When I was younger I was scared to death of Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy freaked me out. I look back on that and laugh at how dumb I was.

When I was younger I was absolutely petrified of Childs Play, but I could see why that would frighten a kid.

SILVER BULLET and JAWS.
JAWS i saw when i was about 6, and i was afraid to go into a swimming pool!:p
Silver Bullet gave me nightmares of werewolves for years. I wasnt scared of them when i was awake, but man, once i hit the sheets, it was baddd dreams.
...also MONSTER SQUAD. Not the entire movie, but the part where Dracula holds the little girl up and hisses at her near the end, bearing his fangs.
I think it was because i was that age, but i owe a supreme debt to it, as it was the first horror movie i had ever seen and introduced me to the entire gaggle of classic horror villians all at once.:)
...now if only they would release it on DVD.

Fire In The Sky scared the crap out of me and still does! Also, when I was really really young, I remember watching a movie called Saturday the 14th, which is obivously a comedy, but it terrified me for some unknown reason.

I watched Candyman at a young age and was terrified by the thought of saying his name five times in a mirror.
I was also scared by Wes Craven's New Nightmare, Child's Play, and Jason Goes to Hell. I thought Chucky was under my bed and Freddy's glove would tear through my sheets. I don't know why I was scared by Jason because it was pure cheese.

I was scared by that part too. I was also scared by the scene where the kids are trapped in the mansion and when the little girl says, "You, guys!" followed by the female vampires seen slowly walking towards them.

You know what seriously scared the life out of me as a child? Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' music video, when Jackson transforms into that horror creature. My parents always threatened to put it on if I was being disagreeable.

The two movies that used to scare the SHIT outta me, were of course Child's Play and the PG-13 rated "The Gate"... Child's Play is understandable, and the Gate? Well yea, I must've been like 4 or 5... heh! :p
poopontheshoes7

The Gate rocks! I love that movie. I actually think this movie is still a little scary. It has weird sort of surreal atmoshpere to it. And those freakin little demon things are creepy as well.

Jurassic Park. I used to find that extremely intense, and had many a childhood nightmare about raptors eating me alive, thanks to Sam Neill's "educational" speech at the first... Remember that little fat kid and the expression on his face? That was me :D
Also, Night Of The Living Dead '90, my introduction to zombies, and I remember the graveyard scene really freaking me out. Plus, at the time I lived in the country, and had many small cemeteries nearby, so... yeah, my imagination got quite vivid at times after seeing that movie for the first time.

Candyman
Sleepaway Camp
Friday the 13th part IV
Silver Bullet
..all of those freaked me out as a kid.
And for some weird reason..recalling which movie freaked me out the most lately, I came up with The Mothman Prophecies. I saw this at the theater and it littery creeped me out since the first scare that caused Richard Geere's wife to freak out. I was on the edge of my seat the rest of the movie. I felt a constant tension. I really enjoyed that movie.

Quite a few that did scare me when I was younger.
Nightmare on Elm St
Phantasm (gave me horrible nightmares)
Night/Dawn/Day of the Dead
Halloween
Friday the 13th
And a few others but only one to this day still gives me the creeps and I do not watch it alone
Amityville 2
I do not know why but the scene with him in the house alone, the camera starting low and floating above him and he knows something is behind him but nothing is there. Just the whole thing creeps me out.

I'll be honest here, the original Exorcist and Exorcist III creep and scare the ever loving shit of me. Call me a bitch but I just can't take it.
The elements of fear that both films play on are unreal IMO.
I don't know, maybe it's just me and a million other people but these two flicks mess with my head.
With that said though, there other flicks that I actually enjoy watching that creep me out but I can still sit the whole way through.......the original Halloween of course; the movie just hits a certain nerve with me, everything just clicks perfectly. The original Nightmare on Elm Street; the film is just a perfect example of excellent horror film making, by the time you get to the end of it you feel like you're fighting the fucker off yourself and you actually WANT him to die. Also, the original Nightmare scared the shit out of me as a kid, Wes owes me about 14 hours of sleep I'll never get back.

Yeah, Nightmare creeps me out when Freddy stretches his arms across that ally.
For reason that also gives me the chills. Just the imagery of it.
And in Jaws when the boy Kitner gets attacked, and you see those huge shark fins role out of the water and the boy disapear in a fountain of blood.
Truly freightning. hits me everytime.

Creepshow 2's story of The Raft
Necriomicon's story with the two cops
Some small indie/Canadian movie I saw where a guy's house was becoming this huge plant thing(his dad was a scientist trying to make the Garden of Eden)and the people going inside would just end up being killed by the plants(one woman became grass and a guy was pulled into some weird plant where he got crushed/eaten).

