Matthew Poncelet in Dead Man Walking has got to be his best performance. He should have won the Oscar, which he lost to Nicolas Cage for a performance that wasn't nearly as good as Penn's was.

Excellent call there. "State of Grace" is such a kick ass flick, rife with great performances. Besides the awesome Penn, you also have top-notch performances by: Ed Harris, Gary Oldman (the most versatile actor we'll ever see), John C. Reilly, John Turturro, Robin Wright, Burgess Meredith.
Everyone who manages to catch this flick usually raves about it. It's only flaw? It was released at the same time as "Goodfellas"...swallowed up in the wake of that landmark movie. Art certainly imitated life in that case, as the Italian mob upstaged the Irish gangsters in NYC.
Veered off topic there, but, Ebastard hit a sweet spot for me.
I think Terry Noonan is Penn's best work, with Emmit Ray ("Sweet and Lowdown") coming in a VERY close second.
