It was a close race between the animated A-list, the fabulous Sandra, and a fearful Naomi Watts over the weekend, and it was the kids who pushed ROBOTS to the top with a healthy $2,558,474 (US $29,417,712). As nice as the intake is, it came close to 2002's Ice Age ($2.6m Opening / $20.4m Final), and it should hold well over the school holidays, but its per screen average couldn't match that of MISS CONGENIALITY 2 or THE RING 2 which both opened on less screens. The Sandra Bullock comedy sequel, averaging $8,122 on its 295 screens, earned a fine $2,396,125 (US $27,550,999), whilst the second coming of Samara managed a whopping $10,965 per its 189 screens for $2,072,475 (US $23,829,624). The original Miss Congeniality opened around the same time in 2001, but to a much healthier $4.3m opening on its way to a $20m finish, something that looks highly unlikely for Armed and Fabulous, whilst the original Ring managed $1.3m in Nov '02 to finish with $7.4m, a total that seems more in line for this sequel to achieve. The victor for the past three weeks, HITCH, settled for the 4th spot this week, only dipping 37%, managing a further $1,134,152. The Will Smith comedy has now pulled in a stellar $11,230,836 (US $129,133,814). Another film that could hold up over the coming weeks, THE PACIFIER bowed in at #5 with $798,389, taking its first week total to $914,743 (US $10,517,850), taking last weeks Advance Screening into account. Managing a stellar rise, Bill Murray saw THE LIFE AQUATIC increase 121% to a 2 week total of $540,072 (US $6,209,827). Making a surprise entrance into the Top 10 were the LADIES IN LAVENDER, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, who scored an impressive $286,411 (US $3,293,196) on 48 screens. Ordinarily a 48% drop from the Top 5 wouldn't result in a place outside the Top 10, but due to this weeks' new release slaughter, HATING ALISON ASHLEY lost out and slipped from #4 to #11. After two weeks in play the Delta Goodrem comedy has $964,751 (US $11,092,849) to its name. Another small release enjoying an increase was the controversial Gael Garcia Bernal drama BAD EDUCATION, which jumped up 132% from last weeks Advance Screening, to total $157,518 (US $1,811,165), averaging $7,776 on its 14 screens. Missing the Top 20 all together, proving that there is a God, was SON OF THE MASK, which only managed $27,246 (US $313,278). And speaking of God, he featured twice outside the Top 20 with both the re-release of THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, and the 'lower violence' version THE PASSION RECUT, Both made very little impact with the respective totals of $17,620 (US $202,597) and $5,533 (US $63,619).
THIS WEEK (March 31st): Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne unite and fight.
