Fair enough, as expected. I know Lucas wanted to make it dark, but he's not stupid (or bold) enough to make an R-rated conclusion and shun all those toy-buying little children from the theater.

PG-13 is good, but I consider what led to that decision by the MPAA, as The Empire Strikes Back was PG as the rest of the films, too, and it balanced the "cheesiness" (fantasy) and the "darkness" out quite well. The rating method has blurred over the years, yes, but I just wonder how much darker you can go from 'Empire Strikes' without underlining too much of the already heavy themes.
By the way, are you implying that an R rated Star Wars film would be something you'd like to see?

I think an R-rated Star Wars film would be too jarring a change in tone for me. *pictures blood splattering onto Artoo's dome* But I'm glad to see it's different enough from Eps 1 and 2 to warrant a PG-13.

I'm curious, yeah. And I'm talking a light R, not horror film R.
There's a definite risk it'd feel out of place because none of the other films has been. But this is a movie that shows the VIOLENT downfall of a VIOLENT young man through VIOLENT deeds and the DESTRUCTION of those he loves and the society he lived in.
I'm just saying, the strength of it possibly could've been shown in a much more powerful manner had it been rougher and R-worthy. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe the PG-13 is fine. But I tend to think that a movie depicting the Rise of Evil and fall of a Republic, through a decade-long war, personal duels and the slaughter of dozens of Jedi, including younglings, getting only a PG-13 rating could mean it's shying away from some of its potentially most powerful and stomach-shaking moments.

The Empire Strikes Back is only PG because it was definetely not harsh enough for an R.
PG-13 didn't exist until Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom four years later.

PG-13 is the new PG.
PG-13 films today are equivilent to PG a few years ago. Very few, and very tame films get the PG. And only the pre-school fare gets the G.
If PG-13 had existed back then, most of the OT would have been PG-13 too. Films that used to get G now get PG, and those that were PG are now PG-13. Only the hardest get an R.
Like the previous poster said, they weren't hard enough for an R, so they were PG.
So what does this mean? Is Ep. III going to be better because it's PG-13? No, it's just a rating. I'm just glad George didn't really fight for the PG. He seemed comfortable that this would be the darkest film, and I'm glad he didn't try to change that vision just for some dumb rating by the MPAA, that usually rate films inconsistantly anyway.

Then again, it'd probably get a PG released today, but what the hell.

I coulda swore that Red Dawn was the first PG-13 rating. Because Temple of Doom is rated PG. Or are you saying that it's because of Temple of Doom that there is a PG-13 rating. Because I've heard that before too.

You're right. Red Dawn was the first, but rumor has it that Spielberg influenced the PG-13 rating by suggesting Temple of Doom to get a rating that wasn't quite R, but it was too strong for PG.

Well, you missed the point, if I may say so. In my opinion MPAA has been "chilling out" with ratings ever since then, so I was hypothetically comparing, if possible, what kind of reasoning was behind here, since The Empire wouldn't get PG-13 today, I think. And as for it being PG because "it was definetely not harsh enough for an R" (sic), isn't that obvious considering PG-13 didn't exist back then?

Pg-13 eh, well, i hope it has a LORD OF THE RINGS type violence feel to it, maybe a beheading or 3?

I still think the theatres will be crawling with ankle biters.

Spilling of colorful alien blood? Or is that PG material?

Exactly my point. And 2001 wasn't exactly released recently either.

What the hell? I can almost say for certain there's going to be nothing in ROTS that we havn't seen already (we've already had charred corpses, spilling alien intestines, severed body parts and "force choke", what more can there be?)
Well it will probabpy get a PG over here in the UK becuase since they changed the rating guidelines in 2001 Fellowship of the Ring got a PG and Terminator 3 got a 12A (equivalent to PG-13).
In fact all of the Star Wars films have got a U rating over here (equivalent to G) apart from AOTC with got a PG. Since I doubt ROTS is going to be as brutal as Fellowship of the Ring, it'll probably get a PG. Unless there are headbutts. ;)
Really though, the only reason for this PG-13 rating is we are now (sadly) living in the 'think of the children' era when people exposing children to anything even remotely violent will turn them into serial killers. This would have easily got a PG several years back.

In case you haven't seen the film already that is a bold statement to make.
