I usually don't like mindlessly repetitive topics (other than my own), but what the hell. So you know those sections of newspapers, where some columnist gives their "(whatever) thought of the day". This is for your horror thought of a day. So, here I go:

Horror's on the mainstream decline.

Ok...(Cracks knuckles) If what you are relaying is true, then what does a comment like that say about the films being produced by the 'Major Studios'?

Is it the Remakes (ala 'Dawn of the Dead') add nausium? Is it the lack of invention on the part of the studio heads?

The corporate greed? Do they really give a damn?

Is it a combination of all of these things?

Damn good question dont you think?

Well since mainstream doesn't really seem to flinch as far as remakes are concerened (and remakes are some of the biggest bo totals), and. . .corporate greed doesn't, uh, really have anything to do with box office figures, so neither?
People are just getting bored with horror. Yes the movies make a profit, but compare the total grosses to when scream launched the uprise, when those flicks reached 100+ million. Now horror "hits" get about 40 million. Since The Ring no movie has penetrated the mainstream and lasted (I mean the build-up for ring 2 was good hype). Until we get another sixth sense, ring, whatever, I think the bo totals and mainstream interest will decline.

Thanks. I'll be back next Thursday. Since I'll be gone, here are my thoughts for the next few days.

Friday ~ I love my Chucky doll.
Saturday ~ I Drink Your Blood is an entertaining b-movie.
Sunday ~ Dark Castle is to Hammer what fisting is to waving.
Monday ~ I recently bought Luther the Geek. It looks way cool.
Tuesday ~ I've yet to review a good horror film for my newspaper.
Wednesday ~ My 50" HDTV doesn't handle videotapes so well. You'd think it would be a perfect TV set, but it's not (it's still neat, though).

Weird, I thought it was a cool set. It had nice extras, I mean the best of the films have commentaries, and you get your usual making offs and the such. Whats not to like?

I really enjoyed listening to the director of part 6. I wish they gave that dude more horror movies.

Silent Hill should be excellent. I mean excellent-excellent, like. . .
Like okay, imagine a lemon. So it tastes really good, right? It tastes really good. But if it was a little fresher it's taste really really good, like some kind of garden of eden fruit, okay. Now imagine if it were even better than that, then it would be excellent. Now imagine the tree that would bear that fruit, right, and imagine how excellent it must be to have all these excellent lemons. Then imagine the field where that tree grew and the surrounding countryside, imagine that it has dozens of these trees planted everywhere, just as excellent as the other excellent lemon tree. Imagine how much excellence that place has.
Like that.

Or I just hope it doesn't suck, whatever.

Seriously C have you ever seen 'Henry': Portrait of a serial Killer?

I know that you said 'No more serial killers'...But this film has a stark naturalistic style that is must see, with Michael Rooker as the lead. It is filmed in a way that feels all to real, disturbing, haunting and unforgettable...a great film worth seeing.

Hey guys (X-DES-Zombie) whats up?

Just wanted to stop in real quick, first to address the 'C' man. I know what you mean about the 'Bundy' film, I happened to be surfing the pay channels late one night and quite by accident came across 'Bundy' on HBO.

I remember that it was part of this sudden onslaught of fast buck direct to video cash ins taking up shelf space at 'Hollywood and Blockbuster Video' along with 'Dahmer' and 'Ed Gein'...both eqauly pathetic pointless exploitation.

The 'Bundy' film was some sick twisted shit, it seem to jump from one depraved scene to the next, having sex with his female victims after killing them...he even demands that his wife to act like she is dead while fucking her too.

The irony on the part of the filmmakers is the closing moments of the film as he is being readied for execution, trying to somehow make the audience feel sorry for him. WTF?

Anyway 'C'...If you do check out 'Henry' P.O.A.S.K let me know your take on the film, trust me, unlike the DTV so-called serial killer flicks, Henry is a thinking mans film...you wont be disappointed.

