Well, Thomas Newman is an amazing composer who has been nominated for the Best Original Score Oscar 4 times and has never won. I love his music, he's scored for such films as...
American Beauty (my favorite score, it's incredible)
Little Women (second fave)
The Shawshank Redemption
Erin Brockovich
Pay it Forward
He's a unique composer and I can always tell when he's scored a film by listening to the music.

I'm with The Other. "American Beauty" is the best score around, and Thomas Newman is an incredible composer, and you can always tell if its him.
I love the track "Any Other Name", its one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard.
"Requiem for a Dream" also has a very good dramatic score.

I like the track "A Rose" which is playing in the background when Lester dreams of Angela in the bed of roses on the ceiling. ON the DVD, it starts on chapter 5.

I knew the Other would mention American Beauty's score and he didn't let me down! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I agree though. An amazing score.

Am I really that predictable? LOL, I just can't get enough of that movie. I've LOVED it since the first time I saw it. Usually films work there way up after repeated viewings, but not American Beauty. I've seen it about 80 times now or something. I can pretty much say every word along with the characters. LOL, if I watch it with people they hate it. I'm pathetic I know. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Psycho
Vertigo
North by North West(and others for Hitchcock)
Citizen Kane
The Magnificent Ambersons(for Welles)
All that Money can Buy
Taxi Driver
Jason and the Argonauts
Many others..
Also Ennio Morricone:
A Fistful of Dollars
The Good the Bad and the Ugly
Once upon a Time in the West
Once upon a Time in America(perhaps his best-all for Sergio Leone)
The Untouchables
Days of Heaven
Cinema Paradiso
The Mission
and many others..
Both composers have made major contributions to cinema, hope you'll agree.

Ummm, aren't all scores meant to help portray drama and emotion? Sorry, but the title really seems redundant in terms of what a film score should be. It seems like you meant which scores were best at helping portraying drama.
Regardless, some of my major choices include:
"Braveheart," James Horner
"The Crow," Graeme Revell
"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," Tan Dun
"The Godfather," Nino Rota
"Vertigo," Bernard Herrmann
"Apocalypse Now," Carmine Coppola
"The Last Temptation of Christ," Peter Gabriel
"The Sweet Hereafter," Mychael Danna
"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," Howard Shore
"Eyes Wide Shut," Jocelyn Pook
