View Full Version : Parts of Songs that give you *chills*...

1) Weezer- Only In Dreams

My favorite song of all time, this song is basically musical orgasm for me from beggining to end. The song is 8 minutes of pure everything I could want in song, but the main part that just gives me the musical chill beyond any other musical chill is at exactly 6:44 into the song when the double drum kick comes out and BOOM this explosion of climaxing guitars, bass, drums, and everything just falls into place into this sound that is too beautiful for words. Every time this musical explosion invades my ears my body goes into this full chill and I always question how something so PERFECT was put together. The buildup, the blowout, and the guitars and everything from 6:44 on craft this song into utter perfection and by far my favorite song of all time.

2) Weezer-"Across The Sea"

The song itself doesn't necessarily count as chill inducing, as amazing as it is, the most joyous and awesome part of the song comes when Rivers unleashes a lyrically and vocally high bomb on me as he shreeks "words and dreams and a million screams, oh, how I need a hand in mine to feel.." This one is hard to describe but the voice Rivers sings this with is too awesome to describe. You just gotta go and listen to it if you ask me.

3) My Chemical Romance- "Demolition Lovers"

The final track on their first CD this six minute anthem to dying with a lover in some serious gunfire makes my ears rejoice in excitment everytime I hear it. The main parts that get me are the eerily perfectly sung first words "hand in mine, into your icy blues.." and the final words "I mean this forever..". The song is a perfect up up up, down down down kind of song and it's extremely well put together and written. Definitly ranking on my favorite songs ever, this is another hard one to describe, so I won't really try.

4) Weezer- "I Just Threw Out The Love of My Dreams"

A rare B-Side, Rachel Hayden lends her vocals to the song while Weezer jams out on the instruments. Her voice perfectly fits the song from beggining to end and during the break it begins: "oh he's got me wondering.." And pretty soon, as the buildup blows out, her and Rivers HIT THE EXACT NOTE TOGETHER:

"He's in my eyes, he's in my ears, he is in my blood, he is in my tears...I must be made of steel, for I just threw out the love of my dreams."

The words between Rivers and Rachel hit together so dynamically, so well, so on time and exact with the instruments, I can never help but freeze up and get a smooth chill everytime I hear it.

5) Billy Joel- "The Stranger"

The whistle at the beggining and at the end. ::shivers::

Lost Someone ~ James Brown f(The version off of live at the apollo)
Kentcuky Avenue ~ Tom Waits
Girls from the Streets ~ Scott Walker

Most Recently:
Cripple And The Starfish ~ Antony and the johnsons. I must have had this song on repeat play for at least two days while driving around. The chorus makes the hairs on my arm stand on end.

Lament by Ultravox.

There's part in My Sundown by Jimmy Eat World that gives me chills: The line where he says "with one hand high" - for some reason the way his voice sounds when he says "high" makes me shiver... but I don't know why...

The Mars Volta - Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus

After the long instrumental in the middle and then the vocals start up again, you aren't really expecting it and it sounds so damned good.

When Nico sings this verse from Femme Fatale:

Here she comes, you better watch your step
She’s going to break your heart in two, it’s true
It’s not hard to realize
Just look into her false colored eyes
She builds you up to just put you down, what a clown

Everytime I here Tool's Pushit, the opening chords and Maynard's ultra-high voice, the goosebumps rise up.

Just an awsome track from an awesome album.

That's a beautiful song...it gives me the shivers too.

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart - The synths.

Joy Division - Disorder - The intro...ooh.

Pulp - Last Day Of The Miners Strikes - "C'MON LETS GET IT ON...!"

Pulp - Babies - "I only went with her coz she looks like YOU. MY GOD!

Stevie Wonder - I Don't Know Why (I Love You) - The whole song, from the heavy opening bars to the screechy finale.

The White Stripes - There's No Home For You Here - The HUGE tuneless "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, there's no home for you here girl go away, there's no home for you here!", that never fails to give me the chills.

