View Full Version : Faces of Death: The Movie?

From Dread Central...
AICN got an e-mail from a reader who had heard rumors that AngryFilms, run by producer Don Murphy, are looking into resurrecting the Faces of Death franchise in a very strange way. For those familiar with the old series, it was a series of three tapes (the 4th and 5th were knock-offs) in which a creepy doctor named Goss was obsessed with death in all it’s forms and simply had to film as much of it as he could. The deaths were supposedly real but quite obviously staged, and the films still have a bit of infamy about them to this day.
Well, Moriarty at AICN checked with Murphy himself and loe and behold, it’s all true. From the Murphy mouth; ”Yes, we're in the process of putting together a commercial horror film based on the videotapes FACES OF DEATH. Our model will be what they did with the new Chainsaw, only with an original plot, since the tapes didn't really have any. A young, sexy group of kids have to figure out why all these strange deaths are happening in their small town, and they link them back to the original tapes. We'll redo some of the sequences from the original - electrocutions, autopsies, on air suicide, alligators tearing folks apart - scary stuff. The long-term goal is also to create new franchise using the host of the original series who has never stopped killing. He's like the anti-Freddy, not chasing you and cracking wise - he clinically stares into your eyes and studies you as you beg for help and die."
I couldn't care less about the Faces of Death "films," but this is an original concept. It has boundless potential. I wonder what it will be called. Perhaps it will simply be dubbed "Faces of Death." Whatever the title, I'm intrigued.

Agreed-- at least it's an original concept.

Although strange, I love the idea. It will be one sick and twisted ride. Next Halloween's going to be bloody!!

I figured that this would garner interest. I hope that it doesn't turn out to be one of those projects that putrefies in development Hell for a number of years.

Hmmmm, could be an interesting premise - god knows we seem to be in need of one in our beloved genre! ;)
Having seen the first couple of FODs, I can confirm that they veer between the uncomfortable realism of accident scene footage, and the sheer unbelivablilty of the electric chair and gas chamber deaths - sure, they look fairy convincing, but to the trained horror movie FX eye, you can see through the gags very easily.
It'll be interesting to see what becomes of this idea......

Does sound like a good idea, but do they need to use the Faces Of Death name?
If it's such a good film surely they don't need to ride the coattails of a franchise made famous by controversy?

The FoD name is a gritty title that sinks in when you hear it. It would be a huge suprise, and dissapointment to me if they didn't use it.

I agree with you 100%. Without the Faces of Death name, this wouldn't interest me at all.

Shit, I'm gullible... And here I thought the Faces of Death movies were all real... What about movies like Shocking Asia? Where they eat people and shit like that?

From what I can tell, this film has nothing to do with the Faces of Death films, so they're using the unfairly name to grab the attention of people who wouldn't otherwise be interested in it.
You see what I mean?
To put it another way, if there was a generic teen slasher with a guy who watched Friday the 13th films and killed people based on them, and called the film something like "The Friday the 13th Killings", it might make a lot of people watch it based on the Friday the 13th name.
If the people making ths film had anything to do with the original Faces of Death films then they can do whatever they want with it, but if they didn't then I'm just against using a franchise name that's infamous with horror fans in an attempt to make a few extra bucks.

Well... sure.
There's nothing wrong with using a good name sometimes. If they're going to extract Dr. Goss aka Dr. Gross and turn him into a villain, and then combine that with the actual Faces of Death films, where they are a basis and strong point of the plot, I see no problem with using the name.
To me it's like doing a movie about 9-11 and calling it... "9-11" instead of something abstract and totally un-necessary like "The Day After Tomorrow" or perhaps shanking the title "The Day the Earth Stood Still"
There's no real need to go out of your way and be abstract in the title with a film like this.
I'm for originality and all that jazz, but I still would never pass up on a title like Faces of Death, and if they use that title I commend them on the great business decisoin.

That's why i love the idea. I love the idea of the Faces of Death tapes being the cause of many murders (if they include a scene where someone gets there head bashed in with hammers like the monkey in FOD 1-I will cream my pants) and Dr. Gross being the villian. I don't see it as a Money making scheme cause of the FOD name. I see it as a great horror idea they hopefully will be great to see on the screen. I agree with Dead walk, it's great business decision.

Yeah, this shouldn't be overanalyzed. It's just a cool concept with a bankable name. I have a feeling that this flick won't be high art, so expostulating the integrity of it all seems pointless.

Heard about this at AICN a while ago.
Frankly, I`m shocked that you guys all think this is such an "original" concept.
A group of "hot teens" get killed one-by-one, and their deaths mimic the "Faces Of Death" movies........
So, uh, basically it`s "Urban Legend".
Only instead of 'hot teens' getting killed in accordance with urban legends, they get killed in accordance to scenes from "Faces Of Death".
Get what I`m saying?
I don`t see what`s so 'original' about this.
They may as well call it "Urban Legend 3: Faces Of Death".
And the whole thing with Dr. Gross coming out of the movies? "The Ring".

Let's wait and see how they execute this. I somehow doubt that it will remind anyone of Urban Legend or The Ring. Slam Dunk Ernest maybe.

You know what, there was nothing wrong with Urban Legends either, until some douche wrote a horrible script that had a shitty director and a bunch of douche kidz bop alumni to star in it.
Some of these films are shitty, but their concepts have super-sweet potential. This is one of them. Faces of Death has the potential to really fuck with people's fears.
