A pretty good list. These are the movies that made your Top 25 that would also have made mine:
American Beauty As Good as it Gets E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Jaws Life is Beautiful One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Schindler's List The Silence of the Lambs
As a matter of fact, there are only a few in your list that I wouldn't consider good...

Hey, it's your list. You have the right to enjoy these films whether I like them or not. Here's my take on it though:
1. Magnolia (overrated; a few good stories, a few bad stories; C+)
2. E.T. (excellent; one of my top 10 films of all-time, and the '80s best film; A+)
3. Requiem For A Dream (I admire Aronofsky's mesmerizing vision, but it's pretty hard to take for a fave; A+)
4. Election (Reese's unofficial breakthrough is a sharp rebel comedy; good choice; A+)
5. The Sixth Sense (not a top 25 for me, but definitely one of my faves ever; A+)
6. One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest (I admired it when I first saw, but I want to see it again to see if my opinion's changed; A+)
7. Toy Story 2 (Hi, I'm Brian, I'm 24, and I love CG-animation. Am I wrong? No. A+)
8. The Royal Tenenbaums (if I had to pick a fave Anderson-Wilson flick, it'd be this one; A)
9. As Good As It Gets (not passionate about it, but it is a very good film; A)
10. American Beauty (the last Best Picture winner to truly deserve it; A+)
11. Mulholland Drive (yup, it's pretty much my fave Lynch too; A+)
12. Edward Scissorhands (haven't seen it; N/A)
13. The Silence of the Lambs (serial killer suspense at a fevered intensity; more great filmmaking than great entertainment; A+)
14. Schindlers List (this is where I'm wondering if it's a best list or favorite, 'cause this film is no fun to watch; still, it's Spielberg's finest; A+)
15. Welcome to the Dollhouse (really liked it, but haven't seen it since that first viewing; A)
16. Traffic (not my pick for Soderbergh's best, but certainly runner-up for the title; A+)
17. Rain Man (it's been a while since I've seen this, but remember it being pretty darn good; A+)
18. The Shining (it's been too long since I've seen this Kubrick flick, but remember thinking it wasn't as good as his best work; B)
19. Life Is Beautiful (an underrated masterpiece if there ever was one; this one got to me big time in theatres; A+)
20. Donnie Darko (haven't seen it yet; N/A)
21. Pleasentville (grossly undervalued; a visionary triumph, and one of '98s best films; A+)
22. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (Ang Lee's mythical fantasy exerts a powerful hold; A+)
23. Jaws (another Spielberg classic; not high on the fave list for him, but it's way better than any of the sequels; A+)
24. Toy Story (it gets a 10 in my book; A+)
25. The Virgin Suicides (haven't seen it yet; N/A)

24. Toy Story(***1/2)
25. The Virgin Suicides(****) Very well done, but not the great film I expected, though it has been awhile since first having seen it.
Your favorites are very contemporary, and when you said you haven't seen too many of the "old" films, I hear ya. I was at that same point, some years ago. I most definitely agree with "E.T.", although that will always be my "favorite" film of all time. I can watch it forever and not get tired of it. I've already seen it five times in the theater; I've never watched a movie that many times in a movie theater, ever. It is one of those films that defines the essence of childhood, and I relate to it more than anything (if you want to, search for my review of it in the Video Capsules). I myself, wouldn't make any such list of favorites, because it would be too hard to choose between them; I have one though, and I have a "best" of all time. That's as far as I'll go. It's too hard a task for the number of films I've seen. I seriously don't know how the other schmoes are able to make such lists, but it's interesting to see them anyhow, even if I don't agree. But that's bound to happen anyway. I can't stress enough how you need to watch older flicks, they are too good to be missed, at least start with seeing all the classics... As far as I can tell, you AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN' YET.

Well I like some of your 25, but I have to admit I haven't seen most of them. I do like E.T. I think everyone does. There are only a few I like which probably no one else likes. I like romance/fantasy/shakespeare-era/....a whole mix.
1. Legend (tom cruise, mia sara, and tim curry)
2. The Last of the Mohicans (Daniel-Day Lewis)
3. Ever after cinderella story ( Drew Barrymore)
4. Clue (tim curry)
5. The Secret Garden
6. Charlie's Angel
7. Rat Race
there are others but too tired to think.

There are only 3 movies you listed that would be in my top 25 and only one in my top ten.
Those three are:
American Beauty
Schindler's List
Traffic
IMO you have too many contemporary films specifically from the 90's and should rent DVD's of classics
