impact or influence as his predecessors. Now they think the heir to Brando or De Niro is Russell Crowe, who also happens to mention both Brando and De Niro as his mentors.

Well, i think it's way too early to tell how much of an impact he will have, and i do belive he hasn't had his career defining role yet, IMO. But maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.

OK, I gotta clear up a few things, obviously.

When I talked of mannerisms, I meant that an actor should exclude those mannerisms that did not fit his character. I was not emplying that an actor was a mimic.

When I spoke of someone losing himself in a role, I did not mean physically, rather, I meant developing a complete and believable caharacter. Sometimes that includes physical changes and sometimes not.

You wondered what I meant by self indulgence, so I will tell you. In the Missouri breaks, Brando switches from an Irish accent, to english and to god knows what else thru the course of the movie. In the Bounty he plays Flecther Christian as a fop, and while I am sure he enjoys mixing accents and lisping, it does not help the audience understand his characters motivations.

While I liked his work in the Godfather, it was hardly awe inspiring. As for him being good now, he should have retired twenty years ago. All he does now is turn up to collect his pay cheque.

As for people saying their still waiting for the next Brando, good for them. That sort of statment is used to sell copy and nothing more.

Everything I have stated is my opinion, nothing more. Just like everything you have said is your opinion and nothing more. Accountancy, carpentry and bricklaying are crafts that follow rules, without which they cannot work. Acting is an art form, the only criteria for judging it's succes is whether or not an actors performance hit's you in the guts as being authentic. And it doesn't matter what technique they used to get them to their truth.

There may or not be people who consider Adam Sandler to be a great actor. I don't know and I don't care. Because that is their opinion. The point I am trying to make is simply, what is great to one is not to another.

You brought up two of his lesser performances. But when he's at his best (LAST TANGO IN PARIS, STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, ON THE WATERFRONT, GODFATHER, to name a few), there's no one better. As for Norton, he's already showing signs of slowing down in his relatively young career. His performance in THE SCORE, althought entertaining, echoes his turn in PRIMAL FEAR. And I found him pretty bland in the woefully misguided DEATH TO SMOOCHY.

Acting is an art form, the only criteria for judging it's succes is whether or not an actors performance hit's you in the guts as being authentic. And it doesn't matter what technique they used to get them to their truth.[/b]

How effective or "authentic" a performance is depends on how skilled the actor is in applying whatever technique he's using. Even instinctive actors like Nicholson use certain techniques to get to the truth of his character. There are other factors to consider: the viewer's age, sex, experience (real and reel), etc..

The point I am trying to make is simply, what is great to one is not to another.

The point I'm trying to make is simply, what makes a performance great to one is not what makes it great to another. It's the difference between a mature filmgoer and an immature filmgoer.

Good to hear your opinion again.

It is all opinion, that is why these boards exist in the first place. So people can express their opinion on a subjective topic.

Or maybe I'm wrong. Maybe what makes a
performance great to one person and not another is the difference between a level headed realistic moviegoer and a pretentious moviegoer
