I know this subject won't interest everyone.Any responses gratefully received.Anyway, here are some Eastern European classics.
POLAND:
The Double Life of Veronique
A Short Film about Love, and the rest of the Dekalog(Both the above by Kieslowski, and i'd highly recommend them)
Ashes and Diamonds(Wajda)
Knife in the Water(Polanski).Neither of the last 2 is a personal favourite,i must admit, but they're widely considered masterpieces.
HUNGARY:
Round Up(Jancso)
Angi Vera(Gabor)
Mephisto(Szabo)
Satantango(Tarr-i've not seen it,but understand it's a masterpiece,>5 hours long)
Love(Makk-not seen this either, though his Another Way is fine)
CZECH:
Closely Observed Trains(Menzel)
A Blonde in Love(Forman-director of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest)
Daisies(Chytilova)
Diamonds of the Night(Nemec)
The Shop on the High Street(Kadar)
Intimate Lighting(Passer)
Kolya(Sverak)
and for some unusual, surreal animation/live action mixes,Svankmajer films are well worth seeing.
SERBIA/BOSNIA/CROATIA/FORMER YOGOSLAVIA(this is messy!):
The Time of the Gypsies
Underground(both by Kusturica,i prefer the former)
W.R.Mysteries of the Organism(Makaveyev)
GREECE:
The Travelling Players
Ulysses' Gaze
Eternity and a Day(all by Angelopoulos,a master i admire greatly- but too slow for many tastes.)
BULGARIA and ROMANIA are intriguing myteries,i'm afraid. The Goat Horn,The Attached Balloon,The Unknown Soldier's Patent Leather Shoes, and the Romanian film Reconstruction are among the most admired.
I'll be very interested in opinions, other suggestions.
