View Full Version : Can't anyone stay sober anymore?
First off, if he has some medical reason for this, let me know and I will apologize for my lack of knowledge.
This struck me as strange, and it seems that no one is talking about it, but didn't Dustin Hoffman appear to be a tad bit tipsy?
He couldn't get he cue right, he seemed to have trouble speaking and slurring his words, and he stumbled through the nominations for Best Picture. Babs looked like she was hitting grandpa's cough medicine a bit her self too.
My main rant is how people seem unable to control their alcohol intake before they are to be in front of millions of people.
If your giving out an award for a prestigious event, don't you think you could put down that 5th chardonnay and perhaps not hit your bong before the show?
He seemed more nervous than drunk. Many actors have trouble dealing with crowds in spite of being in front of a camera most of their lives. Hoffman may be one of those...but then again he could have been smashed out of his gourd, too.

No...he was drunk. Notice he was the only one giving a standing ovation to one of the technical award winners?

Wasnt Kirsten Dunst drunk at an award ceremony too one time, after gettin some award for one of the Spider-man flicks? She came off a stupid drunk slut, and I lost any respect I had for her, as I don't think she's worth a shite as an actress anyhow....

Not me..
I yearn to turn the clock back and give the dummy a second chance to see that turning up at the pubs all drunk is what will/and did cause his untimely death. I have no interest in seeing the greats whether alive or dead relive their demons. They cheat themselves as well as their fans.
I'm sober right now. Oh, baby....

Ollie was an old school hellraiser but his hardcore lifestyle never interfered with his ability as a thesp' and a charismatic (albeit sometimes scenery chewing) performer. Glenda Jackson once described him as a "consummate professional". He didn't cheat ANYBODY, he lived and died his own man...and he enlightened the lives of many along the way.
He also came this close to fullfilling his every last ambition in life...to drink every pub dry, and sleep with every woman on earth.
He died downing rum and arm-wrestling Sailors for crying out loud! Fuck OUR selfish expectations, do you think HE would've wanted it any other way?
To label him a mere 'dummy' or 'drunk' is to do him a grave disservice, there was a great deal of substance and talent beneath the stuff of legends.

As long as they can stay sober enough to keeping churning out decent movies I could give a rat's ass.
So in Hoffman's and Bab's case I was pretty upset.

Yes, Dustin Hoffman was very, very drunk as he presented at the Oscars, I was very embarrassed for him and could tell Barb was trying to cover up for him as much as she could.

i remember that... but i dont think it was because he was drunk.
The award was won by the Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events Make-Up Dept (i believe it was make up, i know it was Lemony Snicket that won the award)... and Dustin Hoffman is in A Series of Unfortunate Events... so i dont think he was drunk when he stoop up and clapped for them, as much as he was happy that people he had worked with on that flick won an Oscar!

Oohhh.."tawdry" comebacks....
but the truth of the matter is, I have read enough of your posts to get a pretty good idea what your "ideals" are..and that for the most part, you seem to be quite serious about them as well...so yeah...I kinda DO have ya pegged..but I aint judging you...I'm just disagreeing with what you think is a great way to cash in the ol "fish-n-chips".....ie....being drunk and arm wrestling sailers....
oh, and by the by "luv"....his lifestyle DID affect his career....if I recall...he dropped dead "doing it his way" before all his scenes were finished filming for Gladiator, causing Ridely Scott to have to use digital manipulation on at least one of Reeds last scenes, and to also have to use a body double for a camera shot at the end filming a back shot of Reed.... look it up and then you can lemme know how you stand corrected. ;)
...but I wont hold my breath awaiting a sensible reply...cheerio! ;)

I'm really not here to participate in some crude secondary school psycho-analysis. This is a message board ferchrisake...and you only know what the wafer-thin persona I inhabit around here allows you to know about me. So step away from the keyboard Freud, because you're beginning to sound very foolish indeed.
I'm intruiged as to what you perceive my "ideals" to be, only because the mere notion that you'd even be within sniffing distance is absolutely fucking absurd!