Oh and zombievictim meet me at the pub...1st rounds on me!;)

But then it had been too long since I had seen the movie. Now that I've rewatched it (what a gory frickin' movie), it only reinforced that opinion. The film has a fantastic concept, an interesting universe, great characters but suffers of terrible visual effects and some uh . . . well, some of the gore looked terrible. Still, scary as hell. I think a remake would make it great. But again, that's only because I don't understand the hatred towards remakes.

No, I dont totally hate remakes. Hellraiser just doesnt have a remake friendly premise. It would feel like a sequel imo. Because the first one is so original a remake would feel a little ho hum.

It's kind of funny, I just rented four of the "Hellraiser" movies this week as homework for my "Helloween" episode of my "Horror Talk" series.

The original movie...is so great and special in its own way that I think it would be blasphemy to remake it. Sure, not all the gory special effects were not that convincing, but when you consider all hard work Clive Barker, the great cast the rest of the film crew put into the film, especially for a low-budget film, "Hellraiser" is pretty damn good. Honestly, if they remade, gave it the extra budget and made it "shinier" to watch...it would lack the raw edge that made it so great. Really, I don't think the movie is that hard to follow, even with some of those "special" effects. The film is great, with or without it.

The sequel "Hellbound: Hellraiser II" is just as good. It's one of those rare sequels that actually builds up from the last movie and doesn't just rehash everything from before. After Kirstie dealt with Pinhead and his "crew" before in reality, she was now facing him in Hell! What a great sequel, it is so cool, even if its slightly less serious then the last movie. And, the backstory we learn on Pinhead! I thought this was one of the best sequels that can follow after a classic original.

The video store didn't carry the UNDERRATED "Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth," so I had to go on continue up with "Hellraiser: Bloodline." I have such an odd history with this film. I first saw it on TV when I was younger and hated it (and I don't think it was because it edited for TV either). Then, I rented it a couple years ago for homework for one of my earlier "Horror Talk" episodes when I was first introducing the Pinhead's character.

It was a little better, but it was still flawed. And, here I am watching this week...and I really like it now! Talk about a films having to grow on you. They way tried to deal with the origins of the puzzle box...I now think its extremely well done. The "past" times in victorian times or something...refreshing! The "present time" segment with the Bruce Ramsey character creating the puzzle box building or something...effective. And even the "future" segment in space...so what if it was in space, the space station turning literally turning into a puzzle box and defeating Pinhead...such a fitting end to Pinhead! Bravo! Now, if only Dimension would make the unrated DVD with the original cut by Kevin Yagher, not "Alan Smithee"...

I also rented the new "Hellraiser: Deader"...a pleasant surprise to me. With this film, they re-incorporate the "toy maker" storyline from "Hellraiser: Bloodline" with the cult leader being another ancestor of Bruce Ramsey character. I liked that. But, you know what sucks, the DVD was freezing right at the very end! Right at the climactic when you-know-who faced up against you-know-who and did you-know-what, I didn't see anything beyond that. I still get what happened, but to not officially know what happens at the very end before the credits sucks! Still a good "Hellraiser" film.

You know, I think these latest "Hellraiser" films are getting a lot of flack for featuring less "Hellraiser" elements and I don't think its fair. They aren't really direct sequels to "Bloodline," they are just other "Hellraiser" stories that happened before Pinhead ultimate demise in H4. These different stories and the way they give them a "Hellraiser" approach are clever...except with "Hellseeker." All that was, was "Memento" combined with "Hellraiser" and it was so blah. "Inferno" was great. I don't care, there was enough "Hellraiser" elements in that. And the "Hellraiser" elements worked perfectly with the "Deader" plot.

Yes, "Batman Begins" is a complete restart of the Batman franchise. In Tim Burton's original "Batman," the people of Gotham city were freaked out by the mysterious Batman sightings and by the end of the movie, they knew he was a hero and the commisioner had the bat signal. Well, "Batman Begins" did all that over again and much better. They could even use the Joker in the next film if they wanted and it wouldn't matter.

