I still don't understand the inclusion of RAY for BEST PICTURE, it does not deserve to be in this category, not by a long shot. FINDING NEVERLAND I can understand, but I don't consider it to be Oscar material. The other three films are all excellent in their own right though, here's hoping that THE AVIATOR takes home the award, and I think it will win, but MILLION DOLLAR BABY is certainly sizing up the competition. I'll be happy either way, really, they're both two of the year's greatest films.

And knowing how much the Academy love Clint Eastwood and directors who also act in general, it's most likely that he'll take home his second award for Best Director, and Scorsese will get an honorary Oscar.....sometime in the future. I just hope that my prediction is wrong and Marty will finally get his due, his directing for THE AVIATOR was by far the best of the year.

The strongest category yet is in the BEST ACTOR category. With the exception of Johnny Depp, they are all respectively, neck and neck on my list of the greatest male performances of 2004, so I would be extremely glad to see any one of them win. If Jim Carrey or the often overlooked Paul Giamatti were here instead of Depp, then I would've been even happier.

Somehow, I think an upset will happen in the Best Actress section and Swank won't get another Oscar. Hilary Swank has won in this category before, and she's still young and has a large future ahead of her, I think the Academy will give someone else a chance.....most likely Imelda Staunton, there has been a lot of buzz about her, or the second round of Swank vs. Bening may result in the tables turning this time and Annette will take home the Oscar. I haven't seen Staunton and Bening's performances, so I can't judge whether they deserve to win or not, of the other nominees Swank definitely deserves it, the best female performance I've seen of 2004.

As for the Supporting Actor & Actress categories, I'll say that Morgan Freeman deserves his long overdue Oscar by far, the only one that even comes close in this category is Thomas Haden Church, but I don't see any possibility of any of the other actors winning. Jamie Foxx is likely to receive the award for Best Actor so he won't win here, newcomer Clive Owen still has a large future ahead of him and plenty of chance to win an award, and Alan Alda's role in The Aviator is way too short for him to actually win IMO. Haven't seen Linney and Portman's turns in the Supporting Actress category. Sophie Okonedo, although good, won't have a chance in hell, but both Cate Blanchett's flawless portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in THE AVIATOR (it was at first a dead on impersonation, but then I realized it was something much more than that) and Virginia Madsen's richly subtle performance in SIDEWAYS are incredibly deserving. I'd go with Blanchett, but only by a hair.

MY RANKINGS OF THE BEST PICTURE NOMINEES:
1. The Aviator
2. Million Dollar Baby
3. Sideways
4. Finding Neverland
5. Ray

I'm hoping for at least one upset in the acting categories tomorrow night. Just because I want a little unpredictability in the show. And it could very well come in the form of Annette Bening defeating Hilary Swank, and splitting their two Best Actress battles to one oscar apiece. I think Swank deserves the award, but deep down inside, I'd love to see Kate Winslet win. Winslet doesn't have a chance in Hell, though.

As for the other acting categories: I think Jamie Foxx is a lock for Best Actor. And Foxx deserves to win the award, in my opinion. He was absolutely stunning. It's amazing what Foxx has accomplished in just one year.

Morgan Freeman will win for Best Supporting Actor. As much as I loved Thomas Haden Church in Sideways, I want to see Freeman win his very first and long overdue oscar. Needless to say, Freeman's one of the greatest actors living today, and the fact that he doesn't have an oscar is a damn shame. He should have won years ago for The Shawshank Redemption.

And Cate Blanchett will barely edge out Virginia Madsen for Best Supporting Actress. In that particular category, however, I'm cheering on Madsen, but I'll be happy if Blanchett wins. Both performances were fantastic.

For Best Director, I'm predicting Clint Eastwood will pick up his second oscar for directing. And lastly, for Best Picture, I think it's going to be Million Dollar Baby. To be honest, I really hope Million Dollar Baby beats The Aviator. I thought The Aviator was good, and Scorsese's direction was breathtaking, but at the same time, it's far from being one of Scorsese's best, and I think it's slightly overrated. Million Dollar Baby, I think, is the superior film, and the film which remained in my memory.

Of course, I'm just offering my own two cents on which film I think is superior from the TWO FRONT RUNNERS for Best Picture. If you were to ask me to rank all the Best Picture nominees in order of personal preference, it would look something like this:

1. Sideways
2. Million Dollar Baby
3. Finding Neverland
4. Ray
5. The Aviator

I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow evening. The anticipation is killing me. :D

I say the same thing every year, and mostly I'm disappointed, but I hope to God there's an upset victory. All these talking heads picking the same names (Foxx, Swank, etc.) over and over gets tedious, so I want to see some upsets! You know, like somebody that isn't talked up much, Imelda Staunton...perhaps the media doesn't know who she is 'cause she isn't as glamorous or a big star, but she gave the most honest and layered performance of the year.

