Don't get me wrong, I know there are people who know that ratings for movies and games are good. They protect young kids from seeing movies that fuck up their minds...But god did this piss me off.
Its only happened twice in the past month, but god does this suck. I went with my 2 brothers to go see constantine. My little brother was going to see hitch, so it was going to be me and my big brother. Im not 18, but he's 16, and looks older than 18. We were refused a ticket, even when we had our father tell him we could see it, he said since he wasn't seeing it, then we can't see it. So, we bought a ticket to hitch, and were planning to go into constantine. We went to go get a bite to eat, and when we were walking back into the theater, I saw the ticket guy just watching me and my brother. Right when we got into constantine, we were taken out, and told if we go back in there, we will be kicked out. They were making jokes about it (seriously, im not joking.) But this pissed me off so much because, I have seen I heart huckabees there, I have seen alexander there, I have seen many R movies, but this never happened..WHY NOW?
The second time was with a videogame store, I saw this "Buy 2 previously owned games, get 1 free" deal. I was very excited because the last video game I bought was about 3 months ago, and I was getting bored with them. I got the getaway, True Crime : streets of L.A, and Dead to rights. Right when I went up to the guy, I heard him say while looking at the games "No, No, No". I asked why, he said in this bastardly voice " Because your not 17". He gave me a smile and took the games back. After that, I went to suncoast and bought Se7en and Equilibrium, with no problems at all. I go to my friend who was at Gamespot, and he bought a M rated game, and he looks like hes 13....Im not just saying thats "Unfair", thats just a bastard thing to do to me for fucks sakes. He bought it from the same guy.
I know rating help once in a while, but why the fuck do they need to rub it in my face, but I guess not let me buy it if im under 18, but look 18. When a friend whos under 18, but looks like hes younger, can buy stuff I couldn't?
Im hoping I don't sound like a whiny teenager, but this is the rant forum, and god damnit this pissed me off!

I feel you.
Once, at Suncoast, I was going to buy a used DVD of Porky's (it was only $7), and I went up to buy it and he said "Are you 17?" And me, being the trustworthy person I am, said "No, I'm 16". He said I couldn't buy it, and I said I had already seen it, but he wouldn't let me buy it.
When I was still a slave to Blockbuster, I was renting Fight Club and This is Spinal Tap (I was alone), and when I went up to rent them, the person there said, "Do your parents know you're renting these?" I said "Yes", and she let me rent them. Like I'd actually say no.
Right now, I'm just pissed that Sin City's coming out in April and not October. If it was coming out in October, I could legally see it and give money to it, but I guess my money'll have to go to Ice Princess or something to let me go see it.

I symphasize with you, I went to see Saw, and I was asked for a ID, and I look like I am 30 years old. :D It was stupid and ridiculous that they have to ask someone if they are 18. Besides, we are at a age that our minds cannot be warped anymore, and we are basically immune to what is in the world because we have seen them over and over again, and those people are just trying to delay the inevitable, that or either they are rednecks that think everything is funny.

I know what you guys are talking about. I'm 18 now, but before then I had trouble getting into R rated movies. I remember wanting to go see 8 mile. My mom was there too with a friend of hers going to see something else and my younger brother was going to see something else too (Harry potter I think). My mom was buying the ticket, but they wouldn't let her when they asked her who it was for. Even after she told them she was my mother and she didn't care if I saw it. So we waited a few minutes, and then she bought one ticket to 8 mile in another line and just gave it to me. It's fucked up too because I look like I'm in my mid 20's (and did back then too).
I haven't had any problems since then though. It's great when you can legally get into these things; I can even get my 15 year old brother into R movies.

I agree, there's no need to rub it in your face. But...
I work at a movie theatre, and it's part of my job to id kids. I couldn't care less what they saw, I went to R rated movies as a kid, but it's a job and I have to do it. So when kids don't have i.d and act like I'm out to get them, it pisses me off. You wouldn't expect a kid to get into a bar, but it's the same law, you're not allowed in. It's not my fault, I can't change the laws, so quit being a bitch about it.
Backstabba, this isn't directed towards to you, just underage kids in general that I've had to deal with in the past.