Neither of which were successes, the island especially bombing terribly. And I know rejects didn't bomb, not at all. But it didn't do great.
And not just with rejects, there was the exact same article with the last horror movie that came out, Land of the Dead, when it didn't exactly do so hot (again, Land didn't bomb, but it definitely didn't do extremely well).
Maybe it's just arrow's version of box office, but if not, what is it? It's a little odd. So what's the deal? Are we going to see yet another section saying the exact same thing if Skeleton key doesn't go over that well at the BO?

If you pull that "I hate it, but I-I respect it for what it did!" line one more time I'm going to strangle you with fishing line.

That said, I fianlly caught that henry flick. The look and audio on that movie was pretty poor, and not gritty documentary style but more educational commercial style, but it was still all right. And the videotape scene made me feel light in the stomach. . . which is odd. . .the media was supposed to have desensitized me by now.

Anyways, anyways, horror thought of the day. . . well okay, I still hope silent hill turns out great.

This isnt a "Horror Thought" really...just something that needs to be stated regarding the perplexing situation with the box office receipts this summer.

For the record and according to industry news: The studios have been whining about a lack of (the usual) big ticket sales during this season of "Summer Blockbusters".

Perhaps its the economy??? Maybe its the lackluster non-stop remakes??? Or perhaps...just perhaps, it really is a matter of quantity over quality.

I firmly beleive that when the time comes and the major coporately run studios drive the genre into the ground, they will abandon 'Horror Films' and place blame on a lack of interest due to low box office sales....placing blame natch' on the audience themsleves.

I can see thier bullshit headlines on the so-called entertainment news shows: 'Horror is anemic at Box Office'

Refusing to take any REAL responsibility for their own lack of creative alternatives and REAL invention....sadly.

Doom still looks like a untra-violent, non-stop thrill ride to me however, and Emily Rose was oozing quality if were just judging the trailer.

Gald to see I'm not alone regarding the respect such classic horror films like John Carpenters "The Fog", I mean for gods sake do they really need to remake every damned film in existence?

Lets say Hypothetically...maybe lets say 20 or so years down the road how are the current generation of filmgoers going to react when some director wants to remake...

"The Lord Of The Rings" Trilogy??

It is pretty interesting that so many high-profile movies bombed, sure, but it has nothing to do with originality, since the ones that weren't original, like charley and the chocolate factory, fantastic four, and batman begins, weren't bombs, whereas the 'original' flicks like Island and Stealth were, so that's a no go.

And dead, I'm almost positive lotr will be remade eventually. I thought they went downhill after the first one myself. But, I doubt anyone but the hardcore film fans will give a flying rin tin tin when they are. This generation of movie goers are not ticked about the remaking of old 'classics' (some of which aren't classics, but horror fans seem eager to slap that lable on anything, I mean the fog, terror train?) not because they weren't from that generation, but because the majority are pretty. . . flippant? about movies. I mean look around the boards, the only people that do care are the buffs, because even young sprites on these boards give thumbs down to remakes and seem just as angry as the old timers if they're really into movies. Don't you think so?
I'm also almost positive that the only reason the remakes and sequels keep coming are because they have thus far been profitable. Nothing to do with an idea-drought. I'm under the impression there are plenty of original scripts, but why finance those when you got a sure-fire hit in Batman 11?

And I just realized that nobody was really talking about originality, and just quality over quantity. Which I, I actually agree about. . .
. . .whoopsy daisey.

But yeah. American release of DBZ is terrible. The voices suck and all the cool stuff is edited out. They even trimmed key episodes instead of trimming the fillers. But here in the land of deserts and cactus, we got it complete and REALLY well dubbed (the only show I'd rather see dubbed than in Japanese). Viva el Mexico.

If he thought all humanity needed to be wiped out, he wouldnt have survivors at the end of nearly all his movies.Hes give us the ending to Dawn 04. All he likes to show is that shit happens, and no social structure lasts forever.

..yeah, he likes to stick it to the man, but in his defense, its really pretty easy to do. Nearly ALL zombie movies make the military look like dicks. 28 Days Later sure didnt help. In fact, MOST horror makes them look like dicks.

Every time I come across off the wall comments that seem to provoke or confront by blasting someone who has a large following in the genre, it never fails to crack me up.

