I decided that /4 *'s is how i like to do it... (the major majority of critics do it that way too)
here are others:
A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, F
(entertainment weekly)
1-5 stars (film threat)
1-10 (joblo's)
which is your favorite?

1/10 to 10/10 is my choice, I've "perfected" it over the last year or two. Especially from using the IMDb.com and that's their grading system.

I use 1/10 to 10/10 and I don't give 10s and 1s a lot, as a matter of fact I've only given 6 10's and no movie has been so bad that I gave it a 1... not even Spiceworld(2/10)
I've stopped rating movies. I find ratings hard to assign and often find I want to change them. If I do go back to it I'll use the 1-5 star system, it is the one I am most familliar with because all the UK film magazines use it.

I'm equally happy with 1-10,and 1-5(with 1/2 points in between,like the Virgin Film Guide system).A guy at our local film society made the error of asking for audience feedback scores,with 1 as excellent,5 as awful;we were too late to change the sheets and it caused a lot of confusion.I don't like the letter system.My first film guide was Leonard Maltin,so am also comfortable with 1/2 points up to ****.

I use the /10 grading system. It's the one I feel most comfortable with, although I don't like grading movies a lot.

I use the A+-F grading system personally, but have worked on adapting those grades into the /10 and 4-star systems as well. It works pretty well. I've given as many as 18 A+s to films in a single year (though few translate to pure 10/10s), but usually give very few Fs.

I use the /10 for my grading system.

HERE IS HOW I WOULD TRANSLATE LETTER GRADES TO THE OUT OF TEN RATING SYSTEM:
10 A+
9 A-, A
8 B+, A-
7 B, B-
6 B-, C+
5 C
4 C-
3 D+
2 D-
1 D
0 F
AND HERE IS HOW I'D TRANSLATE THE OUT OF FOUR STARS TO LETTER GRADES...THEN TO /10
4 A, A+ / USUALLY 10/10
3.5 A- / 9/10
3 B+, B 8/10 OR A 7/10
2.5 B-, C+ / 7/10 TO A 6/10
2 C, C- / 5/10
1.5 C-, D+ /4/10 TO A 3/10
1 D / 2/10
.5 D- 1/10
0 F 0/10

I use the 1/10-10/10 scale originally because it was the one at IMDb. Now I'm just used to it and I really like it. I think it's cool that JoBlo uses it, too.

Here's how I translate letter grades to the four star system and the /10 system:
A+ = **** = 9.5-10/10
A = ***1/2 = 9/10
A- = *** = 8-8.5/10
B+ = *** = 7-7.5/10
B = **1/2 = 6-6.5/10
B- = **1/2 = 5-5.5/10
C+ = ** = 4.5-5/10
C = ** = 4/10
C- = ** = 3-3.5/10
D+ = *1/2 = 2.5/10
D = *1/2 = 2.5/10
D- = *1/2 = 2/10
F = * = 1-2/10
The grade-1-10/10 conversion isn't perfected, but mostly because I don't really use it. I've been using that same letter grade-star conversion for several years, and I think it works pretty well.

I like the out of ten scoring system more than the out of four or out of five systems because it makes grading a little more easier. For example if a movie is rated 3/4 stars that could be anything from a 6-8 out of 10. I think that having more options allows you to rate movies more accuratly.

Movie Dude's system is the closest to mine of everyone here. I use the 1-10 system on JoBlo, but the four-star system is the one I've grown up with, so that one I use everywhere else. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I use the /**** scale, with half stars, but lately have been translating that into /10 often for posting here, since it seems to be the universal JoBlo scale. I translate them like this:
**** =10/10, 9/10
*** 1/2 =8.5/10, 8/10
*** =7.5/10, 7/10
** 1/2 =6/10
** =5/10
* 1/2 =4/10, 3/10
* =2/10
1/2 =1/10
ZERO =0/10 (no film outside my bottom 10, and those I cannot judge, has this putrid rating)

I use the A+-F grading system. But I have used the /10 and star rating systems in the past.

I use the ()/***** scale. When I started reading movie reviews in the city paper, they used this scale, and always have. I use it since it is the one I'm used to the most. Then I got Maltin's Movie Guide in 97, and have always used it as a reference, but I never changed my original rating system. However, since Maltin went by 1/2 stars, I decided to combine that with my five star method, so I go by half stars, but only up to five (the newspaper never has done that). Before I came to the board, I never thought of using letters or numbers to rate the movies, but I found it easy to translate my ratings into numbers, so I'll use that occasionally, makes it easier sometimes, to relate to the other schmoes and their ratings.
***** = 10/10
****1/2 = 9/10
**** = 8/10
***1/2 = 7/10
... and so on.
It's basically doubling the amount of stars. An easy conversion.

For me, it's the exact same system, and I adapted it the same way. I've also used the ***** system with the half-points, but after coming here I've started converting to the /10-system. Not that anyone gives a damn, but that's how it goes.

I use a 1-10 scale, and a five star system. However, I use the scale more.

Since I'm a teacher in real life, I use the grading scale (like Entertainment Weekly). There are a lot more options with pluses and minuses for each grade.
Also, it doesn't bother me when other Schmoes implement their own brand of rating movies. Four or Five-Star Systems and Numerical Scales are cool as well.

I use the 1/10 - 10/10 scale, because like the others, I've used it for the IMDB. So I just got used to grading movies that way and I agree that it's cool that JoBlo uses the same grading system.