I'm not 18 yet, but I look old enough that they don't really care anymore. And plus, with living in Canada, the ratings are all more lenient.
But I've been through exactly what you have. My sister tried to get into Scary Movie 3 (yeah, it sucked) even though she wasn't old enough. We managed to get tickets because the ticket lady thought my mom would be with us. We get there and I tell my sister to sit next to an older lady. Sure enough, douchebag bitch pops her head into the theatre to try and stop my sister like she was Lee Harvey fucking Oswald. But she didn't see her and left.
Some people need a Goddam life.

I remember once I wanted to see Eyes Wide Shut but I was under 18 at the time so I had to get my mom to buy the ticket. She didn't want to do it at first. Not because she didn't want me watching the movie, mind you (she didn't have any trouble letting me watch it) but rather because she was actually kind of embarrassed to purchase a ticket for that movie since it was suppose to have a lot of sex in it. Heh. Luckily, she bought it for me anyways and I was able to see it.
It's wierd though. Sometimes they will let you watch the movie if your parent purches your ticket with you and then you get it stamped. But other times they actually require the parent to watch it with you. Very odd.
Not that it matters for me anymore. I haven't been carded in years. I'm a regular visiter to my local theater (I'm there a bare minimum of once a week) so they all know I'm over 18. And even if they did card me I always carry my I.D. with me.

In Canada it was 14A (Adult Accompaniment Required for those under 14). I was not an adult, so technically, she couldn't see it unless someone over 18 saw it with her.

Is it required to card? The MPAA system is voluentary, so would you be required to card people who look underage?
At the theater where I work, we never card people, since we only have two screens and most of the movies we get are R, which I think is a good way of going about it.

Backstabba doesn't mind at all if he's not allowed in or gets caught, he just doesn't like it when they act all high and mighty about it like they're waving their age in your face.
I have two theatres in my area...one is strict as fuck and the other is more laid back. Of course the strict one is the better quality one in terms of service. If I ever get caught or something along that I apologize and co-operate, but when they start being pricks about it and start going "hurk hurk hurk i am older hurk hurk hurk" i treat them as equal as they're treating me.

When I was 16, I did what I wanted. people weren't so fucking uptight back then. It's the rise of the religious right that is responsible for our Quaker-like regress into the middle ages.

Getting a 9 year old into Saw is something to be proud of. Dude you're awesome.
Grebdron has got it right about the religious right. I never ever had a problem back in the day (early to mid 90's) getting into R-rated movies or renting them. For christ sakes I was like 14 or 15 rented Bikini Car Wash Company 1 & 2 one night when my parents were out. Needless to say I had developed carpal tunnel syndrome by the end of the night.

I used to have my mom bet the tickets for me and my friends. It was a movie theater outside of the mall, and we'd wait in the mall or something, and she'd get the tickets.
I had no problem when Scream 3 came out, Probably cause when we went inside there was a line to get into the theater, but with Scary Movie I almost ran into trouble. My mom got the tickets, and when we went inside some guy was standing infront of the door to go into the theater, and asked to look at the tickets. We had Scary Movie tickets, and than he asked my friend and I (which my friend looks really young even today) who bought the tickets, I said one of our friends was 18, and was outside smoking. He let us in with a little hesitation. The funny thing is I acctually believed the kid outside was 18, I ended up finding out he was only 15.
I had trouble recently too. I went to see Harold and Kumar go to White Castle with a friend, and went we go to the teller, she asked us for Id. Both of us are over 18, and at that time we both haden't shaved. My friend thought he lost his ID so we started walking away, but he ended up finding somewhere in his wallet.
I just have a question.... when you young kids go, and they ask for ID or something in the theater is it during the afternoon? Cause with Scary Movie and Harold and Kumar they were in the afternoon, and all the other times I went at night I never really had a problem.
Also I think you have to be 21 to be with someone young to see an R movie. When I went to see Texas Chainsaw... my friends brother came, and the guy said he couldn't go in unless someone was 21. Luckily one of the kids that was with us was 21.