I see it as someone thinking…
” I’ll shock everyone with my negative views on George Romero”

George A. Romero a “Whinny little bitch”?

Ebonics aside, it must be so easy to trivialize a filmmaker like Romero. Your perspective on the man is totally amazing, so by your rational George is nothing more then a whiner, who just preaches simplistic and unsophisticated garbage, that he just sees the whole of humanity is no better than the zombies, deserving of total annihilation.

I’ll cut to the chase. Your summation of Romero and his point of view is a pretty skewered one at that. Lets get few hard cold facts out of the way, if you ask filmmakers like Wes Craven, Sam Raimi, Tobe Hooper or John Landis what kind of impact Romero’s feature debut ‘Night of the Living Dead’ had on their careers you’d find it interesting.

Back in 1993 there was a Documentary released by Tempe Video “Night of the Living Dead” a 25th anniversary. Which is extremely recommended viewing. Because many of the directors I have previously mentioned, were inspired by what this everyman from of all places Pittsburgh Pennsylvania had accomplished. Bucking the system and making his mark on a genre that more then benefited from it.

Romero put it all on the line while trying to hold on to his steady bread and butter making commercials. He dared to follow his dreams and went on to create a film that completely changed the genre forever.

That is not a matter of opinion, this is an historical fact that can’t be so easily denied or disputed. In any medium be it Filmaking, Art, Music, Writing or any other from of communication there have been people that made significant contributions that not only changed the status quo, but also paved the way for others who dared to follow.

Passionate people do express themselves through their work, each according to his or her gifts. Don’t take this the wrong way, but If your going to take time out of your day to trash Romero do your homework 1st, There are various themes that run throughout all of the dead films.

There is more going on then meets the eye, take “Night” as the example: the cold war paranoia, the obvious anger over the war in Vietnam, gun control and the dynamics of the family. The break down of our own society and the rise of a new one.

What makes NOTLD unique was that unlike traditional horror where good might have triumphed over evil and the good guy usually prevailed....George reminded us that we are fragile beings in the face of true inescapable horror, that in the real world the good guys don’t always come out on top and that the cavalry doesn’t always come to the rescue.

To reduce Romero’s ideology in his films to some dogmatic simple-minded thinking is way off base and inaccurate.

Romero sees the whole of humanity is no better than the zombies, deserving of total annihilation?

How did you arrive at that conclusion?

Romero is unwilling to understand the fact that human beings aren't perfect?

To suggest that Romero has this inability to understand human frailty is just plain ridiculous. Its more then obvious he fully understands the human condition, granted if you take a serious hard look, you will always find that tranquility doesn’t exist in Romero’s world.

This is true of ‘Night’ as it is of ‘Dawn’and 'Day'; the protagonists find themselves trapped in a hopeless bleak situation against a deadly foe. Plus, how our inhability to work together can lead to our own demise. Which is relevant to our continued existence in this world.

The “Dead Films” have always reflected the times in which they were made. Being that “Day” arrived in 85 during the ‘Regan Era’, it reflects our mistrust of authority, which was understandable considering what was going on at that point of our history.

The military response is always a show of force and power, however might doesn’t always make right as human history has shown. It doesn’t mean that the military on the whole are evil, but war should not be an absolute solution to a problem.

The Political Leaders have a responsibility to the greater good of the people, but some have thier own agendas to attend to. It is unfortunate that some people walk the halls of power with impunity, but they do exist.

Considering what is going on in the world right now, it seems that if we don’t learn from our past mistakes we are inevitably doomed to repeat them.

If anything Romero cares a great deal about the world we live in, his compassion for humanity is transparent, not wanting the annihilation of it, but reminding us of where we could be heading if we fail to get our shit together.

We should never take anything for granted, it seems that some find it easier to stick their heads in the sand and ignore the real problems facing each and every one of us, which is not being very realistic. Social and political ideology are not inserted to add substance to the dead films; they ARE the substance of the films themselves, they have always been.

Take the time to listen to the commentary tracks on Such DVD’s as Night, Dawn or Day and you will learn quite a wealth of information. Not just on the films themselves, but George A. Romero the man.