I agree with you but at the same time you could note that he didn't get the part of quint in jaws (which he'd have been perfect for) ultmately because of the drink. Which is a shame.
Edit: Although as I said I agree with you. I woulda liked to be a fly on the wall for the conversation where spielberg offered him the role but read basically didn't wanna film 2000 miles away from his local. Classic.

For someone who is not taken with BCV 'ideals' you sure do spend alot of time following her post's around by the look of it.
I know someone who has 'dropped dead' at the age of 19 and he never touched a drop of alcahol. So lets not trivilise his death as a show of unprofessionalism because he couldn't make his last few scenes.
What BCV is saying is that the man lived his life whatever way he wanted. He was an honest straight down the middle kinda guy who wasn't out to kiss ass and live up to peoples 'ideals', but yet no-one has a bad word to say about him and his body of work is supurb.
One last thing. You wasn't holding you breath waiting for a sensible reply. Man it looks to me like you hold your breath until BCV posts quite alot.
But hey whatever floats your boat.

btw...BCV...I noticed you seemed to pick apart what I wrote..but CONVIENIENTLY left out the FACT I brought up about Gladiator and Reeds lifestyle impacting the shoot to a certain degree....of which you originally tried stating his lifestyle DIDNT impact his career....
but thats okay.... :p

I'm sure I'm not the only person wodering this, but... What's the frickin' deal here? You seem to be going after BCV pretty doggedly, and I can't seem to figure out why. Even if there was a reason, this should be done over pm's, if at all.
No need to ruin a good discussion with something as petty as this. This is a movie message board, not a biker bar.

I didn't 'pick' anything apart. The conversation morphed into an attack on MY "ideals", so I responded to that. I really didn't care for the personal jibe so I gave it far too much salt, you're correct about me ignoring the latter part of your post but it certainly wasn't intentional.
Reed dropped dead LIVING his life HIS way...we all pop our clogs some day man. He's not the first person to do so mid-project and he certainly won't be the last., self-inflicted or otherwise. It's not so much a case of his lifestyle impacting his career as his lifestyle impacting his life...and at the end of the day he chose to drink himself into an early grave and I at least admire him for doing it his way and being a utterly likeable, intelligent, gifted human-being all the while. He was a one-off IMO, with or without the booze in his belly he was a real fucking powerball of a man and an actor...I respect him for being a hellraiser, a non-conformist and a damn fine performer...I respect him warts and all, simple really.
What that has to do with MY personal morals and ideals I'll never know...because preposterous as it sounds, I sure as shite aint drinking my local tavern dry every night!

Yeh, you keep telling yourself that girl, but we know better. ;) :D
I personally dont see what it has to do with any of us the amount of alcohol intake any other person has unless it is harming us. If ole Dustin was off his face then so be it. He is afterall human, in control of his own life and has every right to drink to his hearts content. An awards cermony is afterall meant to be a social event and what do people do when they socialise, they get rat arsed make a complete twat of themselves and wake up with the worst hangover ever and say NEVER AGAIN. Then the next week comes, and we start all over again.
Just because they are in the public eye doesn't make them our property to say what they should or shouldn't do, we all have our opinions and these boards are all about expressing them in a healthy fashion. I just think we are all human, 99% of us like a drink, and most of the time probably too much, thats life, and for me there is too much other shit going on in the world to worry what other people think of you cause your rat arsed, I know I don't.
I say CHEERS..........

I just felt I had to say, way too personal here Joshmo, you can never know someone buy scrutinising their posts, which is also very unhealthy if you ask me. IMO BCV has a decent reputation on these boards and although passionate about her beliefs, she always does her best not to offend anyone. Her humour always shines through. If you've read her past posts as you say, you will know this. :)

That Daredevil stole the 'kiss in the rain' from Spiderman. At least, thats what I remember.
It actually pissed me off at the time, but then I realized how bad Daredevil sucked, and how much Spiderman kicked ass.

Yeah, I don't see how that is supposed to make me lose respect for Dunst. If anything, I think it kicks ass that she called the filmmakers on that shit. Everyone makes her out to be this dumb shit, but personally, I think she's a tad above the MTV awards, and is due to treat tthem as a joke.

Drunk stars at award shows are the only good things about them. I watched the British comedy awards which only sparked into life when Johnny Vegas came on hammered and started insulting Jonathan Ross.
