In 2003
... 29 movies finished over the $100 million mark.
... 6 finished over the $200 million mark.
... 3 finished over the $300 million mark.

In 2004
... 23 finished over $100. (24 when Million Dollar Baby makes it)
... 6 finished over $200.
... 3 finished over $300.
... 1 finished over $400.

What will 2005 look like?

So far, Hitch is the only film to have crossed $100 million. Robots and The Pacifier seem to be on the way and The Ring Two has an outside chance.

Hopefully Sin City.

And hopefully it won't encourage them to make an uneeded sequel!

War of the Worlds
Batman Begins
Star Wars Episode III
Fantastic Four

All these films are guaranteed in my opinion to make over 100mil.

the following should make it
Star wars 3
King kong
War of the worlds
Sin city (good word of mouth should make it pass 100 mil)
Charlie and the choclate factory
Robots
The pacifier (if it doesnt it should come close)
the ring 2 (has a slight chance)
Saw 2 (i think this will open huge since the first one was very popular and maybe if it is as good or better it should pass 100 mil it all depends)
Batman begins

That film looks a Grade A turkey.

I doubt the box office take will cover the budget let alone pass 100 million.

I, like many others, would like to see SIN CITY gross more than $100M. There are two factors that might hinder it though. First, It's not being hyped enough. The only place it's really getting a lot of attention is online. I've only seen one tv spot for it so far. Best Buy is offering an exclusive behind the scenes DVD at it this week, which might help. But, people can't go see a movie they don't know exists. Second, as shown in JoBlos's report, family movies and comedies have really taken the lead so far this year. Hitch, The Pacifier, and Robots have done very well. I believe people got sick of all the either extremely dramatic or depressing tearjerkers we saw last year, like THE AVIATOR, FINDING NEVERLAND, RAY, and MILLION DOLLAR BABY (all 5 STAR movies for me). So, now they want to be able to take they're kids to the theatre and laugh. Critical opinion may also influence moviegoing, all though 03's badly reviewed BAD BOYS II (which I agree was bad), 04's negatively reviewed THE GRUDGE, and this years critically dissed THE PACIFIER all went on to be big hits. So, all these factors will influence the box office outcome, but here are some I believe will make it:

-SIN CITY
-WAR OF THE WORLDS
-STAR WARS EPISODE III: ROTS (that's pretty much a 100M or more guarantee)
-BATMAN BEGINS
-MR. AND MRS. SMITH (depending on reviews)

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS was a big hit when it was released, so Burton's next animated film THE CORPSE BRIDE will probably do well with the "from the director of TNBC" attached to it. I know WILLY WONKA is probably not the best choice for a remake, but in the hands of a genius like Tim Burton I believe it will be good, and probably do well. The fact that both of these films star Johnny Depp, who hasn't had a flop in years, and is now everyone's favorite celebrity, pretty much guarantees their success.

Burton didn't direct The Nightmare Before Christmas.

You really think Sahara will make $100 million, and both Dark Water and The Amityville Horror $150 million? I would have to very strongly disagree with that. Oh, add Land of the Dead to that list. That and The Amityville Horror will be/are rated R. They have no chance in hell of making that much money. On the flip side, I would be willing to bet some serious cash that Batman Begins makes more than $150 million, unless it totally sucks ass.

Most of the more obvious films have been mentioned, however I'd like to add The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy to the list. With the PG rating, the slowly but surely building hype, and the positive response to the trailers, the film is sure to do well both with families and fans of the genre, as well as fans of the original novels.

I think Sahara has a pretty good chance at being a big hit. It could even be the begining of a pretty big franchise.

Movies that possibly get there:

XXX: State of the Union
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Longest Yard
Kingdom of Heaven
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Mr. and Mrs Smith
Cinderalla Story (a little iffy, but it could be this year's Seabiscuit and not to mention it's Ron Howard)
Batman Begins
Bewitched
War of the Worlds
Fantastic Four
The Island
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Zathura
King Kong
The Legend of Zorro

I'm also ??? on The Amityville Horror. It will probably do well, but I'm not sure how well. But I think it has a strong chance of making it as well.

The Brothers Grimm I have no idea about.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory looks awful but it could be a massive hit or a massive bomb
The Dukes of Hazard I'm also not sure about
Stealth could be a big hit but not sure.

Also as awsome as Sin City looks I'm not sure how much mainstream appeal it has but I certainly hope it does great.

What makes you think Sahara might be a hit? Don't forget that Clive Cussler has publicly stated his unhappiness with the studio concerning the movie, particularly the script and cast. I believe he has stated that he wants nothing to do with it at this point. I can see it doing OK box office, but I think it has very little chance of making $100 million.

