This won't work. It CAN'T work. Unless of course they change the plot around so much that it's only a shadow of its former self.
-> 21st century and caller ID + Black Christmas = No way in hell it's going to make any goddamn sense.

This has been in development forever, and hopefully, the project won't progress much further. Horrendous idea.

I just want to jump in real quick to say 'Holy Shit'!
When I see a majority repsonse like this, it gives me hope.
I realize that this topic of remakes seems to be an ongoing debate with no end in sight. Its like watching a dog chase its tail, going in circles, going nowhere, now there are some who feel that there is nothing wrong with seeing a film being remade. Just because of a films age it needs some kind of tweeking, to be dusted off and polished.
However, when you take anothers vision and put your own spin on it, your not adding or enhancing...your deminishing the overall scheme of things. I see film as an important form of artistic communication, and when you're just trying to recpature someone elses glory, your not paying homage to anything.
Remember, Sam Raimi has stated that Romeros 'living dead' was a big influence on his 'Evil Dead'! Hence a homage, not a remake!
Romero and his crew had more then legitimate resons as to why he remade NOTLD in 1990, which was purely a business decision to recoup the loss they had faced on thier first foray into the business of filmmaking. For George it was a learning on your feet experience...thanks to the now defunct Walter Reade Company!
I saw "Black Christmas" upon its initial release way back in 1974 and it really scared the shit out this 14 year old kid! This was one of those rare films that stayed with me days after seeing it, that is a true testament to the impact of this type of genre film.
It was the experience of seeing a horror film like this for the very 1st time that really gets you! Black Christmas pre-dated Carpenters 'Halloween', making this a very important entry in the genre that resonates in its audience, Black Christmas is without a doubt an undeniable milestone in the history of horror films. Bob Clark created a film that has set a standard, raising the bar in terms of creating an unsetteling atmosphere. The overall creepy tone set from the opening moments, this film wasted no time in scaring its audience. That unforgettable 1st 'phone call' is some truly scary assed fucked up shit! THIS film IS a CLASSIC in every sense of the word.
Plus we get an UNFORGETTABLE ending unlike any seen in a genre film, a remake is not just flat out pointless, but completely unwarrented!

I'm for remakes. I appreciate film as an artform, but it's basically there to entertain, and films never really . . . well I don't connect with them on any extremely deep level. So then I wondered if some hot new upstart author rewrote king's IT, which is my favorite book, and connect with it very deeply, I wouldn't be pissed, but, thinking of things that way helps me understand the hardcore genre fans. This is so obvious I should've gotten it awhile back, but what the hell, I get there eventually.
Now the worst thing about all this, is there are remakes that have nothing to do with the original, and could've been called by a completely different name, which would be better. Right? It's not like mainstream knows what the hell black christmas is, if it was called something else, no one would notice. . . except genrre fans. I think you guys are hurting this by making such a commotion that it catches the attention of everyone else. In that way, speaking financially, what catches more eyes: lighting a match or starting a bonfire? I wonder if angry genre fans are actually helping these remakes.

We're not helping and we're not hurting. Reason being, no one is listening to us. I could sit here and write a 2,000-word essay on why Black Christmas shouldn't be revamped, but it would be moot. The only way to hurt a remake is by not seeing it, and I know for a fact that almost every schmoe in attendance will end up watching it out of curiosity.

Not this schmoe. I love the original way too much to see whatever flavors of the month they get from the WB to play the frightened sorority girls, or what rappers they'll get to play the cops and the drunken lush housemother.

You sure no one is listening? I might be wrong, but didn't, what, aintitcool.com, at one time or another, get wind of some awesome new flick, promote the hell out of it, and it got a lot of attention upon release? Now that was probably good attention, given, but, this isn't just, say, arrowinthehead making a hubub. It's the internet community. Honestly, if there were no internet, would that amityville remake be as high profile as it is (it is high profile, right?)? And the internet is full of raging fans.

If history has taught us anything, it's that negative feelings are conveniently tuned out, while positive response is glorified, printed on the movie's DVD box, and brought up in ass-kissing interviews with the writer/director/producer/etc.
Money talks and bullshit walks.

The Amityville Horror didn't get its buzz from the Internet. It's a recognizable name, it has a recognizable lead, and it will appeal to teenagers who don't visit sites like these. If "they" were listening to us, most of these remakes wouldn't be happening.
C-Desecration-
04-03-2005, 07:23 PM
I mean the public listening, not "they". Unless they are the public. And then, sometimes buzz doesn't do anything. Look at alone in the dark. Everyone said it was going to be awful, buzzed about it. . . and the movie tanked.
I suppose this just has to do with a big marketing push behind the movies than anything. Of course it does.
Still though, what has happened is damned ingenious even if remakes are vile. They have somehow managed to make every one feel like an "event" of a film. And so far, the public isn't tired of it.

