Hey I've been looking around EBAY and I am region 1 and I'm wondering a few things:

1) Should I shell out 5 bucks for the version I'm seeing or is it bootlegged crap?
2) DVD Aficinado has 2 disc DVD of it out for region 1 but when I look on Ebay they list it as Region 2.
3) Which auction is my best bet?

Quick link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=80025&item=6373628562&rd=1

Thank you for any help you can give.

Currently, I have not found any region 1 versions of this DVD.

Only way to go is hacking your player or getting an all-region one.

Then how have so many people seen it if there's no Region 1?

Um, Old Boy hasn't even come out in theaters in the US yet. Maybe that's why you can't find regoin 1 DVD info.

...........

Are you kidding me?

These people have one of the following

1. an all region DVD player
2. able to go to a film festival playing the movie
3. a hacked DVD player
4. a computer to download it
5. live in a European country or a country on another continent that already has it released
6. Got a DVD copy from somebody that was burned as a region 1 DVD
7. Traded/Bought off the internet from somebody who had a VCD or DVD-R that was burned to region 1
8. A shitload of more choices

Your belief that so many people saw the movie because there must be a region 1 dvd is quite.......odd.

The bootleg one can be a bit tricky. It has the movie but the subtitles are for a different movie. The r3 version which I have has great subtitles. You may want to consider getting that.

Don't treat me like a retard. I know about all the things you just said. Don't treat me like a retard.

I asked this because DVD AF has a Region 1 DVD and I'm wondering why some people seem to have it and in some places it seems like it doesn't even exist.

Well, I bought this copy a while ago from Hong Kong (from an online retailer that specialized in asian DVDs):

http://www.dvdaf-pics.com/thumbs/71/57671.gif

I picked it because it was cheap, and althought it was essentialy bare bones I didn't make a difference as the other versions' extras on the big cases they wer coming in were only available in a language I didn't speak or understand. However I own a region free DVD player which is the only way I was able to play it. I think their might be region 0 dvd out there but I don't know of. You might as well get a region free DVD player since you'll have a whole new world opened up for you (I heard the're cheap).

Or you can get that one. It's cheaper, but it is uncut.

First off, I wasn't treating you like a retard. I was just stating facts.

To my knowledge, there was not a region 1 DVD available unless it's a DVDR or VCD. Didn't see any Region 0 copies also.

Your final sentence, is that about DVD/film releasing or people knowing of it in general? There's the whole distribution thing for film/DVD and other people might have bought it from a country where it is released.

Strangely enough I walked into a walmart in the UK on tuesday and there was oldboy, sitting next to alien vs predator on the dvd shelves.

(NB: I realize this is sweet fuck all help for getting a copy in the states but I was still pretty shocked flipping walmart were stocking it)

Wow, its awesome that they'd even sell Oldboy at Walmart...I'm not sure if they'll sell it at Walmarts stateside. BTW, I didn't know they had Walmart in the UK lol.

Anyway, if you really want to see the movie that bad and can't wait for the theatrical release or an official Region 1 DVD, then go for the bootleg. Or if you have something to trade, I can burn you a copy on dvd-r.

The best release to date of Oldboy came out Feb. 28 on a region 2 DVD. Unfortunately you have to unlock your region 1 player to be able to watch it which is usually quote a simple thing to do. It is an official release from Tartan Asia Extreme...one of the best DVD release companies for Asian DVDs. Anything you see on eBay for $4.95 is most likely a bootleg. Nobody sells DVDs that cheap. You can find it at amazon.co.uk. Here is the picture of the DVD cover..... I actually think this is the same release your link to the auction went to. It retails for 14.99 GBP which is around 27 american dollars.
