View Full Version : Why do you like horror ?

After drinking many bundies (Aussie Rum) this evening, I was trying to quantify why I love to watch horror films.

The best I could come up with was; I love the shock! Even when I know what's going to happen there is that element of surprise. The idiocy of checking out that "strange noise" or the 'let's split up'. The kills that come hard and fast.
I find myself yelling at the TV. "you dumb arse motherfucker! You deserve to die". Then the satisfaction; knowing that although the hero/ine appears to have won there is always the uncertainty.

In my pissed haze I guess; I love horror just because I do.

..............oh yeah and the blood and guts and grease of the rod is pretty cool to.

Thoughts anybody?

I love horror movies because of the kills and the shock level. Its always nice to be shocked by a movie. Then comes the kills. Since horror movies have much more creative kills than other movies its what makes them so great. Uh I think that makes sense.

Because the best of them always deal with the darker side of humanity, which always interests me. Examples of this would be Romero's Dead Tril... er.. Quadrilogy.

There's a certain satisfaction that comes from watching stuff that the 'moral majority' would never even think of watching cuz they think it'll turn us all into serial killers. Horror's more in tune with reality than most of the crap they watch on TV:p

The atmosphere of horror films, mainly.

Well put Syxx. These films deal with the thoughts that we all have at one point or another and are afraid to voice for fear of being called a sicko, insane or whatever else some people come up with. Horror explores things that other films wouldn't dream of touching. :)

I just don't really get into a movie that is 'just' suspenseful, it has to be horrifying aswell. If Laurie Strode was screaming "Tommy let me in!" as her psycho neighbor was approaching her from behind, it just wouldn't have the effect that a cold blooded serial killer has. Yes it has to deal with the darker (and more interesting) side of nature, as syxxpac said. I also love horror because it's a genre that I know more about than anybody I've actually met in real life. It makes me feel good, to be 'the horror guy' as opposed to just some dude who likes 'movies in general.' Horror has so many 'underground' films that most of us on this board have seen but the mainstream knows nothing about. I love telling people "Yeah, that's nothing compared to Cannibal Holocaust." You know? I also like how some of the best horror movies were done on low-budgets (Halloween, NOTLD, Evil Dead), substituting creativity for cash, and made immense amounts of money. That's something I want to do someday! Horror is where it's at!

Thats completely it. Also the reason why I like reading up on serial killers and stuff like that.

I don't know I would say because it entertains me.
I like atmospheric horror movies like The Hitcher or pure cheesy movies like Chopping Mall.
I am very open minded because I also like movies by Cronenberg or Tsukamoto (Gemini,Tetsuo,Bullet Ballet,Tokio Fist)

I don't know why. I used to hate it as a kid, but now I love it more than just about anything. I study it like it's a fucking job. And Kanadian_kev, I also like it cause I know more about it than any of my friends and it makes me feel good, telling them about it. I'm even writing my own right now and a lot of my friends don't understand it, but I like it and I can't wait to make it. Horror's just a fun genre.

I love horror films because for me, they answer questions that are probably on a lot of peoples' mind but are afraid to ask. "What if some psycho escaped from a loony bin and decided to kill people for no reason?" "What if somebody walked along a graveyard and got possessed by a ghost or zombies started to come back?" They feature things that probably would never happen but there's always a slim chance. Plus, they're a lot of fun and it's fun being scared when you know nothing's bad going to happen to you.

I really enjoy horror because they explore all those horrible things which occur everyday in our news..... How often are we inundated with tales of rape, murder, genocide etc Horror movies although not always biographical, explore the horrible situations which any one of us could go through someday.....
They allow those people, like myself, who would never actually commit such atrocities to explore that dark side of human nature.....

That serious answer aside, I just enjoy being scared......
(although this does'nt occur as often as what it used to after witnessing as many horrors as I have):p

I love to watch horror films because they allow feelings of tension and dread to be expressed in a comfortable and safe environment. You could say they are cathartic but those that are effectively creepy stay with you and highten your level of fear. So, to put it bluntly: I like being scared and having that feeling when I know I'm in control of the situation and not caught off guard.

I like horror movies because by watching them it helps me deal with my own fears and in a sense it does make you think how you would react in situations that maybe somewhat similar (no, I am not saying that Jason or Freddy or Micheal is going on a rampage) Also let's face it, some horror movies are the most unintentional comedic movies you will ever see

There must be a reason why some love them and others dont, but I cant put my finger on it. Ive always been drawn to the dark and exciting, but have no idea why.

After watching "Decoys" I have to wonder why I like horror! Seriously though for me a good horror film has the ability to make me watch it over and over again, while making me think it is the first time I've seen it.....

Oh yeah: Chocula I've figured it out. There's no beer on the crispies.

I think one of the main reasons I like horror is because I just have a dark side of me, and horror feeds the need I have to experience and view something tragic and disturbing. I've always loved horror even as a kid.

I love the feeling of shock and fright , also.

There's somethin mysterious/alluring... Almost in a way "taboo" about it.... I was never allowed to watch many (if any) horror movies when I was younger, but in the video store I'd always walk past the Horror section, wondering what it'd be like to watch "A Nightmare on Elm Street" or "Critters" and trying to remember which few horror movies I did manage to see (The Gate and Child's Play being 2 I remember I saw at other peoples' homes)

I think in a way when I was younger too, I was almost afraid to rent or watch a horror movie... Because of the (what I thought to be) fucked up grotesque pictures on the back of the VHS boxes, etc. I wasn't sure if I actually wanted to watch those movies, even if I had been allowed....

Now catching up on all the Horror classics I was always curious about at a young age, (and re-watching the few I remember seein from long ago) I've hadda blast... The un-reality of it, combined with the "what if it happened" factor make it my absolute favourite genre! :D

I agree with those who say that it makes you think what you might do in a similar situation, or how you would cope.

Also, I love the sense of community you get from loving horror. It's always been considered something of an underground genre, so when you love horror you instantly have something in common with all those others whose tastes are a little left of the mainstream. Exactly how websites like these develop, I guess.

Dawn of the Dead
The Exorcist
Interview With the Vampire
The Shining
and most recently, The Devil's Rejects.

Perfect examples of why I personally love the genre...

I repeat it I like the horror genre because I find it entertaining and I like to be scared or to feel a creepy dark atmosphere.
