Probably the most underrated of that volcanic class of UK/Irish actors that exploded on the scene in the late 50's and early 60's. (Burton, O'Toole, Richard Harris, Alan Bates, Terrence Stamp and Tom Courtenay.)

1. Sir in The Dresser
2. Geoffrey Firmin in Under the Volcano
3. Leo in Miller's Crossing (My favorite...)
4. Winston Churchill in The Gathering Storm (Could move up the list as time goes on...)
5. George Dunlap in Shoot the Moon
6. Dr. Sloper in Washington Square
7. Mick Rice in The Entertainer
8. Fouche in The Duellists
9. Scrooge in Scrooge
10. Dewey Wilson in Wolfen

I agree with you Professor that he's long been a fine, underrated actor, and was excellent in The Dresser.Saturday Night and Sunday Morning,Tom Jones,Murder on the Orient Express(as Poirot)and Erin Brockovich have all been significant for him,too-but i also like him best as Leo in Miller's Crossing(one of the great gangster films).

Ed Masry in ERIN BROCKOVICH

I love that movie a lot. It's probably at least in my top 3 favorite films of all-time.

Erin Brockovich is the only film of his that I've seen and he was pretty damn good in it, having to perfect an American accent and all. I know many people liked Benicio Del Toro in TRAFFIC better, but I think Finney should have won the Oscar for his performance in Erin Brockovich.

Finney's performance as Sir in The Dresser is the shining moment in the actor's career. I feel that he should have taken the oscar home that year, instead of Robert Duvall, but then again, I have not seen Tender Mercies He was also given good support from actor Tom Courtenay. Finney gives a strange but thoroughly enjoyable performance as Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express. And then, of course, his most recent Oscar-nominated performance in Erin Brockovich which was a bit overrated by many. I'm not saying it was bad though, the aforementioned performance in The Dresser was much better.

Duval's work in Tender Mercies is really brilliant, as well. They are two landmark performances. Tom Courtenay is a superb and underappreciated actor. He was excellent in the 60's in Dr. Zhivago and (especially) The Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner. Another 80's gem is Let Him Have It, which is a gut-wrenching drama, and he is particularly outstanding in it.

Courtenay is very underappreciated. I enjoyed him very much in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, a very underrated gem, and also in Dr. Zhivago. Though, I have not heard of Let Him Have It, sounds interesting though.

First place I ever saw Christopher Eccleston. Courtenay plays his Father, who's an ordinary, decent man, with restrained anger and overwhelming dignity. It's a shattering performance, that has stayed with me for a long time.
