View Full Version : Wouldn't it be MORE PC to leave the character white?

It seems like everytime a character is going to be changed into a black person, everyone says the filmmakers are trying to be PC. And I speak of comments I've heard regarding the new Honeymooners movie, the Bond rumor and many others.
Well, don't you kind of think that leaving the character white is more of a P.C. choice?
I mean, being P.C. is about changing things to keep from offending people, right?
So, wouldn't the producers actually be PC if they said, "Oh, we better not change Bond to a black guy. That would really bother the fans. Oh, I don't know about this black ralph Kramdon... That'll really bother some people."
See what I mean?
When you look at actuallity, there are more black actors today than in the days of H.Mooners, and when Bond was first created. To me, it's all just the way things work. If 20 actors try out, or express interest in Bond, surely a few will be black. If 20 writers offer scripts, surely a few will have a black slant to it. Isn't that just the way things work?
I'm not sure that Hollywood, and the Big Movie Machine really worry about making PC choices. Just think of the way so many different people are potrayed in so many different ways. What does everyone else think?

I don't think it's PC to make a character black, I think it's pandering bullshit.
James Bond is WHITE... plain and simple.
The Honeymooners were/are WHITE... plain and simple.
I've got a pitch for a movie about Rosa Parks, only she's half white and half Chinese. Do you think that would fly with the black community? Uhm... no. Yea, Bond and the Honeymooners are "fictional" character, but it's a principle.
Now, to have a non descript story, where it can be either way, then yea, there's nothing wrong with having one of them be black, but to change it, just cause there isn't a "black" character in the movie, is just pandering bullshit. Nobody would expect a movie written by a black guy, about black guys, set in an all black neighborhood, to have one of the characters be "changed" to a white guy. And I don't mean a "wigger", I mean, a straight up, run of the mill, white guy, who speaks proper English, and doesn't shoot people with his gun "cocked" to the side.
"Leaving a character white", isn't PC, it's... uhm... what was written. Going out of you way to change the whole persona of a character, whether it's only on page, or a classic well known one, from white, to black, is just pandering PC bullshit.
This Honeymoonesr bullshit is just... well... bullshit. Now, to take the IDEA of the Honeymooners, and "Hip" it up... fine, it's still a disgrace, but fine. But to actually call it "The Honemooners", and to use the names "Ralph Kramden" and "Ed Norton", is just bullshit, plain and simple.
Could you see "Sanford and Son", being remade into an all "white" cast go over well? Nope... but we's just be whitie, and we's can't complain about shit, or we's be considered racist and shit... aight?
Yea, I ranted, but it could've been a LOT worse.

Thanks, Darko - that's great! And hell, you got more to say, say it.
You precisely brought up the point I was hoping we could get to --
I don't think it's PC to make a character black, I think it's pandering bullshit
That, if anything is how I feel about these things: White Bond, White Honeymooners -- It's just a way to make them profitable, or to tap into a new demographic. That's why I left my initial post on the money-tip. ;)
I just wish more people could see it for what it is. PC has nothing to do with it - the whole thing isn't a race issue. I'm wondering if more people also see it as such, but like you and I, are less vocal about it. Well, at least me. :p
If you really want to fuck with people, make Bond a black woman.
I can hear the wailing now.
Personally, I have no problem with a black James Bond, or a female one for that matter.

That's actually not a bad idea, just as long as it isn't Halle Berry.
And I agree with Bubba. It's more of a marketing and demographic thing than it is political correctness.