Flying Burrito Brothers - Hot Burrito I - Just Gram's voice quavering throughout makes me feel all tingly.

Antony & The Johnsons - Hope There's Someone - The piano crescendo.

There are lots more.

Today I just heard "Farewell/Goodbye" by M83 while at work

The song made me stop what I was doing and almost brought me to tears. i mean, no way would I cry. That's for sissies!

But for real, can't remember last time a song froze me like that. Quite powerful, and slightly familiar to Merc. Rev in his "mature" phase

Genesis - The Musical Box

"And I want...and I feel...and I know...and I touch...the WALLLLLL" and the ending.

Genesis - Supper's Ready

The short guitar solo in the "Ikhnaton and Itsacon and Their Band of Merry Men" segment, and the entire "Apocalypse in 9/8" segment.

The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again

The scream.

Peter Gabriel - Intruder

The whistling at the end, followed by Gabriel singing "I am the intruder."

Genesis - Riding the Scree (Live, from the Genesis Archive Boxed Set [I think])

Phil Collins' drumming near the end.

I'm sure there are more...

I've sung along to this song countless times. It's even better when Paul Banks is singing it live. And you're mere feet away from him.

To me, this song is when the band transcends their New York indie-rock sensibilities to somehow channel Joy Division. Somewhere in music legend heaven, Ian Curtis is smiling. Or frowning, because, it's not exactly apropos to smile during the song.

I'm trying to think of a part of Common People that gives me chills, but nowadays Mr. Cocker's voice on the whole thing is pretty shiver-inducing.

Look, if you wanted me to fellate you, you could've just asked. I'm easy like that.

I got chills typing up this reply. I've already posted in another topic about how depressing this song can be to me, but it's such a great song. The buildup is so epic that it pretty much is a musical climax when it finally hits.

oh god the "Words and dreams and a million screams" part is amazing.

I'VE GOT YOUR LETTER

you've got my song...

Meh, the female vocals always turned me off, but my favorite Weezer B-Side has got to be "You Gave Your Love To Me Softly" just because of the awesome line:

Still your bijon lingers on and on AND ON

Yeah, that's the best B-Side, but the best Weezer song no one's heard is the song "Wanda", which is only a demo:

Wanda, you're my only friend...

Wha...?

Are you dissing my man fool? Or am I just not down with it?

The bits that get me all a-quiver during Common People are...

Watchin' (DER-RER-RER*)
Roa-ches, climb the wall...
IF-YOU-CALLED-YOUR-DAD-HE-COULD-STOP-IT-ALL-YEAH!

Never live like Common People...

And,

Wanna live with the common people like you-oooh, la-la-la-la...
You-oooh, la-la-la-la...
You-oooh, la-la-la-la...
You-oooh, la-la-la-la-lala
Oh Yeah

A most triumphant live track. There's always a real sense of euphoria about the place when Jarv' belts this old faithful out.

Yeah, that does it for me, too. Also, I'll add that a lot of Joy Division songs (Transmission and Disorder, in particular) do it for me, as well as those parts of the song Bitches Brew by Miles Davis where he does these really high, echoing trumpet notes, which basically come out of nowhere at parts where the only thing playing was bass.

Pantera - cowboys from hell (The guitar solo ALWAYS gets my blood flowing and my heart pounding)
Tool - Aenima (....Most of the song)

Down - Ghosts along the mississippi ( The guitar solo )
A perfect circle - The hollow/Blue/Juidth/ Three libras/ Imagine (Yes! Imagine! You heard me right!!!) ( They all give me chills the whole time)
The doors - The end ( The last part, where basically, everything is out of control, drums beating, piano is blazing, just amazing)
Pantera - Hollow (When it goes from sad and depressing slow music, to anrgy and pissed off loud music, took my by suprise)
Alice in chains - Would (The live.acoustic version, just awesome)