I was watching sci fi the other day and saw a movie, made in the 80s, where when it started a woman killed her husband on christmas eve while he sat on the couch. Then she dragged him out to the well in the backyard (after talking to a conspirator on the phone) and is attacked by a man escaped from a mental home dressed up like santa claus. Is that Black Christmas? Just wondering. There are so many christmas slashers and this one sucked, so I hope this was something else.

Nope! Sorry SteeleDude, That was an episode from the now defuncted HBO series "Tales From The Crypt" in 1989, the story is actually re-telling of a segment called "All Through The House" which appeared in the original film 'Tales From The Crypt' (1972) :D
Plot Summary:
"Black Christmas"
It's time for Christmas break, and the sorority sisters make plans for the holiday, Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder star among an ill-fated houseful of sorority sisters when obscene phone calls break the serenity and it becomes clear that a psychopath is stalking the house. Dont MISS it!

I SO wanted to bone Olivia Hussey when I saw her in Romeo & Juliet (I'm aware she was 15, but relax - I was 16 ;)).
After watching Black Christmas a short while ago, I realized how little things had changed.

Wow, I can't believe you figured out what I was talking about!! Awesome. Black Christmas actually sounds good, I'll see if I can find it when I get home. I have a video store nearby that carries all kinds of old horror movies, such as Phantasm 2 "the Stuff" and "Spookies" so maybe they'll have this classic too. (Not that Stuff and Spookies are classic)

Yay... another remake......:( . Seriously, this just makes me angry whenever I think about it. Remakes show a total lack of creativity and drive in my opinion. It's like we have a bunch of Hollywood execs sitting in an office with a dartboard, full of classic horror films, and whatever movie title the dart hits is what will be made into some lame WB, shitfest remake.
My main problem isn't the fact that there are remakes... it's going to happen whether I like it or not. I just don't like the fact that studios and filmmakers see remakes as nothing more than a simple copout for money, which basically means they could give a shit about the quality of the remake and they could give a shit about the original.

Oh man , Olivia Hussey , now there is a babe to die for . I know exactly what you mean , i had a mini obsession with her when i saw Romeo and then it only intensified with Black Christmas . She even still looked pretty damn hot in one of those psycho movies , but she was at her best in BC , i really can't see any current actresses eclipsing or even matching her perf in a remake , it's simply one of the most well rounded , effective , realistic , emotionally resonating performances in any horror film .
I can't stop them from making it , and i'll watch it if they do , you never know it could actually be good if the right director gets a hold of it , someone with a genuine reverence for the original and a love for those thrillers from that time period .
The damn thing is still bone chilling , simplistic , but unsettling like no other film before or after . The ending is unreal , i didn't think you could make something so terrifying without loud music , or cgi , or any of the other artifices used in modern horror .

Curiosity hits you when you read a tread like this, so i looked around and finally saw the movie last friday...
Verdict. 8.9 (10)
This film was really great to watch when I saw it. I was expecting more of a "Halloween" type film, except the fact that the always brilliant Margot Kidder was in it. So I was into it from the start. The film follows a sorority house on the days proceeding Christmas when a psycho stalker starts getting into the house and, quite frankly, under the girls skin. Then the murders begin. The
setting has been seen before, and so have the P.O.V. shots, but who cares?
This film was scary anyway.
Olivia Hussey is terrific and tense as the lead sorority sister, Jesse, who has the burden of dealing with all the other sisters' crisis problems. She looked really great too! And in the finale, she really played her role out for all it was worth.
Kier Dullea was descent. A little too humble for the role, and not as, well,
intimidating as he could have been. His scenes here are played out like a play. if not Broadway style, more conservative.
Margot Kidder, being as good as she is, was not surprisingly fabulous! Her
character was the rough tough stuff sister who drinks, swears, and is the only one of them who has the guts to show off some glitz.
The rest of the cast does just fine, particularly Andrea Martin as the soft spoken sister, John Saxon as the police chief who only wants to find the answer, and the actress who played Mrs. Mac was certainly worth the view too!
Writing wise this film was greatly and adroitly planned. The central theme of this film is that you can't trust anyone, friend or foe, and the scares are genuine, and come psychologically, instead of in your face like "Halloween" or "Friday the 13th." Bob Clark is in love with his actors as he photographs them in bright
exuberant colors, while his killer is photographed in jaundiced, grainy colors.
All in all, a very artistic film and very creepy to the bone. Great atmospheric music too!
FUCK the remake!!!!:D
