View Full Version : Robin Williams: attention whore

I waited for the longest time to see the return of Real Time with Bill Maher. He's a voice of sanity amongst a sea of propaganda and talking points. Then I cringed when I heard Robin Williams was going to be on. I think he's a wonderful actor, I've loved him in The Fisher King, Good Will Hunting and One Hour Photo. But the guy cannot not be the center of attention. Sure enough he talked incessantly, kept interrupting Joe Biden, Don Cheadle and Maher. He did his impressions, gay voice, foreign accents, little schizo skits where he has entire coversations with himself, yada yada yada. You've seen it once, you've seen it a million times. The man is just a trainwreck and an attention whore of the worst kind. He doesn't know when to shut up and is consistently rude, pitching in with inane background noises for no reason whatsoever. He can't control himself, like a fat kid in a candy store, he keeps blabbing on and on until you just want to cover your ears and scream to drown out his voice. Fucking wanker.

I noticed that too... I thought it's sort of a maniacal crazy/creative genious thing (but maybe more of a charade, since the same thing happens continually)... But now that you mention it continually happens, and I've seen more than one interview where he does all the things you've mentioned Bake... S'true, he is a bit rude, and I think he trys WAY too fucking hard to be funny.... I've heard the rumour once that he is an alien, along with John Tesh... I wouldn't argue that point at all! :p

He actually has ADHD -- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

If he took ritalin or some other drug to control it, he wouldn't be famous.

If they don't like how he acts on his disorder, he should stop being invited.

Why is everyone into Real Time all of a sudden now that I don't have my HBO anymore? It's been my favorite show since its inception.

Anyways, I hear you man. I think he's a good actor with considerable range. But his comedy is AWFUL. It's that "stream of concsiousness" crap that's just him acting like a retard and like pulling shirts over his head and walking around like Charlie Chaplin and going (in funny voice) "M, m look at me, I'm Richard Nixon's bodyguard" or some crap, and people are falling on the floor laughing, usually middle aged white moms. I watch it and I'm like "What??" The hell is funny about that?

I'm glad that guy pointed it out, I thought for the longest time he has some kind of ADD, at least there's some explanation. And on the other hand, look how wired he is 24-7, it makes you think how much effort it took for him to do such a subdued and calculating role the way he did in Insomnia.

I watched him on Actor's Studio and he was just ridiculous. Only theater people would laugh at that shit.

I'm not a theater person and I think he's hilarious. Attention whore or not, his appearances are always fun to watch.

Ditto to Jim Carrey.

Agreed again...everyone knows what he's like. If they didn't want Robin Williams being Robin Williams, they shouldn't have invited him.

I personally think people abuse of problems like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and use them like an excuse to be idiots. So i generally do not like williams at all, i think he's more annoying than funny and except maybe 1 hour photo do not find hims performances as super-spectacular as everyone make them out to be.

Yeah, and I get sick of people with Parkinson's disease feeling like they have an excuse to squirm.

Michael J. Fox should settle the fuck down.

Wow - thanks for the enlightenment. Who knew my little bro was fooling us all those years go? You did! I'm sure he'll be bummed now that the secret is out how his ADHD was an "excuse" to "be an idiot." And to think, he took Ritalin for six years. Ha - isn't that hilarious?

That's a damn shame.

Anyway, Robin Williams uses his affliction as a crutch. He knows nobody is going to tell him to be quiet and sit down because they will seem insensitive to ADHD sufferers. So he goes all out to be as annoying and intrusive as he possibly can and succeeds. I'd rather he take his pills and shut his yapper. Jim Carrey is nowhere near as aggravating to watch because he actually listens to questions and despite all his rubber faces, will answer them eventually. All Williams does is go off on random tangents about his scrotum. Why does he get invited on shows? Because people are under the impression that he's funny, and so his name is a big draw for ratings purposes.

Curiously enough, I only enjoy Carrey and Williams in their dramatic turns.

Me too. Isn't that veerd?

Seriously, I wonder if it's kind of an "appreciate the yin because of the yang" thing. You know, like the intense, darker stuff is only possible because of the uber-light, goofy shit they do. I've always heard that comics are the most serious people in the world when they're not doing their schtick.

... Well, as one of the 'walking afflicted', I can tell you that I've never used my disorder as an excuse to act out. I do know that a lot of creative people with any type of mental disorder purposely avoid medication because it can kill creativity. (And believe me - it does.) I think there is a happy medium though: and it can be achieved with the right doses. From what I've read, Robin Williams denies having any kind of mental disorder; but it is glaringly obvious that he does. He is getting too old to be so flippin' manic and it's gotta be wearing thin... He is a complete energy vampire... (You know what I mean: those people who are so damn hyper that they suck your energy right outta you until you are exhausted just being around them - and it only makes them stronger...)

I never said all people, im sure you're brother truly suffers from a mental abnormality, i just think many people ( regardless of whenever or not they actually have the mental problem ) abuse it and get away with anything they want because americans are too politically correct. Such a case is Robin Williams.

Well.... this whole country is just a little too PC about a lot of things anymore... it's getting to the point where you can't say anything about anyone without "offending" them or getting slapped with a lawsuit.

I say "yup and yup" to that, Bird poop. You're right, it's fucking ridiculous the way things are nowadays. Half the people on this message board are as PC and ultra-liberal as it gets, it's really annoying.

Check this out for a second - I think Robin Williams just has a gimmick, it's not much more than that.

I don't think we need to bring up or discuss the effects of mental and mood disorders in "people" just to explain that we think Williams is a twat.

Besides, before we all start playing armchair psychatrist -- keep in mind that many of Williams' behaviors are a long term result of chronic cocaine abuse. And while he denies having a mental health problem, he readily admits to heavy and frequent cocaine use during a developmental stage in his life.

I'm in agreeance with all who enjoy his act. Yeah, he's a one trick pony, but I buy into it.

Also -- aren't all celebrities "attention whores" by definition? ie. they are paid to garner attention. The less attention they get, the less they are paid.....

King of Depew

Um, we do need to bring it up, if ADHD is the reason he's so hyper and makes him act like a nut, synapses firing like a stock ticker...

You're damn right he did coke. He and De Niro did the last 8 ball with Belushi before he croaked.

"Next week: Frued, and how he did enough cocaine to kill a small horse."
