Al Qaeda Plot To Kidnap Crowe

Al Qaeda planned to kidnap Russell Crowe when Gladiator was released in a bid to "culturally destabilise" the US.

The actor - who was given FBI protection - has revealed the bizarre plot in the new issue of GQ magazine.

The New Zealand-born star was first contacted by the FBI in 2001, he admitted.

"That was the first time I'd ever heard the phrase al Qaeda," Crowe said.

"It was about - and here's another little touch of irony - taking iconographic Americans out of the picture as sort of a cultural destabilisation plot."

Crowe was protected by the FBI on later film shoots and at events like the Golden Globe awards.

"I never fully understood what the **** was going on," he said.

"Suddenly it looks like I think I'm ****ing Elvis Presley, because everywhere I go there are all these FBI guys."

I somehow think that kidnapping Russell Crowe would not generate the kind of response Al Qaeda is hoping for.

Cultural destabilization? Nope. Osama thought he could drink Crowe under the table and it gets lonely in those caves without someone to play quarters with.

I probably wouldn't mind.

I know, I know, it's a heartless joke. But let's face it, the story's probably just a random threat (Al Qaeda's a professional organization, mistaking an Aussie for an American isn't exactly the kind of mistake they're used to), overblown.

But heck, even if it were true. Maybe being in captivity would shut Russell up -- and the world could definitely use some of that.

just saw this myself. This is pretty interesting news. I wonder what would happen "IF" that happened. To Hollywood and all..

I mean...that's what I'd try to pull if it were me.

This is the funniest thing I've heard of in a while, it sounds like something terrorists would do in an episode of South Park (specifically, the one where they kidnap the goat that they think is Stevie Nicks).