I'm 15 and I've never had any trouble getting into R-rated movies. In the UK though we don't have R-rated movies, most movies rated R in America get a 15 (Troy, Collateral) or an 18(Kill Bill) here. They never refused to sell me tickets to 15 movies when I was underage, and if I want to go see an 18 I just have to buy a ticket to another movie and sneak in.
On a related note, ratings are full of crap becuase I've never seen or heard of kids being negatively affected by violent or sexual movies (or video games for that matter). Yeah there was the whole "killing-of-small boy-inspired-by-Child's Play 3" thing going on over here a few years ago, but there is NO evidence to support that Child's Play 3 was indeed responsible (even the police denied it!).

ha this reminds me of a time back when i was 16 and my friend was 19.. and we were buying like 10 tickets for an R rated flick (cant remember which one it was though)... and i looked like iw as like 22... so i went up to the counter and bought 5 tickets, and my friend went to the counter next to me, and the bitch asked for his ID and because he wa sonly 19.. she would only let him buy 2 tickets! So he gave me the $$ and i just bought 3 more at the window i was at!
Good Times!
Ive only been carded once, and that was after i was 17... so it didnt really matter that much!
Now im 20... and looking older has helped me with getting alcohol all the time!
Was never an issue for me before I turned 17 (6'3", broad-shouldered...enjoy long walks on the beach, turn-offs include...), and it certainly isn't now.
But I feel for movieguy...Sin City is going to be sick (as in ill).
That does suck, but it is the rules I suppose. Still, whose to say how old you have to be to be old enough? It's just the same as the driving age and the drinking age: according to the law, on one day you are not old enough to drink but in 24 hours you will be. Please.

I don't exactly 'sympathise'. You have youth on your side, life is generally pretty peachy...wait for it to come to DVD, it hardly takes all of five minutes nowadays! Or horror of horrors, blag a really shitty pirate copy for the equivalent of about fifty pence down the high street...if you're that desperate!
BUT I don't 'get' the smugness bit. We're ridiculously apologetic by nature in Britain, so it's not really the done thing here. I've refused to sell underage kids booze, fags and movies before now...and I've NEVER been smarmy about it. It's just not on, it tends to be more a case of the following:
"Any I.D on ya? Sorry, no can do then...okay? No probs. Sorry mate but you know how it is...etc, etc...cheerio, seeyah, buh-bye"
If somebody is rubbing it in your face for a giggle their life must be pretty fucking mundane. I wouldn't even waste time dwelling on it.

Sin City's the type of movie you see in theaters, not on DVD. It's like if DVD was created 40 years ago, and someone said "I'll just wait for Lawrence of Arabia to come to DVD" and they watch it and don't like it.

I thought you could pretty much see ANYTHING in the US if accompanied by an adult. If that's the case you want to start greasing up your folks...here in Britain it's not even an option, they wouldn't let you see The Passion Of The Christ even if you were chaperoned by a 60 year old Nun! Im all for certificates on movies, can not imagine my kids just going to the cinema and watching anything. Don't get me wrong im no prude and in the comfort of me own home my kids can watch a lot of stuff with me there. My 7 year old counts the days till he goes to his grandads to watch some bucket of blooders. (thats what my dad calls a horror movie)
:D . I just think we need some sort of guidance with films and then the rest is up to the parents to decide whats best for their kids.
I can't believe TATU, you took a nine year old to see SAW, lol. Was you allowed to take him or did you sneak the little en their with you cause you wanted to see it? I probably would let my kids see it, but maybe after i'd vetted it first. But then again I am a big girl when it comes to horror/thriller movies, love em but they scare the beejesus out of me.:p

I feel you.
I'm 16 going on 17 this coming January. I'm looking very forward to my 17th because then when those dumb movie ushers ask if I am 17 in that wise ass voice I can take out my ID and make them SHUT THE FUCK UP!
Generally I find R movies for the most part pretty easy to sneak in. The most recent one I can think of would have to be Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Me and 2 friends bought tickets to Mr. 3000 walked towards that theater, waited till the ticket nazi turned her back on us, shimmyed along the wall and ran up the stairs yelling "FOR FREEDOM!"
Sometimes there are doors outside the theater and those can make it pretty damn easy to get in when they aren't guarded. The thing is...it's all about the ticket ripper or the person who is selling you the tickets. The worst is one time when I got a ticket for Black Hawk Down, payed my 9$, then went to the ticket ripper only to be told that I WASN"T ALLOWED IN? And when I was denied a refund me and my friend just sat at the Crusin' USA machine and by some act of god that ticket ripper left. An old, gentle looking ticket ripper came over and we casually walked over and he gave us a big smile and let us right in.
Generally I think its all about the people you're dealing with. But yeah, if they ticket ripper or ticket seller rubs it in your face for not being old enough that is enough to make you wanna bring a shotgun back there and blow his damn face off.
I am very worried about getting into Sin City. Very worried indeed.

