I think it's a bit too early to read much into the 100% rating. It's going to be mostly liked, I bet, but there's going to be a lot of critics who HATE it.

There are 8 reviews in. Only one "Cream of the Crop." Let's calm it down a little.

100% or no - it's gonna have one hell of a rating when all is said and done.

I'm gonna predict its final score is in the mid-to-high 80s.

Fuck ratings. Even if it had -210% I'd still be there with bells on!

I'm really looking forward to SIN CITY, but we don't need ANOTHER thread on it, this is the sixth one on this page.

Uh oh.

It still says it's at 100% but it has one negative review so far.

Here's the one negative review so far:

"Film noir on steroids; a movie so cool you’re not supposed to be concerned about its total lack of moral grounding. Nor its profound sexism. Nor its misanthropic nihilism."

RE:

He disliked the film because it's extremely nihilistic, cynical and violent.

And to be honest, his point is valid because the film IS all of those things. Quite obviously Sin City is of an acquired taste, and many people will embrace it for the exactly same reasons that this critic disliked it.

He did say that the film was well made, thought, and he gave it 66/100.

This is what I was afraid of. And the main problem I had with the comics, there's just no real point to the story.

Miller has done far better work in Batman, DareDevil, Ronin, etc.

Most people like the comic and are looking forward to the movie because it is dark and nihilistic, because they think that's "cool" for some reason.

Thanks to that one review Sin CIty is down to 90%

And even that review wasn't so bad. His main complaint about was how dark it was, not about how it was shot/acted, etc.

At this point, I just want a kickass R rated film that doesn't cut away every time there is about to be some violence or bloodshed onscreen. I hate the crap. It's been too long since PREDATOR or TOTAL RECALL. SIN CITY looks to fill this void quite well.

EvilEd
03-27-2005, 07:03 PM
The reason they can get away with the violence in this one is because it's in B&W. If it had been in Color, they'd a seriously had to trim it down to get an R.

But yeah, I miss the day's of Predator, Total Recall, Robocop, Conan, Aliens, Terminator, etc. Good ole rated R, can't beat it.

Just to sweeten the fact that the movie will kick ass, the folks at NECA have got equally sweet figures from the movie! Marv, Hartigan and Gail are up for review here (http://www.mwctoys.com/REVIEW_032805a.htm). Here are some tempting pics for you:

Sin City is now down to 74% at ROTTENTOMATOES.com. It's not quite looking so stellar anymore. I'll still see it regardless. But it's not getting the crtical praises that some thought. It seems as if the major complaint is with the writing. They say it sounds stilted and funny, and the characters are one-note. Since everything is taken straight from Miller's work, well, I guess they don't like the novels either.

I look at the paying public. In the end they will make or break a movie. This will not be a main stream movie. They may just break even.

I think it will do more mainstream business than what some people are saying. I'm thinking at least 30 million, but I wouldn't be surprised at 40 for opening weekend numbers.

Even if they only break even at the B.O. the real money to be made on a film is in the DVD rental and sales. At the very least I think that this film will have a great opening weekend and will then level off to normal levels. I don't think it shouldn't have any problem breaking even at all.

I just saw a sneak preview of this movie a few hours ago by accident. I walked in to ask about a showtime for the upcoming Wrestlemania 21 and there was a guy in there asking if anyone wanted passes to see the preview that he was supposed to give to friends that didn't show up so I took one from him. Anyway I saw this movie and all I could think was wow. I wasn't expecting much from this movie since I wasn't familiar with the Sin City comic as far as actually reading it but as I watched the movie I couldn't get over how cool the atmosphere was. I loved the black and white. This film would not be the same if it was completely in color. To me the movie was just fun. Yeah it was violent and pretty graphically disturbing at some scenes. I didn't think it was possible to make Elijah Woods into a freak but he plays one creepy guy in this movie. I am not generally a fan of Mickey Rourke but he was awesome as Marv, just hilarious in that dark humor sort of way. Carla Gugino doing a nude scene! I didn't see that coming since I'm used to her whole Spy Kids thing. Of course being it is a comic book inspired movie there were some scenes that were hard to buy being that from what I could tell these characters were not supposed to be superhuman. Marv takes some hits that would normally kill a person in a second(see the movie and you'll know what I mean), but that adds to the humor of his character at the same time so I was able to forgive it. In the end the movie isn't completely realistic in it's action and even some over the top acting(seemed that way with Britany Murphy in some scenes but maybe she was told to be that way) but neither are a lot of great movies. The action was fun to watch all the same though. I really liked the internal dialogue that went on through a great chunk of the movie. To be honest watching this movie was a lot like reading a comic book in it's style and presentation. I think I will pick this up on DVD(even though I'm betting it will end up being one of those double dipped DVD's just to get on my nerves). I'm not a film critic(I'll leave that to the people who actually understand the ins and outs of movies) and I'm not saying go out and see it right away, I'll leave that for you to judge on your own, all I'm saying is that I liked it and if I listened to all the bad reviews I would have missed the good couple hours of fun I had watching Sin City.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Screw that if, I want people to hate this movie now.

