British actor Daniel Craig picked as new James Bond

LONDON (AFP) - The producers of the hugely successful James Bond film franchise have chosen British actor Daniel Craig to take over the role of the suave super-spy, a report said.

The 37-year-old has been offered a three-film deal by Bond producer Barbara Broccoli and is expected to sign up formally in the next few weeks, The Sun newspaper reported Wednesday.

Craig, a tough-looking character actor who has mixed up appearances in many art-house titles with roles in blockbusters such as "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider", just beat fellow Briton Clive Owen for the role, the report said.

Craig would be the sixth Bond in the official series of films based on the novels by Ian Fleming, following Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and most recent incumbent Pierce Brosnan.

According to The Sun, Owen -- nominated for an Oscar this year for film "Closer" -- had told casting agents he did not want the job, although Broccoli was already favouring Craig.

While Craig remains relatively unknown outside Britain, he is well respected as an actor and also has the necessary reputation for being something of a Bond-esque ladies man, having recently dated supermodel Kate Moss.

Citing an unnamed "movie source", The Sun said that staff working at Eon Productions, which makes the Bond movies, had been told Craig would star in the next films.

"Daniel is the new 007. He is going through the deal with his lawyers. It's a big commitment for a minimum of 10 years, but he has indicated he will take the job," the source said.

Brosnan's last film as Bond was "Die Another Day" in 2002. Since then a string of possible replacements have been mooted, including Britons Jude Law and Ewan McGregor and Australian actors Hugh Jackman and Eric Bana.

Fleming's novels chronicling the adventures of the British spy codenamed 007 were first turned into a film in 1962, with "Dr No".

I'm going to keep this open, as the new Bond deserves his own thread, I think. Post pics here if you can find 'em...

Personally I'm not sure if he's the right choice for Bond, he looks alot different from previous ones. I know MGM want a more grundgey look for Bond this time (urghh) and I suppose Craig fits that. Saying that I can thing of some worse people to play 007 and thank God that rumor about the next Bond being black was false (for those who don't know, rumors were going around a few months back that Colin Salmon, who appeared in the Brosen Bond movies would take over the role).

IMO not a bad choice at all. Well, apart from the fact that his fair isn't black. Jude Law would have been better though.

I posted this in the official thread as well, but go the the trailers section and check out the new trailer for Layer Cake. Craig narrates throughout and has a blink and you will miss it classic Bond pose.

Like everyone said in that other thread in UPCOMING (maybe it should be merged into this one), this looks like a simple rumor. Craig's something of a hot item with LAYER CAKE coming out and getting some recognition in the UK, I think, and the Broccolis probably had (or might still have him) on their short list, but he's not been cast as Bond, he's gone on record to say he hadn't been offered the part and hence couldn't have accepted it, and the Broccolis themselves had no comment.

I'm willing to believe is on the shortlist that includes Clive Owen, Julian McMahon, Hugh Jackman and maybe that Orlando Bloom as a young Bond option, but I don't think he's signed on yet. I hope not. He doesn't hold a candle up to Owen, in my opinion.

I'd prefer Clive Owen but Craig is also a good choice in my book.

I don't know what to believe, since I had read that Gerard Butler was in consideration.
I was hoping he'd get the part.
Whatever, I'm a Bond fan.

I think Daniel Craig is a good choice for Bond, certainly different different, rugged good looks. Clive Owen and Jude Law are good options to, though i think Jude looks a little too young. When Pierce left the project, i actually thought either Jason Isaacs or Ralph Fiennes would be good choices.

i really dont think he'll fit in the role of Bond, still i think they should have killed the series a long time ago
