View Full Version : Most OVER-rated Film Ever

Taking a cue from Kraxpelax, I figured I'd make a most over-rated film ever thread... And the first flick/s that come to my mind are the following:

The LOTR Flicks - All HUGE pieces of cinematic shite in my mind... Constantly robbing much more deserving movies of Academy Awards and what not, only because it's got good cinematography and based off of a beloved novel series... Fuck them!

Titanic - Won critical acclaim, and the box office numbers were fucking HUGE, this movie romanticized what was one of the worst fuckin disasters and tragedies in history....

The Godfather - While a good movie, it's by NO means "great" in my mind... Getta buncha Italians crammed into one flick and have them act as pasta-eating gangsters for 3 hours, and then *SPOILER* have the head bossman (see: "Godfather") die at the end? Eh... I've seen better...

Magnolia - Fucking garbage, this movie goes right down the toilet, thanks to it's nonsensical "symbolic" disgusting ending... All credibility that flick built up over 2 hours and 45 minutes was out the fucking window, in the last 10-15 mins... Bollocks to this piece of shite!

Anyway off the top of my head, those are the ones I think are the most over-rated.... Donnie Darko, and any of David Lynch's films get the honorable mentions....

Fargo- it seemed like the type of film I would adore but... I don't know, it just didn't work for me. Frances McDormand was good though and she thoroughly deserved her oscar.

And also...

the Shrek movies
Philadelphia
Gladiator
The Godfather

I do however agree that Fight Club is overrated.

Overrated films:
Fight Club, Donnie Darko, Scarface (enjoyable, but overrated nonetheless), CLERKS and pretty much any Kevin Smith film, LOTR series (still enjoyable, but highly overrated), Chicago, Cabaret, The Crow, The Usual Suspects, Moulin Rouge, Forrest Gump, Titanic, Braveheart, The 6th Sense

BRAVEHEART
THE ENGLISH PATIENT
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS
TOM JONES
THE BLUE ANGEL
STAR WARS

Hold the fucking phone and listen.

The Lord Of The Rings. Plain and god damn simple. Why are these movies being looked at as the standard for modern cinema? And not only that, passing the Shawshank Redemption on the IMDB Top 250! They aren't real movies, it's all snazzy digital effects and fucking trees walking around. Is this what the Academy decided to award Best Picture? Hahaha, okay let me throw a 100 million dollar budget out on something and then just throw a bunch of cute little fantasy elements like little hobbits and wizards! Everybody will love this! Fuck these three movies, I will hate thse until the day I die. The Two Towers put me to fucking sleep in theaters and it gives me a god damn splitting head ache anytime someone talks about how good these movies are. Overly long, unintersting, all special effects pieces of shit.

This Lord Of The Rings shit needs to stop now. I say we just forget the three movies were ever made, I think the world of movies would be better off that way. Instead were all drooling over some stupid fucking ring these 2 characters trolly around with. FUCK THE STUPID RING, TELL SOMEONE ELSE TO TAKE IT!

Oh, uh, yeah I hate Lord Of The Rings kinda :-/.

I will agree that The Lord of the Rings were a little overrated, but I think you're all being a bit too hard on them.

The reason they are so well-respected is that Peter Jackson did what many thought was impossible. He took one of the most-loved works of fiction, one that people have an almost obsessive affection for, and long thought unfilmable and made it into three films. Not only did he make these films appealing to those who never read the books, but he made the drooling fanboy community happy as well. Very hard to do. I thought the movies were beautiful, decently cast, and adequately acted. Nothing special, but doesn't deserve all the scorn that many heap upon them.

My choice for most-overrated has to go to The Crow. Many people have elevated Brandon Lee to deity status after this, forgetting that he was, at best, a bad B-movie actor who just happened to die while making a two hour long music video.

Citizen Kane... simply THE most OVER-RATED movie... EVER!!!

And yea, I'll echo the LOTR... any of'm... as being VERY overrated.

Some others...

Dr Strangelove - Boring, boring... BORING!! Kubricks worst movie ever... and yea, I'm including Eyes Wide Shut.
Casablanca - Horrible acting... sorry (actually, I'm not, but I'm being polite), but Bogey can't, and could NOT act.
Gone With The Wind - Again, like just about every film of the era, the acting is horrible. I actually really like the script/story, but it's pulled down... WAY down, by the acting.

I'll settle for Citizen Cane even though it's a fine film I agree that it is a tad overrated in my book(greatest film of all time?), but I have to strongly dissagree with Dr. Strangelove, which is my favorite Kubrick film. I won't go any further on that one.

Rings trilogy are overrated.
Sideways was overrated. Good, but saw much better this year.

Shit, I'm tired and can't even think. Fuck overrated!

