...is it me, or is this trying to be ROCKY VI: THE STORY OF ROCKY'S GRANDFATHER IN THE 20s?

I like it, with the Cast Away theme playing throughout.
Oh, and doesn't look half bad. But I've never been a fan of Crowe.

Looks like it will be this years Seabiscuit. They're very similar thematically.

Both are true stories based on Depression-era folk heroes.
But Cinderella Man will show more about what it was like for a poor family trying to live during that time, while the characters in Seabiscuit were wealthy horse owners and the only things it showed about life during the depression were the cut in newsreel footage.

It looks like oscar bait, but that's not neccessarily a bad thing. Infact, I think it looks great. Russell Crowe, Renee Zellweger, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer rarely, if ever, disappoint. So I'm definately there!

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm probably there too. But it doesn't look or feel as original as I thought it might be with all that talent involved. And especially right after a "boxing" movie like MILLION DOLLAR BABY came out, with so much quality and intelligence and emotion, I'm afraid that the Oscar-bait strategy might not work, because compared to BABY, this does look like it's too conventional to stand the comparison. And people might be thinking of that.
Then again, maybe the movie's greater than great, trailers can only tell you so much. But it did feel like the trailer of a Rocky movie set in the 20s (heck, some of the lines could even be put in a ROCKY VI -- "This is one fight, not a comeback" or the "So are they" line with the folks praying in the church for Crowe not to get his ass handed to him).

I think this looks like it is going to be a great one, but Rene Zellwenger? come on, she went unpopular after she made Nurse Betty. :D

So do I and they said it was pretty intense. That's not the actual music in the trailer, either. They put it togther to sell it in a certain way and there's a fairly significant portion of the film that's not really covered in the trailer.

"Hello, my name is Russell, and I'd like an Oscar"
I think this looks awful! Every cliché thats ever been used in a family/sporting/depression-era movie is right there in the trailer. "They've come to pray for him", "He's changed their lives", etc...
Paul Giamatti must really need some cash after his great, low-budget movies.

Since I guess this is positive I can say this.
Ive read the shooting script. It really is wonderful and has a bunch of heart. It has a formula story kind of but it does it so well. See it when it comes out.