Oh, and my ranking of the Best Picture nominees, from best to worst:

1. MILLION DOLLAR BABY
2. RAY
3. SIDEWAYS
4. THE AVIATOR
5. FINDING NEVERLAND

In my opinion, the worst movie nominated for best picture is The Aviator. I can understand why it was nominated, but I didn't like it that much. Ray was a very good movie, but not a great one. Same goes to Finding Neverland. Million Dollar Baby was a great movie and I wouldn't mind seeing it win. But the one I want to win is Sideways, which is just slightly better than Million Dollar Baby.

For Actor, I want Don Cheadle to pull one out. He was just plain excellent in Hotel Rwanda and had one of the best performances of the 00's. Giamatti was robbed in favor of Depp, who was good, but not as good as Giamatti.

For Actress, I'd like to see Kate Winslet win it but that won't happen. It's pretty obvious like Foxx winning that Hilary Swank will win. She was great and all, I just wouldn't mind seeing an upset in this categorie. I haven't seen the other three performances which I'm ashamed of.

Supporting Actor will go to Freeman. Although the Globes shockingly went with Clive Owen, I think the Oscars will go the other way and pick the obvious one. Alan Alda doesn't deserve to be nominated really, and even Alec Baldwin was better than him. Jamie Foxx was the lead in Collateral and shouldn't be in the categorie.

Supporting Actress will go to Blanchett. I was suprised also when the Globes went with Portman, and as with Clive Owen, she won't win here. Sophie Okonedo and Virginia Madsen were both great and I wouldn't mind seeing either win.

The director category is a two-man race. It's either Scorcese or Eastwood, as it's obvious enough. Payne directed well and Hackford the same, but they didn't direct in the same way these two did. Both did great on their respective movies but I think and I want Eastwood to win.

Ranking the Best Picture Nominees:
1. Sideways
2. Million Dollar Baby
3. Ray
4. Finding Neverland
5. The Aviator

I can't wait for tonight. Alot of people love the Oscars for the fashion and the glamour, but I love them for two reasons. First is the simple fact that I love movies, and second I love the competition. Every year I look forward to them but usually in the end I am disapointed.

In the Supporting Actor category things have seemed to calm down in my opinion. What I mean is that 3 weeks ago I really thought Thomas Haden Church had a good shot to beat the sentimental pick of Freeman, now I don't think that will happen at all. Both performances are equally great but Freeman is one of the world's best actors and he deserves this. In the Supporting Actress race I have no idea what is going to happen. I don't consider anyone the front runner, and only a Laura Linney win would really surprise me. However Portman is lacking the SAG nomination which really hurts her chances, but the other 3 I can all see winning the Oscar. I think Madsen deserves it, so reluctantly I went with her.

The Best Actor race has been over for a long time now, but the Best Actress category is a very different story. I think that if Swank hadn't won in 1999 this would be over, but not only did she win, she beat Bening to do so. I just don't know if the voters are going to give her an incredible 2nd Best Actress Oscar in 5 years. Also Bening is very popular in Hollywood from what I've heard (royalty is a word that has been used) and she just might win a popularity contest for a performance that I heard wasn't even that good. Also I said on the day the nominations were announced Imelda Staunton would shock the world, well I have backed off from that statement a little bit but she could easily still do it. Swank's performance was one of the best I've ever seen by an actress, but even though she is considered the favorite I still have a sick feeling that her richly deserved 2nd Oscar is slipping away. But maybe I am wrong, I sure hope so because she deserves that fucking award.

And now my hero, the living legend himself is finally going to win the Oscar that he should have won for Raging Bull. Well it looked that way for a while, and then Eastwood came out of nowhere. As bad as I want Marty to win, Eastwood has made the better film. Atleast this time Scorsese won't be getting cheated if he loses, but make no mistake I will be pulling for Marty with every inch of my being.

In the end atleast we have some serious drama this year. Also it is nice to know that whatever wins the top prize tonight, if it's Million Dollar Baby, The Aviator or even if Sideways pulls off a major shocker, the night's big winner is going to be a great and worthy film.

As everyone else, I'm hoping for surprises, cause those are usually the best moments on an Oscar show, like when everyone in the audience was completely shocked when Adrien Brody won or when Roman Polanski took the award from Martin Scorsese.

I also want to see some great comedians cracking me up, obviously host Chris Rock, but also presenters with a witty line here and there. I just hope it will move at a more brisk pace what with the more youth-orientated show it promises to be, especially in the hiring of Rock.