By the way, who's rating Panic Room, The Harry Potters, or Master and Commander anyways? Master and Commander got oscar noms but I don't remember anyone going nuts about it at all.

TOOTSIE- when you think about it, of all the transvestite comedies, this one is by far the most uninteresting, piece of garbage out of all of them. I was so ashamed of Dustin Hoffman, I can't believe the Academy fucking loved it.
BRINGING UP BABY
NAPOLEON DYNAMITE
DONNIE DARKO
REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
THE ENGLISH PATIENT- Fargo was SOOOOO much better and more original.

LOTR trilogy - yes, I like them, but seriously very overrated...
Psycho - truly overrated "classic".
The Ring - This piece of shit... enough said.
Halloween - great horror flick, but IMO pretty overrated.
Steven Spielberg movies - This man is truly overrated!
Titanic - my fellow schmoes has said it all...

The Lord of the Rings is the pinnacle of overrated films. I can hardly call them "films", but rather a video game that you can't play, but watch for 3 hours. Sure, it is a milestone in film history, but it's a negative one. Due to the success of these films, directors with high-budgets are going to invest in these CGI-shitfests.

There is so much CGI bullshit that Peter Jackson should have won Game of the Year instead of a fucking Oscar. Try making a real film, Peter, and quit relying on computers to craft one for you.

If these films were without blatantly taking advantage of the recent breakthroughs in technology, I may have a little more respect to offer, but as it stands, I've had enough of retards blabbing about these flaming shitfests.

Movies that I like, but not nearly as much as most other people seem to:

The Piano
Dances with Wolves
Say Anything
The Age of Innocence
Easy Rider
A Streetcar Named Desire
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
The Night of the Hunter
Blade Runner

And well-loved movies that I don't like:
Doctor Zhivago
Night of the Living Dead
Donnie Darko
Braveheart

I absolutely love the LOTR trilogy.

I don't get the whole 'overrated' bullshit. Isn't it a matter of opinion?? Someone hears a bunch of hype because a bunch of people love a certain movie; they see it; they hate it; so they whine that it's 'overrated'. Wah. This topic is overrated.

I agree. It's like I see a new one of these spring up every week or two. It is a "Best/Worst/Favorites" topic and I've had my fair share of posts here, but I see the same handful of films in every one of these threads getting beaten to a pulp. I kinda agree with this one. Even though I enjoyed the movie a lot, its reputation is a bit much. It's not the be all end all of comedy. There's much better screwball out there, people!

And on that note, It's a Wonderful Life - a fine movie, but don't get the 'magic'. Capra's rarely been less interesting (actually, only Lost Horizon comes to mind).

Ben-Hur - want the best Roman epics? Watch Spartacus or Quo Vadis. Want the best Wyler? Watch anything but Ben-Hur.

True, which is why I've decided to rant about a few I hate, too. Why be a spoil-sport, right?? :D

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT – Dreadful film. Poorly constructed and badly acted.

MYSTIC RIVER – I’m just dumbfounded that this film was nominated for (let alone won) any Oscars. It was horrible.

HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG - Awful doesn't even begin to describe how bad this piece of shit really is. The plot was predicatable. The ending was melodramatic and pitiful. And this got rave reviews??

MAGNOLIA - Yep...I agree with everyone else who hated this thing. Sorry, but it was moronic.

ET – To quote Garth Algar: “…sucked!” I hate this film to this day. I had never seen a merchandising blitz like this one before the 80’s. And I went with my family to see it…and it was rancid. The acting was cheesy. The ending was corny. The writing was mediocre. I just hate it.

THE HOURS - Ugh. What a piece of shit. Nicole Kidman might be the most overrated actress of our time. The whole film just depressed me.

EYES WIDE SHUT - If Stanley Kubrick is one of the most brilliant directors of our time, this film offers no proof.

SPIDERMAN - Critics universally loved it. Audiences saw it in droves. And it was just pathetic. Kirsten Dunst and Willem Dafoe were both appalling in their respective roles. Not even Toby MacGuire made this film tolerable. I can't sit through the entire film again. It's just that bad.

NATURAL BORN KILLERS - Oliver Stone made his first mistake with this film. Again, critics loved it, audiences saw it in droves, and I hated it.

REQUIEM FOR A DREAM - Drugs are bad...mmmm'kay? So is this film. Not even a double-dildo penetration featuring Jennifer Connelly could save it.

Really intelligent post here.... (Sarcasm incase you can't tell.) So because he used CGI the whole movie is shit? Because he used modern technology he is shit? I hate to break it to you, buddy, but no one wants to make a movie using technology from 50 years ago. They're going to use the new stuff, everyone would. Watch the damn movies, is there a computer controlling the camera? Is there a computer telling the actors how to act? Is there a computer writing the movie? Is there a computer picking locations, building sets, teling the crew what to do?
