sorry if this is in the wrong forum but i wasn't sure where it goes.
i just boaght the transformers the movie on tape (actually it was a gift from a friend, i would havegotten the dvd) and i noteced that this version is totally different from the one i remember
instead of the theme song and credits ing the begining, they cut the song and have a star wars ripped off scroll, and a voice reading it
they cut out bumblebee saying "shit"
the end has the voice ruining the later series by announcing that optimus prime will indeed come back.
there might have been other changes but i didn't catch them
what the hell? why was this done? it really detracts from the movie, and i found it kind of annoying. does anyone know where and if i can still get the original version of the movie?

I don't know the answers to your questions. But I do know that I noticed the changes too and it pissed me off to no end.

Dude that sucks. I'm not sure where you are but if you have an U.K. version (mine is the U.S. version) like kamisama suggests, then you may have to look to see if you can find an international version of it.
Is the dialogue, "Open Dammit! Open!" where Ultra-Magnus is trying to open the matrix still there?
That "Oh Shit! What are we gonna do now?" is classic. I think my jaw dropped when he said that the first time I heard it. I was actually under the assumption that Spike actually said that dialogue and not Bumblebee. Aparently all of the Transformers have foul mouths...:D

The video is just the edited version that, I think, Rhino released in the 90s. There are just two versions - the cut and uncut. There are plenty of cpoies out there, you just have to be sure to get the "American" version -- I'm not sure why they call it the American version as the "Internation" version and the correct one were both released in The States. Maybe it just refers to the theatrical release?
If Im not mistaken, the cut version also has a bunch of stuff missing from when the Decepticons attack the ship at the start. Some of the killings were much less brutal, if I remember correctly. The "american" one is pretty cold-blooded, and also a couple songs are different.
Here's a link to the one you want and should have. Send that copy you have to the junk planet!

All DVDs seem to contain the correct "american" cut.

I know the first copy of Transformers was in VHS and I had to get it shipped from Canada (through the internet) because the movie was no where to be found in the stores at the time. This was back in early 90's though. That's probably not considered "International", but it was outside the states non-the-less. It was un-edited like the U.S. DVD release.

Yeah, they wouldn't put it out for a long time for some reason. it wasn't as long as ET, but it was still a LLLLOONNNG time. Did they ever actually put it out in the 80s? I never saw it 'till the 90s, adn this was around 1991 I found it at a rental store. I took it home, and sure enough it was not what I remembered from seeing it years back in the theater. Where was the robot cussing? Years later, I went online and saw there was a cut and uncut version out there (this was maybe around 98) and I started lookign around. I found the uncut one for sale on line and got it. Later, I got a DVD player, and that one was also uncut. It wasn't until just now that I ever saw the American/International thing -- this is also how Amazon refers to it.
So, I'm not sure why Amazon would call the unedited one the American version unless they are only refering to the theatrical release, because no doubt - the cut one could be bought at the states (You may have just not been able to get it in your region. I was in Florida when I found mine.) Even back in 1998, I'd never heard of American/International - everywhere refered to it as cut and uncut. It's because of this that I think the region might refer to the theatrical release: North America getting the American, uncut version, and elsewhere getting the International version.
Are there any non-American schmoes that saw this in the theaters? What's the deal?

I got the same edited one you're talking about. Good ol Rhino video. The edits are pretty inexplicable - the opening / closing credits I mean. The only thing I can possibly imagine is that they thought they were selling a movie to a whole generation of kids who knew nothing of Transformers, hence, the text scroll.
The rest of the video was pretty much the same way it's been since it's first video release way back in '86, or '87. Around when Top Gun was out, I remember that. It was availible on video, but just priced for rental. I remember we had to go to three different video stores to find a copy (which we promptly dubbed and I wore out the tape on repeat viewings). The "shit" line was cut out then as well. I'm pretty sure everything else is the same.
The DVD is the same "uncut" version released in theaters (I was there, and I remember my jaw dropping at the sound of Transformers cussing).

I don't think so. I had (still do) the sountrack to the movie but for some reason the only way I could see the movie was if they rebroadcast the movie (in sections) during the regular TV show during the 3rd or 4th season. Naturally you weren't going to hear Bumblebee say, 'shit' on national television.
***Possible spoilers below***
I was surprised and still am about the fact that the movie came out as a PG rating. It was supposed to be geared towards children, but seemed to try and make an attempt to grab older kids/adults as well. The scenes with the Decepticons on the autobot ship where pretty violent. The one autobot that had the smoke coming out of the eyes and mouth always sticks in the back of my mind.

So, you all were saying that it WAS available for rental around 87?
That's crazy, because I know I would have gotten it. I think I might know what's going on though -- When I saw it, in my area theater -- there was no one in the theater except me and my friend, and this was during the first week it was out. So maybe there was no demand in my area, so rentals stores didn't stock it, and since it was priced for rental, no stores had it.
When I saw it in '91, I had moved to another city - so, in my mind, it just came out, but really, I just found it.
That's funny because all of those years I bitched about the TF movie not being out - it was out there somewhere.
Well, do you guys know what I'm talking about with the Autobot ship -- that scene being shorter in the cut version. Am I messed up on this too, because I swear there's more changes than just the cussing and the credits. It really seems like there's different music used in some parts too, but it's been awhile since I've seen the "international" one.

I don't know. I'd seen it countless times on video (edited version), but I don't remember seeing anything new besides "Oh shit" when I watched the DVD. And I'm pretty good at spotting things like that. If there is a difference, it must be tiny.

Nah, I'm pretty sure they cut out the scene where they drag Bumblebee into a backroom, strip all the paint off him using gasoline then set him on fire.
;)
Yeah, regardless - I never want to see the edited one again.