Personally I don't feel your pain, nor do I sympathize. There were plenty of movies I wanted to see when I was underage and couldn't. It's a fact of life.
As far as the scene at the movie theater you encountered, I'd probably have done the same thing to you, as you intentionally tried to decieve the theater. Anytime an underage kid wants to go to an R rated movie, is told "no," then buys a ticket to a different movie - you are putting a bullseye on your back and all eyes will be on you.
The real irony is that once you turn 18, 19, 20, whatever - you'll start bitching "What are these fucking kids doing in an R rated movie?!"

What I hate is when the adolescents sneak around and shit, and then when the mommies find out, they come stampeding in and wanting to snort their cunt breath into everyone's face.
If I worked at a theater, and some kid's mom came in bitching because her son snuck in and watched a Rated R movie and she's pissed off about it... I would really feel like slapping her. Or at least throwing something at her, like a large cherry coke without ice, or some of those individual milk duds until she got the hint and fucking went away.

I'm sorry. I took t he plunge and went with my pops. I would kill the ticket seller if he denied me, 16 years old, a ticket to a movie I can see in less that 365 days.
The movie is REALLY uncomfortable...but only if you sit next to your dad. Heh, me and 2 friends moved up closer.
Take the plunge my man!

Me = Horrible Liar, when he asked me what my age was, I took a long pause... :(
And to : ChemicalRomance
My dad said he will take me next weekend if he can,....hopefully it's not "TOO" uncomfortable....
....He found Reservoir Dogs, true romance, and fight club...unconfortable....
......
.....
......Any movie that has a review with "castration" pluralized, will probably be uncomfortable :D
.....What do you mean by "Take the plundge my man!"

I live in Canada, so like it was said earlier I have to be 18 to see the R ones...I'm 17...BUT me and my friend had a plan! He got his friend from work to go, and he's like 25.
You see, the trick is to just get him to say that he's your guardian...The guy, Joel, just simply said that our parents were out of town for the weekend and he was watching us...The ticket ripper, nor even the fuckin manager can't do shit all...They probably wouldn't even put up much of a fuss.
And hot damn whatta movie! Missed the first ten minutes or so, but ah well....And yes, if you thought watching Reservoir Dogs with your dad was uncomfortable, then you will be squirming all throughout Sin City.
Backstabba, do you know any older fellas...Like a cousin or relative that likes violent movies that'd take you in? Or do your friends? Try the plan my friend used for us, it'll work.

The following trick worked for Sleepy Hollow.
Myself and another were 18. Two others weren't. We bought our tickets, and walked away from the cashier and outside the theater.
I handed my ballcap to my friend, and took off my button downed shirt that I had opened. He put it on and buttoned it up, and walked back with just a t-shirt and no ball cap. We bought two more fuckin tickets.
Walked back out, gave the tickets to the friends, walked back in properly dressed and handed our tickets to the usher across the crowded lobby.
The end.

Heh, I plan to check it out with my old man within the next week...I'm sure that the sexual stuff won't be a problem (we're pretty comfortable around each other when it comes to the issue of coitus), but the sadistic content/violence might not be pleasant to sit through with him (I dragged him to see FREDDY VS. JASON, big mistake!).
On-topic, rubbing it in your face definitely isn't polite, but up to a point you just got to accept the fact that they're gonna make it difficult until you're of age. And just think of how great it will be once that happens.

