According to Variety, Nicholas Cage's next film will be director Neil LaBute's long-gestating project The Wicker Man, a remake of the 1973 thriller.

LaBute will direct from his own adapted screenplay.

The story follows a sheriff investigating the disappearance of a young girl on a remote island off the coast of Maine. His hopes of unraveling the girl's disappearance become increasingly uncertain when he discovers evidence of pagan rituals.

Cage will be seen up next in The Weather Man and is currently in production in Austrailia on the comic book adaptation, Ghost Rider.

I hope Nicolas Cage does the role of the investigator...Id love to see him burn alive! I wonder if todays PC world will allow such an ending on a film or if theyll have Nicolas Cage get into his action star mode and kick the pagan worshipers asses?

Or will he play Lord Summerisle? I wonder who their going to cast as LOrd Summerisle...would Chrisopher Lee make an appearance?

I love the original, I think its a truly weird, unnerving, strange and surreal film. I wonder if this one would be a pseudo musical as well?

What do you guys think?

The soundtrack in the 73 version ruined the movie for me. I couldnt stand it. So hopefully they update it. IMDB has Christopher Lee in the cast index for the remake.

Can't wait. I love cage, and I wasn't too fond of the original. I didn't even bother to finish it, though I got to the wicker man at the end, which obviously meant I was just really not in the movie, as that's, what, the best part?
The better news is this obviously isn't going to go the teeny bopper route, like a lot of you thought the TCM remake would (or did). I mean it has Cage. It'll probably be R. I guess the director is respected too.
Thumbs up from this end.

Do they know what they're touching here?

Can't touch this.

Sick.

NO need to touch this one..the original is near perfect...one feels like they are witnessing a documentary of real pagans.... this is gonna suck BIG TIME.

If Neil LaBute weren't such a fucking genius, I'd be soooooo pissed right now...

I'm pissed about the remake, but LaBute and Cage are talented guys, so it should at least be a good watch. They had better not pussy out on the ending, though...

So this film is actually going ahead. I'd assumed (hoped) it had died a quiet death. Oh well. Is Christopher Lee definitely attached to this then? If so, he's changed his tune given that in the audio commentary for the original he was laughing about the fact that the makers of the remake thought they could get him to star in it.

Hey, man, Lee's gotta score some cash for his retirement fund. Anyway, he was talking about wanting to work with talented directors before he quits, and LaBute definitely falls into that category.

Perhaps they'll use Iron Maiden's 'The Wicker Man' in the soundtrack. I'm sure Arrow would love that, though it'd be a little cliche/cheesy for that song to be there, in my opinion.

Eh, why not. Remake is a remake, it's not the original, it doesn't taint it. However, I doubt it will have the musical number, not cool anymore I suppose. I don't like Cage, I've never heard of LaBute, so... whatever I guess.

Sorry, but this movie is sacred and holy. Cage should be burnt in a Wicker Man as a sacrifice to the gods - but not in a remake. In real life.

Now, I kept hearing about a pseudo-sequel to the Wicker Man called "The Riding of the Laddie" - sounds like a porno - with Chris Lee and Ewan McGregor. Any new news on that?

I am a big fan of the original, and i think it's a classic. I would be terribly upset about this remake, but alas, the news of Neil LaBute's involvement quenches my anxiousness rather nicely. i definitely have faith in the genius that is Neil LaBute!

I love the original , it's one of my favourite movies EVER . I've visited the locations , chatted to Christopher Lee about it and even participated in a ritual " reanacment " at the very same clifftop featuring burning Wickermen and loads of beer ( great party )
Having said all that , I don't mind the remake . It can't harm the original and , in fact , it might urge people who've never seen it to seek it out . Riding Of The Laddie had its name changed to May Day and will probably never see the light of day due to narrow minded producers .

I had been looking forward to seeing The Wicker Man for a long time. I got the DVD for Christmas but it wouldn't work for some reason so I haven't seen it yet. As far as remakes go, they are all bad. Nic Cage makes it much worse. He is one of those actors that are supposed to be great but I just don't like him (no idea why).I'll just keep an eye out for the original.

Man, I'm jealous! How can I get in on this party??? Did you all sing "Summer is a-coming in"?

Am I the only one who heard this movie was awesome, then watched it, and thought--God this is horrible! ????

I hated it. Another one was Last House on the Left! I didn't get the music in that one. I mean I get it, but I suppose the problem lies in expectations. I'd heard so much about those two films and they were very different. I don't know, just wondering.

It looks like turning into an annual event . There have been two so far and I'm pretty sure the organisers have another scheduled for this summer .
Yes we did sing summer is a coming and many more . It gets pretty freaky but I love it . The film gets a midnight showing and there's a firelite procession through the village before the Wickermen are set alight .
If you get the chance , go !

Did I read the article right? After Cage plays in The Wicker Man he's going to play in The Weather Man? http://www.allemoticons.com/Crazy/Crazy_484.gif

LOL!! Oh My God, I thought you were joking, so I looked it up.
This isn't new, but talks about both films.

Anyway, I thought the original Wickerman was great.

I feel the same way. If the craptastic The Haunting wouldn't have come out-some people may have not known about the incredible original.

I just this minute finished watching him drink himself to death with Elizabeth Shue in Leaving Las Vegas, so I can't agree with you on that one. But it did cross my mind when I was watching this movie-why is he doing things like National Treasure now, instead of stuff like this? Truckloads of money driven up to his door I guess.

ERIN-LoJ, your avatar is really creepy. It's great. I'd like to know who or what it is.
