I'm not sure if any of you DVD aficionados know about this massive DVD sale that Barnes & Noble is currently having at the moment. It began earlier this month, and it ends June 30th. Every single DVD at all Barnes & Noble stores, including the website, is on sale. You can purchase two DVDs of your choice at any price, and you get the third DVD of equal or lesser value for free. And here's the real kicker: Barnes & Noble certainly means every DVD, because all of the CRITERION COLLECTION DVDs are on sale also! And that's not all. Not only are all the Criterions part of the sale, they're also 10% off. Plus, if you're a Barnes & Noble member, you save an additional 10%, which takes it to 20% off.

I went to my nearest Barnes & Noble last night, and I purchased nine DVDs (8 were Criterions, 1 was not). With the sale, the 10% off, and the additional 10% off from my membership card, my grand total came out to $194 dollars. If I had payed regular price, the total would be over $360 dollars. Also, I saved a little more money purchasing these Criterions at Barnes & Noble than I would have from Criterion DVD (http://www.criteriondvd.com), which is one of the least expensive places to purchase Criterions. I'm not sure this sale is worth it for other DVDs, but I do think it's worth it for the Criterions. So if you're in the slightest bit interested, you better hurry, because there's only nine days until the sale is over.

Anyway, this is what I purchased:

WILD STRAWBERRIES (spine: #139)
STRAY DOG (spine: #233)
SOLARIS (spine: #164) --- FREE

YOJIMBO (spine: #52)
SANJURO (spine: #53)
THE HIDDEN FORTRESS (spine: #116) --- FREE

THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC (spine: #62)
RASHOMON (spine: #138)
LA DOLCE VITA (non-Criterion) --- FREE

I must say you had an amazing shopping spree. Looks like I'm gonna have to hit up an ATM and head on over to Barnes and Noble.

With BN DVD prices you might as well be paying for three.

B&N has REAL high prices...not the best deal ever. The 20% off at Deep Discount DVD is a lot better

Borders had a sale awhile ago, buy 3 get the fourth free. The Criterions at the Borders by me are mostly 25.00 each with the exception of a few so I hit it up once, it was still quite a bit of money.

Life Aquatic
Rushmore
M
Rashomon (free)

Agreed. I don't think you can argue the fact that the DVDs are quite expensive at Barnes & Noble. Hell, new releases such as Casino, The Machinist, Hitch etc. are close to $30 each. When I went to Barnes & Noble, there were a lot of people purchasing loads of non-Criterion DVDs. So I assume they didn't have any complaints about the prices. Personally, I thought this sale was totally worth it for the Criterions alone. I wouldn't purchase non-Criterion DVDs at Barnes & Noble, not even with this sale going on, not really ever. They're just too expensive. I'd rather go to Best Buy, which is where I do most of my DVD shopping.

Really? My local Borders has never had a DVD sale like that. Or perhaps they have, but I didn't know about it. I'm going to have to keep track of my local Borders, just in case they have one of these DVD sales in the near future.

And at my Borders, the vast majority of the Criterions are $39.99 each, and some are even more.

Thank you, Tayzlor. All I wanted to do was to give the DVD fans the heads-up about this sale. So, mission accomplished. :D

I did the math, you could have saved $10 by going through Deep Discount with their current 20% off deal, however, by and large, it's still a pretty great deal. Anytime you can get Criterions for an average of $20 it's a steal. I think Barnes and Noble ridiculously overprices despite their better selection, and think that better deals can always be found online. But that's just me.

Great movie picks, by the way.
