Julianne Moore: Hannibal (Not given the credit it deserves because she's not Jodie Foster)
Chloe Sevigny: Boys Don't Cry (A remarkable performance overlookd because of an oscar winning co-star)
Melora Walters: Magnolia (The finest performance in the film, but all people taled about was Tom Cruise (though he was brilliant too))
Kate Winslet: Heavenly Creatures (Underrated because it appears that about 6 people have seen this film)

Marlon Wayans and Jared Leto (Requiem For A Dream)

The women in the movie got a lot of credit, and deservedly so. But Wayans and Leto were also excellent, I think due to their previous work.

Wayans is normally known for his outrageous comedies but he can act seriously, as he showed in the movie and Leto is a great actor in my opinion, not just a pretty face (Fight Club, American Psycho, Panic Room).

I agree, Chloe Sevigny was great in that movie. She's a major talent.

James Woods in Salvador and Once upon a Time in America.I agree with SAI that Heavenly Creatures should be better known.Who would have thought Winslet would have such a murky past?I always thought she seemed such a decent person.

Mr. Fishburne also turns in a better-than-the-movie performance.

Jeff Bridges: Rancho Deluxe and Cutter's Way. He was also the only good thing about the remake of The Vanishing

Elias Koteas: Exotica (a complex, easy to hate character that he gave humanity to.)

Samuel L. Jackson: The Red Violin

Tim Roth: Gridlock'd

Paul Newman: Buffalo Bill and the Indians

Denzel Washington: For Queen and Country

Harvey Keitel: Smoke and Shadrach

H. Bogart: In A Lonely Place (Not widely known...)

Robert Mitchum: Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison

Gregory Peck: Moby Dick

Marlon Brando: Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) and One Eyed Jacks

Katherine Hepburn: Summertime

Sidney Poitier: Buck and the Preacher (a terrific movie he also directed.)

I agree with you on all your choices, Buck. But these 3 gave me strong impressions especially.

Marilyn Monroe - NIAGARA
Humphrey Bogart - THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE (same for PETRIFIED FOREST, he should've gotten at least an oscar nom for both these films. When he's playing a hero that everybody loves, he's great; when he's playing a villain like in these two films, he's still amazing. Bogie is a great legend, but he's grossly underrated as an actor)
Joan Crawford - WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?
Gregory Peck - THE MAN IN THE GRAY FLANNEL SUIT
Ava Gardner - THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA
Clark Gable - MOGAMBO
Katharine Hepburn - SUMMERTIME & THE RAINMAKER
Fred Astaire - ON THE BEACH

Ava's pretty great in Mogambo, too. I wouldn't have looked twice at Grace Kelly with her around, myself.

You're definitely right about her performance in Night... Bette Davis played that role on Broadway, but I can't imagine anybody but Ava in it. She had started to lose her overwhelming beauty by then, but she was still really sexy. The kind that counts, that comes from within.

I agree, Ava was also excellent in Mogambo; I love Grace Kelly, but in that film her performance didn't come close to neither Ava or Clark's.

You're right, as much as I LOVE Bette Davis (my top actress), nobody could've played that role as well as Ava did. That presence of hers with that intense, powerful performance in that movie makes her a great actress, along with the rest of her films. As an actress, Ava's quite underrated imo.
