What movie got all sorts of praise from critics and audiences that you think it just didn't deserve? For me it's hands down Shrek. Followed closely by the Others.

I'd hafta disagree with you on those 2. Those are the two highest rated movies of the year for me... Well The Others is the only 10/10 I've given this year, and Shrek is the #3 or 4 movie of the year for me, Behind Harry Potter and possibly Vanilla Sky...

Now getting back to the most over-rated movie of the year, I'd hafta say Memento (6/10). I thought the movie was good the first time (probably a 7/10), and then I watched it a second time to fully understand the movie and absorb everything else, and I just couldn't it was just too boring. So I gave it a 6/10 because it at least entertains the first time you watch it but doesn't hold up to repeated viewings. I think it's absurdly rated a 10/10 by a lot of people and it's currently #10 on the IMDb's top 250 (was #9 before LOTR). Though I haven't seen Lord of the Rings, I have a feeling that might be as well... currently being #1 one with a 9.5 average http://www.joblo.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Don't get me wrong, I like those two movies but they are just good movies not great. For pete's sake, for one of my local film critics this is the only movie he has given four stars to this year, what is with that? And I don't think Memento is overrated. I wouldn't give a 10/10 but I would give it a 9/10 because it is a superb movie. Very ingenously plotted, original (when was the last time you could call a movie that?) and is full of twists and surprises.

Without a doubt, hands down the winner is that overrated snooze fest, "Fellowship of the Ring." I was checking my watch every five minutes. My husband punched me in the arm telling me I was being obnoxious by yawning too much.

Traffic came out this year didn't it? Or was it late 2000? EIther way I think that was by far the most overrated movie of the past few years.

I think Shrek was way overrated. It was good for an animated film and that's it.

"Moulin Rouge" (C) was my pick for the most overrated film of the year, follow that by "Sexy Beast" (C+), "The Others" (C+), and "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (B-).

The Fellowship of the Rings (8/10), while good, is certainly overrated a bit.

The most overrated movie of the year would have to be Vanilla Sky (4/10). What a steaming pile of crap that movie was!

kici, you hated Lord of the Rings before it even came out, so that was no big surprise that you didnt like it. You should try and watcha movie for what it is, and not from what the "fans did to you" (i.e. the e-mails). Anyways, im gonna go with Memento. Ok, the first time, it was mildly intriguing, but the story playing backwards is the only reason it was so (mainly because I was trying to keep on top of things). The acting was good, but nothing great - I mean,...how hard is it to act confused?? The so-called, "twists and turns" werent really that amazing, and the 2nd viewing,...was really boring. On the whole, the entire movie wasnt really that entertaining, and that is my main reason to watch a movie - to be entertained. Something most of the movies listed here are. ....maybe thats why they were praised so much,......

The fact that I was willing to give FOTR a chance after that kid sent me e-mails cussing me out for not wanting to see it shows I was not prejudiced.

It was a snooze fest. I didn't connect with a single character. Compelling characters what makes a film great, not imagery. You have to feel something for the characters and Elijah was far too wooden as Frodo for me to care. I still think the level of hype is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. All it turned out to be was one chase scene after another, only with monsters instead of cars. Incredibly tedious and not deserving of the praise it got. It was great for the kids, but what were the grownups supposed to identify with?

Harry Potter

Sure, it wasn't that bad but critics and movie fans were going crazy about it. I give the film a 7/10...maybe a 6/10.

Spy Kids (4/10) isn't nearly as good as all the critics said. It's the most overrated movie of the year.

I've gotta say Shrek, I liked the movie, it was better than what I thought it would be, but it was still definitely over rated.

Although it was good, it definetly did not live up to the hype IMO, and is WAY overrated by alot of people.

Traffic opened wide I believe January 4th, 2001. So one could argue either way as to whether it's a 2000 or 2001 movie.

Man, and remember that I knew that release date from memory. I have a sad life http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

The Lord of the Rings it's an okay movie, though at least 40 mins overlong. But all this best movie ever. Not even close.

Am I the only one that thinks Memento is underrated? The Schmoes appreciate it and some critics do, but most awards people ignored it, as did some critics (Leonard Maltin, I'm looking in YOUR director) and a lot of people haven't heard even about it.

For the record, I really enjoyed Moulin Rouge and The Others too (haven't seen the other two yet), but I hardly think bskutle should be put down because he didn't.

Yeah, I did (and I REALLY feel like it was time wasted). http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif I also wasted my time watching "Mulholland Drive," "Memento" (four times), "Lord of the Rings" (three times), "A.I." (three times), and "Ocean's Eleven" (twice). Dammit!

If I might ask jdagnese, what did you find overrated?

Lord Of The Rings i am getting fed up about this being advertised, it's in the paper all the time and it's always on TV everyday.

Harry Potter has been advertised and all over the internet and in the papers everyday and they brought out loads of toys and crap like that.

kici you were being very obnoxious and rude by yawning during a masterpiece.

Anyways, Spy Kids was the most overrated film of 2001. What a piece of steaming shit that movie was.

And Memento IS overrated. Everybody on the Internet was raving over it, and declaring it a masterpiece. So I went out and rented the film. After it was over, I was like "that was it?". Don't get me wrong, its a good film, and it's original, but being original can only take you so far.

And A Beautiful Mind is the most overrated piece of drivel to ever be released in the movies. Anyone who says this deserved Best Picture more than LOTR has got to be fucking kidding themselves.

Harry Potter: I fell asleep. I can't believe I got dragged to this. Thank god, my girlfriend works at the theatre so we got in free.

A Beautiful Mind: Well it was a very good movie it was not great, in the epic sense everyone was making it out to be.

Moulin Rouge: Didn't even waste my time going to the theatre to see this one. Instead of walking out all I had to do was hit eject. Boring as hell. How the hell this crap got nominated for best picture blows my little mind.

ColinM: Without a doubt Memento is underrated. I don't understand why some people have claimed that it was boring after the first viewing? My vote for one of the most underrated movies of the year.