I want to see Sin City too, but this is overhying to the nth degree here. There are about 4 to 5 threads I see in this forum all saying SIN CITY SIN CITY SIN CITY! The mods won't close them, because they want to see it too! Seriously, all of you hate hype and then a movie like this comes along and you're all "OMG SIN CITY BEST MOVIE EVER I KNOIW IT WILL BE A 10/10!" How do you know that? The trailer and clips? We've been fooled many a times by those people, this would be the same.

And it's understandable why people wouldn't like it, the movie is dark and violent, the characters can be considered unlikeable, the narrative structure will be shit probably(I don't know what was going through Rodriguez's head there with intertwining the stories-one of them takes place over 8-10 years and the others in a day!). So how about all of you just calm down and stop expecting another Pulp Fiction( x1000).

One of the things I'm hearing is that The Big Fat Kill is the weakest segment of the movie, and after having read the book (which I thank you for :D), I can say it pales next to That Yellow Bastard and The Hard Goodbye.

When it comes to Dwight, Rodriguez really should've adapted A Dame To Kill For. It's SO much better, and would've made Sin City untouchable. And, it takes place roughly at the same time as THG and the latter half of TYB, which would fit better in the overall scope of things.

Of course, I haven't seen the film yet, but I have the distinct feeling that TBFK is going to drag down what could've been a perfect movie, even if just a little bit.

I am still struggling to comprehend how this film has gotten so popular, especially before its release. I really feel like I've woke up from a coma and don't know jack shit about what's going on.

I think Someguy gave me an explanation awhile back, and it still didn't make sense to me.

I have never heard of Sin City prior to the 'hype'. Ever.

And looking at some of the film's individual resources outside of "Special guest director QT", I don't see what the hoopla is about, and the hoopla is the only thing that will probably drive me to the theater to see it.

It can't be Bruce Willis

Mikey Rourke

Alba

or Del Toro, or any of the others in the cast.

It can't be Rodriguez, I don't hear any hype over Once upon a time in Mexico/Desperados/Four Rooms/ or even From Dusk till Dawn...

Frank Miller? The man who's other creations to film have been Robocop, Daredevil, and Elektra. It can't possibly be that...

Also, Sin City does not seem like it is a main-stream comic book, and if it isn't, then how does 98% of the schmoes on here (and Rotten Tomatoes) literally drop their pants and jerk off in unison to the tune of this movie?

HELP ME OUT.

I just get that weird feeling that I'm going to go watch a clusterfucked movie, shake my head at it, give it a poor rating, and then hear people say "You just didn't get it." Well, let me be the first to tell you: This time, you're probably fucking right.

This film lives up to the hype. Mickey Rourke's performance is incredible. As is most of the rest of the cast.

Watch the film and get back to us.

Before the film came out is what I'm wondering about.

If it was just simply watched and people fell in love with it, I would understand more probably, but I've been hearing about this film for months.

Many people in the comic book circuit were already framiliar w/ the Sin City series of books. Combined w/ the news of the solid casting, leaked footage, and the Weinstein hype machine in full throttle I'm not surprised that the buzz was as strong as it was before the film was even released. But as I have already said beofre-- this film lives up to the hype.
