This sequel to Get Shorty is out today.
I LOVE Get Shorty so they better not mess up with this movie! Chilli Palmer is also my fav Travolta role/performance as well!

I have no desire to pay to see this. First of all, it's PG-13 and obviously sanitized to appeal to a broader audience than the first one. Second, Scott Frank is not involved. I don't think I've ever heard of the screenwriter. Third, I am not a fan of F. Gary Gray at all. I know most people enjoyed it, but I absolutely despised The Italian Job remake. This looks like it's trying way too hard. The trailer and TV clips don't do much for me. Screams rental, if anything. I do like Get Shorty a lot, though. I'd rather watch that again than sit through this.

Saw it tonight. I love Get Shorty, one of my favorite movies, and this... this just is not get shorty. 15 minutes into it you can push Get Shorty out of your mind and watch this, a very funny entertaining flick. There is like 8 songs (bleh) but THE ROCK and VINCE VAUGHN steal the frikin show. The Bring It On monologue was the funniest thing all year, I enjoyed it, very funny fun film, but don';t compare this to get shorty, because they can't compare.

Holy shit this was quite the pile of dung.
I'd rather get an enema with shards of glass and razorblades mixed with lemon juice and Tabasco than see this again.

If this movie was a cake, then they put paint on top of it rather than icing because it looked prettier.

The Rock, Vince Vaughn, and Andre 3000 were all funny. The rest of the movie is crap.

Alright, I did not see the original from start-to-finish, I saw bits of that movie - but today, I went out and saw the sequel..and even not having seen the original I enjoyed this very well. Vince Vaughn and The Rock, awesome. I love Travolta he was really entertaining to watch, Chili Palmer seems to be a great character of his.
Bring it On monologue from The Rock was so funny. It might not've been greatest sequel. Though it was fun to watch, very funny performance from Vince Vaughn, I like the very first scenes with him..when he starts laughing like an idiot is hilarious.

lots of potential but a watered down finished product, hell they even make fun of their motive 2 minutes into the movie. I actually found vince vaughn to be annoying, but i definitely liked the rock. Christina Milian is fucking hot as hell, id like to split her open and knock beyonce out of the picture.
a big dissapointment, with a lot of redundant scenes (how many times are we gonna see the same scene of cedric the entertainer and his peeps doing the same ole thing).

Exactly what I was going to write. Very dissapointing movie, as it never really took off...especially the first twenty minutes or so, which felt like an eternity. But Vaughn, Andre 3000, and especially The Rock were entertaining with their individual character traits. Oh, and John Travolta's face looked like it was made out of wax or something, he's trying to look a lot younger than he really is....very distracting.

for me it was the rock, cedric, andre 3000 & vince. that was it, the rest of the movie was tedious, boring, flat, repetive shit. very dissapointing. 5/10 and i think i'm being generous.

Family movies usually do better business, especially when they look as clever as The Pacifier. Hell, I wouldn't mind seeing it.
But not before I see Be Cool. :)

I noticed that, too. When he goes into the pawn shop and punches the guy and then says "Have a nice day", it looks like he's wearing a John Travolta mask made of clay.

One big frickin' in-joke with nothing in the center to support it. Humor may vary (I felt like walking out during the first half hour) and acting is just as sketchy as the comedy. Thurman acts like she's drunk off her ass, Travolta coasts by with none of the "cool" coolness of Chili from GET SHORTY, and the rest of the cast is filled with the usual hip-hop wannabe actors and musicians like Steven Tyler, who, in the film, claims that he isn't one of those singers who play themselves in movies. Ho ho ho. And, and, I can go another day without seeing Harvey Keitel trying to find words that rhyme with "G". Ugh. The bright spots that lift this movie to a higher rating are, surprise surprise, The Rock (showing comedic chops as a gay bodyguard) and Vince Vaughn, who's so into his Raji character, he goes from annoying to lame to awkward, to amusing, finally to hilarious. Sort of like Napoleon Dynamite. Otherwise, if you find characters referencing other (better) movies fascinating and/or funny, skip this.

I went to go see this movie with my bro today and it was actually a pretty gaddam good movie! This movie doesn't really have a solid easy-to-follow plot, at first it seemed like it was just a buncha scenes put together at random, with Travolta playing the most cool and charismatic role since his part as Vince in Pulp Fiction... Which is what I thought this movie tried to kinda come off as a slightly less-serious modern-day version of Tarantino's classic....
It's basically about how Travolta as a record producer is able to sign a very talented black girl for a singing contract, along with the help of Uma Thurman, the widow of a good friend of Travolta's, that was killed.... Vince Vaughan plays "the bad guy" who thinks he's black, and tries to kill Travolta and friends with the help of his gay aspiring actor body-guard Elliot (The Rock)! Plus you've got Cedric the Entertainer (who's never entertaining to me) leading a host of HUGE muscle-boud black men who think they're gangsters after Travolta as well....
Some of the scenes in this seemed like they were thrown in, just to be funny and believe me the ones with the Rock were really quite good! He does a great job of playing a gay beefed up wanna-be actor... Plus ya've got Harvey Keitel in it as the boss of Vince Vaughan, the rival record company trying to keep said talented black girl singer in her contract to begin with....
This director/writer of this movie was a blatant Tarantino/Pulp Fiction fan, as you've got Travolta and Uma Thurman together once again, and in a restaurant and in a dance scene again no less! Then you've got Mr. Keitel (who was also in Pulp Fiction) making a small reference to "From Dusk Til Dawn" a movie in which he starred in, alongside Quentin Tarantino (who also produced it as well)... If you're a fan of QT or of caper-comedies and would like to be amused and entertained by the Rock's first comedic (re: non-action) role in a movie, then, I highly recommend you see this for a good time to waste 2 hours! ;)

