It was only a matter of time that I would make a thread devoted to the most brilliant person working in music. You've heard his music. He did the scores for Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and last years I Heart Huckabees. His ESOTSM theme is the most beautiful peice of music I've ever heard. He is also a producer for such artists as Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, and the late Elliott Smith. Whats great is on each of his soundtracks, he has at leaste two original songs. And he has an amazing voice, so it makes you want more. He has a solo album that can only be found on his web site, its called Meaningless. I suggest you check it out, it's some of the best pop songs I've ever heard. Does anyone else have much love for this man?

Personally, I think he's a genius. He's easily my favorite current film score composer (right above Thomas Newman, Joe Hisaishi, and Danny Elfman) and when I found out he had worked with Elliott Smith, it just made him more brilliant in my eyes.

HUCKABEES is, from what i hear, earlier material that he had written that he changed around and tweaked to become the I Heart Huckabees score. I'm personally surprised that it got a few negative reviews. Personally, I think the music complements the movie's whimsical feel perfectly. Omni is my favorite cue on here - it's a gorgeous piano rendition of one of the main themes in the film that I believe was used near the end when Jason Schwartzman runs into the building after Jude Law's character. Or it could be the scene with Tommy/Caterina/Albert in the car. In any case, I love this cue. Other great cues on here are Cubes, Monday (End Credits), and Didn't Think It Would Turn Out Bad (String Quartet Version)

ETERNAL SUNSHINE is easily my favorite score from last year. It's quirky and totally different with cues like Drive In and Showtime, but he has just as many beautiful and poignant pieces - notably the short Elephant Parade, Row, Phone Call, and Peer Pressure. The Main Title is gorgeous and Theme is a great piano piece. It's pretty much a perfect score imo.

PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE is also an incredible score though I unfortunately don't have the soundtrack. But it was the most memorable thing about that movie for me.

MAGNOLIA - Overall a great orchestral score - A Little Library Music/Going to a Show is one of my favorite cues on here though they're all good. This cue already shows off a somewhat quirky feel that comes out more with his later scores. But this epic orchestral feel is really perfect for such an epic film.

His pop songs are great too. But I really think he blows most other composers out of the water in film scoring.

Oh and anyone who likes his stuff, check out the Largo site. They have some of the live improv piano songs he does on stage that you can hear and some of them are incredible.

Just yesterday, I downloaded the soundtracks of I Heart Huckabees and Punch Drunk Love (I already own the Eternal Sunshine and Magnolia CDs) and they're all astounding. Some of the best soundtracks of recent years.

Where should I go from here? I don't know much of his non-movie work.