Right now, it seems like, that Foxx, Swank, Blanchett, Freeman, Eastwood (director) and BABY (picture) are the ones to beat, so I'm praying for some upsets to enliven the show, the greatest probably would be to see Foxx lose, just for the sake of a racism controversy.

02-27-2005, 12:39 PM
Personally, I don't necessarily care about the winners actually being deserving, I just want to be entertained while watching the Oscars (unlike last year), so I'm looking for what Asokan is looking for: surprises and laughs.

Best Picture is between The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby, of course. My hope is that Sideways pulls through and upsets. It's my favorite of the bunch by far, and isn't all too likely to win. My favorite Oscar scenario, because now I can root for something I want to win, and not feel like I'm rooting for the Yankees to make the playoffs. If not Sideways, my second choice would be Ray. It would be completely shocking, and it's also my 2nd-favorite movie of the bunch, so it works out. But in terms of what I think will actually win, Million Dollar Baby.

Best Director is obviously between Eastwood and Scorsese. Between the two, both my hope and prediction is Eastwood. Sure, I'd love to see Marty finally get an Oscar, and even if I'm not crazy about this particular movie, I already said I don't care about the winners being deserving, so why the hell do I still want Eastwood to win? I don't know. Logically, Marty should be my preference, but I guess I just thought Million Dollar Baby was so superior to The Aviator that it cancels out my rule of not caring. But who I'd really like to see win is one of the other three. I haven't even seen Vera Drake yet, but I'd love nothing more than to see a win for Mike Leigh. Of course, there's absolutely no chance of that happening, but it'd be so shocking if it did.

Best Actor goes to Jamie Foxx, and there's no point in debating it. He's going to win. But not only am I rooting for Clint Eastwood to go against the favorite, I also think he gave a better performance.

Best Actress isn't quite decided yet. Sure, Hilary Swank won the Globe and SAG awards and is in the movie that will probably win Best Picture, but do they really want to give her 2 Oscars for what, let's face it, are really the only two noteworthy performances of her career? The surprising nominations of Vera Drake for Best Director and Original Screenplay show that the Academy loved it, so Imelda Staunton could potentially pull an upset here, and I wouldn't rule out Annette Bening either, perhaps as compensation for her losing to Swank in 1999. I still think Hilary Swank will win, I just don't think it's etched in stone. I hope either Imelda Staunton or Kate Winslet pulls an upset.

Most people are predicting Morgan Freeman for Best Supporting Actor, but my gut feeling just tells me he won't win. Clive Owen could win since he won the Globe, but I don't think it'll be him either. Thomas Haden Church will be the one. Just call it a hunch. He's also my pick as well, and I feel comfortable saying that I want him to win too, because although I'm predicting him to win, I'm going against the favorite my doing so, so it still counts.

Best Supporting Actress is almost a completely open category. Yea, Cate Blanchett looks like the heavy favorite on paper, but I could honestly see any of these women with the exception of Laura Linney taking home the Oscar tonight. Virginia Madsen could win since a lot of people think she was the best part about Sideways. Natalie Portman won the Globe, so it's only common sense that she's a strong contender for the Oscar as well. And Sophie Okonedo may be Hotel Rwanda's best chance for a win, and Academy voters may take advantage of that. Cate Blanchett is still my prediction since I know they are not going to let The Aviator leave without at least one of the major awards, and I'm not predicting it to win any of the other ones. I've actually only seen two of the nominated performances (Blanchett and Madsen), and of the two, I think Cate was slightly better, but I'd prefer to see Madsen win. And if not her, then Sophie Okonedo.

Best Original Screenplay is a pretty close race. Charlie Kaufman is the favorite since a lot of people think he should have won twice before, and more importantly, because he deserves to win this year too. But should the Academy members want to be dicks and let The Aviator take home all the awards, it could certainly pick this one up as part of its sweep. A lot of people are calling The Incredibles the best Pixar movie yet, and since they broke with Disney, they might see this as the last chance to give the team a big prize. Vera Drake clearly has support, and it could win here as a compensation prize if they don't give Best Actress to Imelda Staunton. Hotel Rwanda could also win as a compensation prize, and based on my gut feeling, I'm going to say that it is the most likely to upset Eternal Sunshine. But still, I am hopping on the bandwagon and saying that it's Charlie Kaufman's year. And deservedly so.

Best Adapted Screenplay will probably go to Sideways, but Million Dollar Baby could easily win as well if it wins Best Picture (which I think it will). However, I'm sticking with Sideways as my prediction. It's just too good a screenplay to not give an award to, and I think the Academy will agree. None of the other three nominees stand a chance.