This thread is the reason I never trust anyone's, even the pro critic's, reviews. This movie was great. I have never seen Get Shorty so I had no expectations. The Rock, Vince Vaughn, Andre 3000, Cedric were great. Travolta played the part very well, but I wouldn't say great. You could stick someone else in there instead of Travolta like Bruce Willis and they would be just as good. I thought Uma was great too.
Would I rather go see Vin Diesel take off a diaper with salad tongs or The Rock do a monolouge from Bring It On....I take Be Cool anyday.

Never saw get shorty and i dont give a rats ass i dont go into a movie and judge with the original thats what is keepign people from having a good time let the fucking movie be its own. Some people all they do is compare this to the 1st one who gives a shit about the 1st this is the 2nd dont compare to the first let it stand out as its own first one was in about movies this is music to dif. plots so they ant gonna be the fucking same so judge it by what it is witch is one hell of a funny movie and the best of 04 and i seriously was not bored threw out the whole movie i though John T. did a great job by keeping it cool never getting pist.
The rest of the cast was also great this is just a great movie with unique charactors.

Family movies dont always do well and when i went to the movies i was surprised how many teens over the age of 15 going to see the pacifier and adults with no kids america is losing its taste in movies.

This movie is was good. I wasn't much involved and it wasn't anything great and spectacular. But this is definatly underrated
Vince Vaughn made a pretty goofy wigger, never thought I'd see THe Rock play a gay person. But hey, John Travolta was John Travolta, Harvey Keitel was Harvey Keitel and Cedric the Entertainer was Cedric the Entertainer, it's an easy B-movie but it believes in itself, it has lots of energy and it entertains.
Be Cool was cool, thats the bottom line

the pacing of this thread is leaning in the NAY NAY columns... :(
I liked this second installment and everyone rocked in this!
I just kinda wondered one thing..........
What the hell happened to Renee Russo's character? What The Hell?!?!?
It's been awhile since I have seen Get Shorty but I think Be Cool measured up to the 1995 film.
I hated the dance sequence. Referencing Pulp Fiction like that should have been cool, but going from twist dancing to Chuck Berry to booty dancing to the Black Eyed Peas is too much to stomach.

That's why you do what I did, and sleep through it. Even while nodding in and out of consciousness it was overlong, and unbearable. :)

I haven't seen Get Shorty and I have not interest in seeing this. Remember those days in cinema when they actually hired actors to act in films? :(

Seriously, the dance scene was totally unnecessary and felt out of place. But The Rock, Vince Vaughn, Andre 3000 and Cedric were hilarious; that made it worth my 9 dollars.

I liked this movie, I thought the comedy was a little sketchy but it was entertaining nonetheless. I've never seen Get Shorty so I can't comment on that but I did like this film. I do agree that the dance scene was unnecessary but hey, at least you can go grab some more popcorn.
Christina Milian is gorgeous and has one hell of a body. Much better than that tired fame-whore Beyonce. And Christina can actually hold a note. I sure hope she gets some good roles that will gain her more exposure in the future.
Uma's role is pretty superfluous to the main action but she has never looked better IMO. I thought she had some good chemistry with Travolta, who I've always sort of liked but I thought he did great here.
Harvey Keitel, Cedric the Entertainer, Steven Tyler, and Andre Benjamin were all just there and I didn't pay much attention to them at all and didn't even really notice when they appeared or not. Was bored by Danny DeVito's cameo. I do agree with those who say The Rock and Vince Vaughn were the best parts of the movie, although Vaughn really grated on my nerves in the first half of the film.
Not a great film by any means but I thought it was decent enough for a matinee.

This is no Get Shorty, but I wasn't expecting it to be and I had a great time. John Travolta was born to play Chilli Palmer. He is the epitome of cool. He's just awsome. Although Get Shorty is clearly better, one thing I did like in this movie more than the first is the main love interest. I like Uma Thurman more than Renee Russo. And she and Travolta have great chemistry. I love their dance scene although it didn't give me the same feeling I thought it was going to give (you know, that of an obvious nod to their dance scene in Pulp Fiction but I didn't get that feeling here). There were times when Vince Vaughn's schtick got annoying, but for the most part he was funny. The Rock is terrific here. I was cracking up so hard when he was reanacting the Bring it On scene! Cedric the Entertainer was even really cool here and Harvey Keitel is obviously having a blast here. And Christina Milian is great. She has a great voice too, if that's her that is singing that is.
I love how everything came together (although the ending is a little too similar to Get Shorty's ending which also involves a locker). I love how Chilli is so cool under pressure. Even when he's got a gun pointed at him and his life is in danger, which happens quite frequently in this movie, he never ever flinches.
This to me, was definately one of the more entertaining movies that has come out this year. It's not on Get Shorty's level but I still think it's great.