It looks like a fun adventure/popcorn movie. Sort of like National Treasure which was a huge hit.

MadsenOMC
03-27-2005, 07:53 PM
But Cage is a much bigger draw than McConaughey, and National Treasure had a major holiday release date and Jerry Bruckheimer's name attached to it.

ilovemovies
03-27-2005, 08:16 PM
That might be true, but many people have seen the trailer and I think they are probably going to want to see this movie. It might not be a HUGE hit, but I do believe that, unless it sucks and the word of mouth is bad, it could be a pretty decent sized hit.

And who knows, mayb this movie could finally be the movie that allows McConaughey to become an A-list. Something that he was supposedly suppose to become way back when A Time to Kill came out.

Movies that will surpass $100,000,000:
Batman Begins
Casshern (if it gets some awesome marketing)

Cinderella Man
Fantastic Four
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Island
King Kong
Kingdom of Heaven
Madagascar
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Sin City
Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
War of the Worlds

Movies that will come close:
The Bad News Bears

Robots
Sahara
Saw 2
Spy Hunter

MadsenOMC

Robots will easily surpass $100 million. It has already made more than $87 million and it's not going to be leaving theaters anytime soon. The Pacifier will pass the century mark as well.

My predictions for 100m+:

King Kong
The Chronicles of Narnia
Fantastic Four
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Sin City
Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
War of the Worlds
Robots
The Pacifier

Possibilities:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (I think it will be too weird and turn ppl off)
The Island
Kingdom of Heaven
Madagascar
Batman Begins

There are only a few sure-things for the $100 Mil + Club This Year:

Star Wars
War of the Worlds
King Kong
Batman Begins
The Longest Yard (If you think about it, this is a guaranteed monster hit)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Others that I think have a shot:

The Fantastic Four (even thought it will suck balls)
The Island
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (this will be huge or totally fucking bomb)
The Chronicles of Narnia
Madagascar

Movies that I think have no chance to hit the $100 Mil mark:

Sin City (I'm seeing this in 1 hour, but I just think it will have a hard time finding an audience and make no more than 50-60 mil total)
Hitchhikers Guide (It will do fairly well, but it doesn't have a big enough fan base to hit 100 mil)
Sahara (God know this might be fun, but it won't be a blockbuster)
Amityville Horror (This looks awesome, but at best it'll hit 70-80 mil like TCM did)

Well I'm off to lunch and SIN CITY!!!

All these films are guaranteed in my opinion to make over 100mil.

Without a doubt... In fact, all four will run at 200 million domestic.

Also, having seen Sin City, it has no chance. I'm a comic fan and I thought it was awful. Word of mouth will doom it FAST.

I loved Sin City, but it really doesn't have much of a chance at 100 mil (even though the theatre was packed, seems huge with the college crowd, myself included).

Besides the three that already did (Hitch, Robots, The Pacifier), I would think these:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
War of the Worlds
Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith
King Kong
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Batman Begins
The Producers
The Corpse Bride
Fantastic Four
The Longest Yard
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Madagascar
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Kicking & Screaming
Cinderella Man
Land of the Dead
Chicken Little

Predicted 2005 Grosses Over $100 Million:

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - 350 M
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - 275 M
War of the Worlds - 270 M
King Kong - 265 M
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 255 M
Batman Begins - 210 M
Fantastic Four - 190 M
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - 185 M
*Hitch - 185 M
Kingdom of Heaven - 170 M
The Island - 150 M
Chicken Little - 150 M
Valiant - 140 M
Mr. and Mrs. Smith - 135 M
*Robots - 130 M
The Longest Yard - 130 M
Madagascar - 125 M
The Producers - 125 M
Cinderella Man - 120 M
Legend of Zorro - 120 M
Bewitched - 115 M
Elizabethtown - 110 M
XXX: State of the Union - 110 M
Rent - 105 M
*The Pacifier - 105 M
The Amityville Horror - 105 M
Dukes of Hazzard - 105 M
Sin City - 101 M

*already passed $100 million
300+ - 1
200+ - 6
100+ - 28

Considering how well family movies have done this year, combined with how big fantasy is right now, I really think Narnia will beat out War of the Worlds and King Kong for the #2 spot behind the obvious #1.

JCR

If XXX 2 makes more than 100M I will fear for the fucking sanity of the human race quite frankly. And much as I love romero LOTD will do well to reach 70M imo.

I think hitchhikers will make it though.