As for the tech categories, The Aviator will sweep. Simple as that. I'm not sure if it deserves to, but it will.

And here's to hoping that Chris Rock gives the show some needed edge.

I still think there is a major toss-up between Million Dollar Baby and The Aviator. For every poll I've participated in (3; JoBlo, school, Premiere), I've picked Baby for Picture, and Scorsese for director. I don't even think it'll go that way anymore. I think Eastwood just may pull off another victory here, with maybe The Aviator taking home Best Picture. However, I always feel obliged to give Scorsese my vote, even with doubt in my mind. I've got Freeman, Foxx, Swank, and Madsen winning their respective categories, and Sideways and Eternal Sunshine... for their Screenplay categories.

Quick question: I'm not in the US right now and am unable to watch the show on television, so does anybody know a site where I can watch it online? I know that Oscar.com will have the Red Carpet entry, but I'm not sure if they'll stream the whole show.

Thanks in advance.

I don't want to be surprised at this year's Oscars, which is how I feel during many years. The people I want to win are Scorsese, Foxx, Swank, Freeman, and Blanchett. I'm usually a strong supporter of Oscar buzz, for it is oftentimes who I personally like to see win.

Here are what I think will be the multiple award-winners:

Aviator-5 wins (Picture, Supporting Actress, Sound, Editing, Cinematography)
MDB-3 wins (Director, Actress, Supporting Actor)
Lemony Snicket-3 wins (Art Direction, Costume Design, Makeup)
Incredibles-2 wins (Animated Film, Sound Editing)

No real sweeps, because it's a rather split year.

Anyway, Million Dollar Baby should take home Best Picture, Marty should finally recieve Best Director, Hilary Swank CAN NOT lose Best Actress, and I hope Natalie Portman wins Best Supporting Actress so we can all see her smile larger than life.

I don't believe that Ray should be nominated for Best Picture, but I think Jamie Foxx should be nominated, if not win the Oscar for his role as Ray Charles.
The Aviator is no doubt going to win best picture, and I really think Scorses deserves to win best director for The Aviator.
I'd want to see Morgan Freeman win best supporting actor (Totally robbed for Shawshank), but I have a feeling Clive Owen's gonna take it.

I've got a quick question.

Unfortunately I can't watch the ceremony tonight and in my desperation I'll probably tape the show, stay as far away from any news coverage tomorrow morning and watch it tomorrow afternoon.
I don't know how long the ceremony is however and I've only got 4 hours of tape. I read it's a five hour show (plus running late time), but does that include the red carpet coverage ?

Could anyone tell me how long the actual ceremony is supposed to run, so that my tape doesn't stop just before the winner for best movie is announced...

Best Director: Clint Eastwood
Best Actor: Clint Eastwood or Foxx, either way I'll be happy
Best Actress: Hilary Swank
Best Supporting Actress: Virginia Madsen
Best Supporting Actor: Thomas Haden Church or Morgan Freeman, either way I'll be happy
Best Origional Screenplay: ESOTSM, c'mon, it has to win....right?

The timing of it in the UK is 12:50 - 5:30

Not including the red carpet so it'll probably be on 4 1/2 hours.

The only awards i'm really routing for a winner are Owen & Portman for supporting and Kaufman for screenplay.

The others i'm just favouring the Aviator but wouldn't be to disappointed if Baby won.

I thought she was unimpressive as well...if she wins, it will be more for the fact that she has survived in H-wood after 20 years of B-pictures, so she might get rewarded for that aspect.

That particular scene was the most unsubtle of the movie: we get it, people are wine, they age, we get it! Nobody likes speeches that club you over the head. Plus, it was awkardly read by her, but oh well. C'est la vie.

God, I hate the red carpet. I muted the TV, and it was much more enjoyable. It's just way to sweet and happy for my tastes. Those interviewers are trying way too hard to be upbeat. Especially that young guy. Ok, well, the real show's about to begin...

Did anyone else laugh at the TERMINATOR music playing right after that guy's sad speech about his mom in the hospital? I thought it was unintentionally hilarious.

Best Doc. Short is up, and the winner is...
fuck, someone I didn't pick.

That would have been great if someone would have punched the fuck out of that guy that raised his hands as he won on stage. That would have showed him for rubbing it in all their faces. BURN!!!

And if he's been practicing all his life for that speech, he sure sucks at it.

A tip of the hat to Brando, that's for damn sure.

(I thought they mentioned Hunter for a sec, but it was some other Writer. I got all excited... RIP Hunter)

Puff Daddy obviously need to go back to get his GED. He was struggling with that prompter.

Who's this guy singing with Beyonce? Seems sort of Bargain basement to me.
