Hello all, I usually post in the other parts of the forum and tend to stay away from the horror sections for a few reasons. The main reason is this. Movies just don't scare me. I don't know if it is me going into a movie thinking it's just that, a movie. Or if there is just something wrong with me.
Now, i have jumped a few times in flicks that will slam a door out of no where, or somebody will just pop out and yell out of no where, but never been scared. Jumping from shock is a lot different then being terrified.
Now I look to the experts, the movie horror buffs. Please recommend a movie that is really terrifying. I want to be so scared i don't want to sleep at night. I want to be checking ever door in my house to make sure there is nobody on the other side. I want to do what people do when they are scared... shit my pants.
Please help. Point a schmoe in the right direction.

Not a movie, but play "Silent Hill 3". If that doesn't scare you, abandon all hope of being scared.

The Paris Hilton sex tape. Wait, you said horrified, not sickened... Oh well...
Seriously, try out some supernatural horror:
The Entity
Suspiria
The Haunted (Although you'll do well to track this one down)

Suspiria Good one. If supernatural/unknown stuff scares you, this one will. The opening alone was scarier than a lot of things I've seen lately.
Also, I don't know why but the chinese "The Eye" scared the CRAP out of me when I first saw it (and in theaters it's even worse, that "sit tight" thing is the coolest fucking thing ever).

It all depends on what kind of material resonates with you. Ghosts, the undead, slashers, aliens or any of a number of others. Recommendations would be easier if you narrowed down your preference. Some movies that still cause uneasiness in me –
Suspiria
The Entity
Repulsion
The Brood
Blood and Black Lace
Black Christmas
Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me

I really don't think you're going to find anything that scares you.

Slashers i suppose, I'm not really sure though, freddy and jason movies didn't make me budge, same for the evil dead trilogies.
Also, The hitcher did nothing either.
I really do enjoy horror movies, they just don't scare me. I need to find the one that will knock me on my ass.

Watch the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre; it might not scare you, but it will definitely disturb the hell out of you if you've never seen it before (espescially the dinner table scene).

Yeah... Showgirls, nice try! I'll never sit through that POS again.
I've seen the original TCM, yes kind of disturbing, but only throughout the movie, after I didn't even give it a second though.

Candyman
Jacob's Ladder
Those two scared me on first viewings and still provide some skin crawling moments.

When I really want a movie to scare me, I have a certain 'ritual' I must go through. I watch it in my basement alone at night, which is creepy enough. Of course, the room has to be as dark as possible. Sound is very important too, I watched The Eye (someone mentioned this one, and I agree) with headphones on and I seriously had to keep pausing the movie and looking around the basement.
I believe in ghosts, so those movies (Ju-ON, The Eye, etc) scare me. Also, every time I watch an alien movie I can't help thinking: "We can't be alone!" So movies like Fire In The Sky are absolutetly terrifying to me (although that movie's sort of bad, it's the most realistic Alien Abduction movie I know of, and the scenes with the aliens... damn).
Alot of people seem to be scared by The Vanishing (the original) and I can see why. It's a slow movie that's disturbing when you think about it afterwards.
The 'Drop of Water' segment in Black Sabbath had a corpse I didn't soon forget, so did The Ring.
I also agree with Jacob's Ladder, that's an excellent one.

I watched Suspiria and have got to say that I was very disappointed. Other than set design, this movie blew. I didn't understand much of what was going on and it just seemed very poorly strung together.
On another note, watch The Exorcist. This blows my mind every time I see it, especially knowing that it is based off of a true story (a boy in the early 20th century). I think that it is really horrifying on a deep level because Linda Blair was only 14 years old when she did this. I don't know how the hell her parents were able to watch their little girl go through with the stuff in the movie.

Have you ever seen Shining? The Kubrick version.
In general it's considered by many, many people as the scariest movie ever made, including myself.
If Slashers don't do it for you, I think supernatural horror might. Personally I'm more scared by movies which leave a lot to the imagination, which is also the reason I disagree with mant of the suggestions people have given here.

Definitely if you haven't seen the Shining then go for that. I also think it's the scariest movie of all time.
The only other movies that genuinely scared me are Ringu and Session 9, but I think only Session 9 because I watched it all alone in the pitch black with the volume up really loud, and the music is seriously creepy.

Gotta be The Shining. Or Session 9.

Go with Black Christmas. Everybody hails Halloween as the originator of its kind (slashers) but BC was far creepier. Even more amazing is that it's directed by Bob Clark, who couldn't be any more different with his films Porkys and A Christmas Story.

Mr. Hokey Pokey, I know your problem.
The only movies that scare me anymore are Asian horror movies.
Here are some that are quite scary (all you have to do is watch them in the dark with headphones on):
- "Pulse" - creeepy and disturbing
- "Shutter" - even creepier
- "Tale of Two Sisters" - a wonderful movie, and very scary
These three got to me more than "Ringu" and "Ju-on", though those are somewhat frightening.
Ive yet to be truly scared out of my mind though.

Wow "Shutter" really got me, I watched it this weekend by myself at 2 in the morning. Holy shit I'm still a little shaken :)
I'll definitally be recommending this (8/10) Thanks a lot, great pick.

Omg, I've been looking all over for Suspiria but I can't find it anywhere.
Anyway, Last House on the Left is scary, but in a make you wanna barf, snuff film kinda way. 28 Days Later scared the shit outta me the first time because it's about the evil side of human nature (and zombies- you gotta love zombies).

Is it scary?? Not really but you can decide that. I promise you though that the death scenes will stick with you for a few days and you won't be able to get them out of your head. This movie sickened me more then almost any other movie ever has, and I loved every second of it. (I do not however support the cruelty to animals that took place.)
