A great little film. Great performances by Hutton and Nat Portman, especially, though everyone is stand-out. Perfect used of supporting cast, witty script. Reflective and sensitive, I loved every minute of it.

My review is old, but the film is one of my favorites of all-time. I watch it about 3-4 times every year, particularly on those lonely winter nights. Great stuff, all around. "Classic birdman".

I too love this film, discovered it for myself early last year and have watched it a few times, nice little character driven film. Always a rewarding experience when i see it.

Saw it last night and was really disappointed.

There was no depth to the majority of the characters - they were all a bunch of whining, immature small-town losers (David Arquette and that guy who kept his hat on the whole time had stupid looks on their faces the whole time), the dialogue was really weak ("Face, a good 7 and a half, body... a good 7 and a half and personality... a good 7 and a half!" ), the so-called "cool" moments seemed totally staged (like the part when they're singing the Neil Diamond song). Rosie O' Donnell's big scene where she's bitching about Penthouse models really wasn't that inspired, and Michael Rapaport's beauitful girl monologue was simply pathetic and inane, his whole delivery was poor and the way they zoomed in on the model pictures, I couldn't believe what I was seeing (not to mention his awful performance throughout the rest of the movie). And the music was really pedestrian - the song during the opening sequence seemed lifted out of some amateur Open Mic act.

I will say something good about it though, which was Natalie Portman: all the scenes with her and Timothy Hutton were great, her intelligence and maturity at her young age really shined through. And I guess Hutton and Uma Thurman held their own compared to many of the other players, but overall this movie just blew.

You're right, I guess. But I still love this flick. I've seen it many times. There is one thing that bothers me. The scene when Dalton's character goes to see Matt Dillon in the hospital and Mira Sorvino is asleep, face down next to him. I don't like that she wakes up right as he's leaving. She should have been asleep on a chair or something. No biggie.

Alrato!

I didn't turn it off when Rosie was on the screen, so it's a really good movie.

I really, really, really liked this flick. I don't think it gets enough credit. All of the performances (yes, even Rosie) are great, and Natalie Portman is truly pretty astounding.

My opinion is the complete oposite of yours. I loved everthing about this flick except the Portman, Hutton scenes...

Whoa, that's interesting. Why?
