It was pretty crazy, here's the story. I flew down to Vegas from Canada for the week by myself because... I've never really been anywhere in the states. Also, I wanted to see Land of the Dead and Devil's Rejects premiere at Cinevegas film festival. Once I got there, I saw many excellent films, but that's beside the point. I asked Rob Zombie a few questions about his movie (which I really really enjoyed). I basically asked what sort of cuts had to be made to the film in terms of violence and he pretty much told me "None! Why? It wasn't bloody enough?" Anyways he was pretty cool, Sheri Moon was there too and everybody was yelling: "Do the baby laugh!" She refused and said: "I already got my paycheck."
Yesterday was Land Of the Dead, the moment I had been waiting for. They had this whole 'dead' red carpet thing set up, and dozens of zombies were roaming the streets outside. Then Romero came out and the press asked him a bunch of stuff. I was kinda nnoyed by the press, they ask questions that somebody wrote down for them, but they act like they're huge fans of his. Most of these people don't know a thing about his stuff! So I got a few pictures of him, but then he took off. Inside, I just barely got into the theatre. It was jam packed and everybody was going totally wild. My kinda place! Romero stepped onto the stage, everybody went wilder, and he talked a bit and then received this Vanguard award (not sure what that is, oh well). The guy who presented it to him said he liked Vegas because: "You don't have to get shot in the head to become a zombie." See, another case of some dude who doesn't really know his shit. So then we saw the movie, and it blew me away. It was the greatest experience in the theatre I've ever had, I loved how everybody got so involved with the movie. Keep in mind I'm from tiny little Winnipeg and I've never seen anything like this in my life.
Later that night, I was wandering around with some guys I met, and we decided to stop by this one random casino. I'm not sure why, but we went over to the restaurant to have a seat... and guess who's sitting over in the corner? Romero himself! He finished eating and got up, so I went over there and spoke to him about how much I love his movies. He was really appreciative, asked me how I liked Land, I said it was the best movie I've seen in a long long time. Then I talked about where I was from, because they almost filmed Land there, and he gave me the "Oh yeah, yeah, Winnipeg, yeah we were thinking of shooting it there..." He pointed out my Day of the Dead shirt (the sign of a true fan) then we shook hands and he was off. I was pretty shocked about that whole experience.
So I'm thinking: Vegas is so sweet! I've got so many roles of film to develop of hot chicks, and me standing with hot chicks, and I met Romero and saw so many cool movies! Then on my way to the airport to catch my flight, I got jumped by a nazi with a knife! Yeah he just grabbed my bag (which had my camera, plane ticket, 120$ and my wallet) and I was struggling with him for a bit. He slugged me, didn't really hurt too much so I just stood there thinking: Fuck this guy! Then he pulled out a huge knife and put it in my stomache (not 'in', but like, I felt the point poke through my shirt). Then he started swinging it around, I avoided any damage and started running. So... there goes all my pictures of the sweet event. All in all, it was a blast!
