Which 10 films would you show to Aliens? My choices:
The Day the Earth Stood Still(to show we've learnt the error of our ways)
Citizen Kane(The international critics' #1 might impress them,as a demonstration of earth's artistic achievement)
Sunrise(cos it's a wonderful silent)
The Sound of Music(they may like singalong Alpine musicals)
A Day in the Country(a lovely, lyrical short film,in case they're not keen on feature length)
2001:A Space Odyssey
Dr Strangelove(to show earthling madness)
Sansho the Bailiff(cos it's my favourite. They may also have impeccable taste)
Duck Soup(a mad comedy might be their thing)
Seven Samurai(Longer action/adventure may appeal)
Others; The Colour of Pomegranates,Celine and Julie go Boating(both unusual),Ai No Corrida(this thing called sex is what humans like doing?),Dumbo(animation, and with animals).

I don't think i'd show Mars Attacks or Independence Day.

Great topic!

I'd show them the flip side of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY...Mel Brooks' HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART 1!

I would not show them the old "Twilight Zone" episode titled "To Serve Man"! Anyone remember that one?

This is a terrific topic. I'd show them:
"2001: A Space Odyssey"
"A.I. Artificial Intelligence"
"Close Encounters of the Third Kind"
"E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial"
"The Last Temptation of Christ"
"Kundun"
"Fantasia" & "Fantasia/2000"
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"
"King of the Hill"
"Apollo 13"
"The Sweet Hereafter"
"Toy Story" & "Toy Story 2"
"Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie" (Don't ask why; just to have something fun and funny I guess.)

Wait, wait, wait! There's something you left out? What kind of aliens are we talking about? I'm not expecting a comprehensive look at their culture and history, but it would help if we had a better idea what they're like!

I'm not too sure what they'd be like, but i wouldn't hang around showing favourite films to a creature like in Alien/Aliens or similar monstrosities.Nor to some blob it would be difficult to make meaningful contact with.Nor if they'd come to gleefully blast us,as in Mars Attacks(i'd be busy seeking out the appropriate music, though i did find those "little critters" quite endearing).I'm assuming a level of intelligence at least equal to ours and a genuine interest in our culture on their part,as well as possibly unusual taste. Also that they've "come in peace",but i wouldn't wish to risk upsetting them,to be on the safe side.Anyway, each person's selection of films will no doubt reflect what they expect the aliens to be like.Mosespa's reply has got me thinking they may have more than one head each, which should make for a more advanced viewing experience.

I'd definitely show them E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
