I have an account with DVDSpot.com and I noticed that almost 85% of my 130some DVDs are from the 1990's and above. More discouragingly, almost 60% of my total collection is from the 2000s.

I've realized that one of the reasons for this is that I am addicted to buying DVDs and newer movies usually have better DVDs (loaded with features, Special Editions, i.e. non-barebones).

What I'm asking for here are suggestions of older (30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s) good movies with quality DVD editions available. Any help would be appreciated.

For starters, Citizen Kane and Casablanca both have very nice two disc versions.

Warners make a lot great 2-disc sets for their classics, like the already mentioned Casablanca and Citizen Kane, but also Meet Me in St. Louis, Singin’ in the Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and most recently The Philadelphia Story, The Band Wagon and Easter Parade (I haven’t seen all of these DVDs, but I know they are packed with extras and the movies are all great). And then of course, there's the 4-disc Gone with the Wind, with some 6+ hours worth of extras.

Also, 'Fox Studio Classics' DVDs are very good, they always include commentaries and made-for-tv star biographies. From those, I’d recommend All About Eve, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Leave Her to Heaven, Peyton Place, A Song of Bernadette, The Mask of Zorro…

I had the same problem for awhile. Pretty much go to the AFI top 100 of all time and just start at the top and work your way down. Most of them now have really good special editions.

Criterion discs are always good.

The James Bond movies all have really good special editions if you like that kind of movie.

All the new Warner Brother releases under Gangster Classics and Film Noir classics have interesting extras. All my WB Humphry Bogart movies have good extras.

All of the Alfred Hitchcock films from Universal have good extras.

Just some suggestions.