Ackbar, you find violence to be uncomfortable?
Me and my dad are okay with violence but I just don't wanna be sitting next to him whena g irl is getting fucking boinked, with her tits, bouncing and this guy with this big grin on his face talking about how greatttt i was.
The Sin City violence isn't necesarrily uncomfortable because it's unrealistic.
Good luck my man.

Violence usually never bothers me, but I know that my dad doesn't care for it when it's quite graphic and/or sick, and I always feel awkward when I'm the one who's responsible for him having to sit through it. I'm somewhat more comfortable with sex scenes (though not always) since I know he secretly has a soft spot for that kind of stuff.

Those are some odd stories, I tell you. I saw Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" in the theatres in 1999 when I was 12 years old. And this is Finland, so none of that infamous censoring in our Kubrick. If I remember correctly, all I was asked was if I often saw films like this.

Ok this really pissed me off. I tried to see Sin City a second time with some friends. The would let of us because some of us were not 17 yet and no one was 21 to get us in. Well Saturday I went to the same theater only to see Kung Fu Hustle this time. I was out with a guy that was 21, so I thought I wouldn't have a problem getting a ticket. Well I was wrong. They still wouldn't let me in because I didn't have a proof of age (not that I was 17 anyway). I argued that I had been told that if I was seeing a movie with someone 21 or above that I could see the movie regardless of age. The chick still wouldn't let him buy the tickets. You can't just say one thing and then up and change your fucking mind. It's utter bullshite!

I also agree with BCV, the whole smugness bit really reveals a mid-20s nobody taking the most mundane power trip known to man.
Heh you think thats bad, 5 minutes before a screening of blade 2 I saw the cinema manager and asked him to throw all the kids out. And he did. Thats one nil to us miserable old bastards. Ha ha.

I find it funny when people on this board refer to the employees that let the underage kids go into rated R flicks as cool, or nice... but the people who wont let you in, or buy a ticket are just ass holes (i'm simplifying here). The fact is, those ass holes are doing their jobs, and the nice people, aren’t.
Most people haven’t dealt with kid’s moms or dads when they find out that their kids saw an R film, just deal with it… and most people don’t know how many kids get kicked out of rated R theaters for being loud, as opposed to being under aged.

I don't really mind people doing their job. Its when they are being smug and then don't follow the stipulations on the rule about under aged kids going to see a rated R film (which happened in my case) that pisses me off.

okay theres way too many things going on in this thread already to reply to, so I'm just going to list:
- I absolutely fucking HATE it when groups of teenagers are in movies, it makes me want to kill everyone
- I don't mind being I.D.ed (the ironic thing is that when you get 18 and you are legal, you want to rub it in by getting I.D.ed and shoving the shit in their face but they hardly ask for it anymore)
- To those who are talking about seeing Sin City...get this...the movie theaters here (at least the big ones) are I.D.ing EVERYONE and even people under 18 with adults can't get in. Its way too harsh since my younger bro is 16 and hes seen alot worse shit than Sin City with me, but he cant even get in with my parents.
- I was never I.D.ed when I was 15, 16, 17...truth be told I never tried to sneak in either, I always had foresight in something to know that if I wanted to see it bad enough I'd get someone to take me (even my girlfriend whose a year older hehe :))
- Selling tobacco to youth (anyone under 18) where I used to work could result in a $3000 fine for a first time offense and up to $15000 for repeat offenses and trust me I didnt have that type of money. Just remember, if working in the movie theater is at all the same (I HIGHLY doubt it is) then by not I.D.ing they can get in HUGE shit and I personally wouldn't hesitate to I.D. Although if someone was with a parent I really wouldn't care, just would inform the parent on why it's rated what it is because sometimes they just don't know.
- I was never rude or belligerant to people who tried to buy smokes without I.D., just when people thought that they had the right to smoke because they 'have been for years'. The point of the matter is you could be 30 and if you don't have anything to prove you are and you are I.D.ed, they don't have to let you do shit. (not saying that to anyone in particular, just all these dumbasses that used to get mad at me because they wanted smokes and looked like they might be 20-something, I loved reaming out dipshits like that...made my life worth living while at that horrid building)

Yeah but nowadays we call those hobos "pedophiles".
One advantage though is that they have to list their addresses to the public, which makes them pretty easy to find.