My parents bought me a b&w TV back when I was about seven or eight (about 1977/78) and I used to watch all kinds of freaky late night horror double bills every Friday night. Everything scared me...and I loved it. That pretty much cemented my love of the genre and as I grew a little older I saw countless classics. Dawn Of The Dead. Evil Dead. The Omen. Dozens of Hammer flicks. Amicus flicks. Creaky old RKO movies. Everything. And they all scared the shit out of me. I can still remember how many attempts it took me to get beyond the opening scene of The Evil Dead...the camera creeping across the water and through the trees with the ominous growling noises soundtracking it's movements. It took me three attempts. And that was just the first couple of minutes. These days i'm rarely scared. Some Japanese movies have given me the shivers though. Ju-on. The Ring. The Eye. A Tale Of Two Sisters. It's always a pleasure to rediscover something approaching the chills I felt as a child and in my early teens. It's something that reconnects me, however briefly, to the person I was then. Less jaded. Less aware of how much more scary reality is. It's important to escape reality every so often and horror movies (and books and comics) provide the perfect avenue. I fucking love it.

I just remembered another one. When I was a little kid I rented The Legend Of Boggy Creek, watched it with a friend, and practically shit myself. I remember looking on a map and seeing a Boggy Creek in Manitoba (a different one, but I didn't care) and thinking this movie was filmed in my neighborhood. I'd sure love to see this movie today, I'm sure it's terrible.

Lady In White always scared me as a kid, partly because she bared resemblance to Zelda from Pet Sematary, who scared me even more.
When judge Dune got the Cartoon eyes at the end of Who Framed Roger Rabbit I would run out of the room when I was little.
The Twins from the Shining still freak me out. It's just the way you know something is wrong with the it that goes beyond words, just like many scenes in Silent Hill2. Even parodies of that scene would freak me out.

I just mentioned this movie in another post, and had to bring it over here too, because I don't want to think I'm the only chicken out there about this scene...the evil little voodoo-zuni doll that stalks Karen Black around her apartment in Trilogy of Terror. To this day, I do not like anything doll-like that doesn't resemble an actual person (those collectable Troll things give me the creeps too). A close second to this memory is one from the Hammer t.v. series Hammer House of Horror, the segment called Charlie Boy. Brrrr.

Back in the early 70's there was a TV show on every Sat night that aired on KVOS tv in Bellingham WA called Nightmare Theater. It was hosted by this vampire guy who would introduce the movies(2 per night)and he would scare the shit out of me! I was probably about 8 or so at the time and the babysitter would allways watch this. They showed a lot of Peter Cushing stuff
like Island of Terror and Count Yorga Vampire.Great memories looking back now.

Yeah, I'm definitely one of those that doesn't get scared from movies anymore. So with the exception of #5, these are the movies that scared me as a kid.
5. Blair Witch Project - This is probably more on an honorable mention than it is an actual entry.
As I said before, I really can't get scared from movies anymore. Especially, if there's a monster or a Jason/Freddy/Michael Myers involved. The minute I see any of these guys, I am instantly reminded that I'm watching a movie, thereby negating any chance of being frightened anymore. Blair Witch tried to come as close to reality as any horror movie could. Making it seem like this could actually happen. Plus, we never saw the witch. And as it has been stated many times over centuries, "The greatest fear is that of the unknown". This movie, while it still didn't scare me, it came as close as it possibly could at this point in my life. Something that I can't ever see happening much again.
4. Trilogy Of Terror - That little voodoo doll practically made me sh#t out my own skeleton.
A couple of years ago, I came across this film at a video store & rented it out of nostalgia. Now that I see it with "present eyes" I can't believe how cheesy it looks. Though, the ending still has some frightening factor to it.
3. Trilogy Of Terror 2 - While the voodoo doll had nowhere near the scare that it did in the first flick, the second story in this movie, "Bobby" did.
2. Night Of The Living Dead - This was almost the "Blair Witch Project" of it's time. It has a very documentary feel to it. And to my mind, it was the first time I had ever seen the idea of zombies as truly scary.
1. The Exorcist - Boy, when I think of the time that this movie was first released & watching it as a kid, I know now why there hasn't been a movie since that has been able to scare me. This one got it all out of my system (my mentality is probably still scarred from this flick in a manner that I, even as an adult, have yet to realize). From here on end, all other horror flix are just a step down for my traumatized pimp-ass.

Nightmare on Elmstreet scared me off beds for a good year. I slept on the couch a lot more often after seeing it. The scene where Glenn is pulled into the center of the bed and a fountain of blood sprays up- Scariest shit ever.
Aliens made me afraid of doorways. I always had to look up to make sure an Alien wasn't going to grab me every time I walked through one. The first one made me afraid of stomach aches and gave me the idea that an alien was going to burst through my stomach.
Jurassic Park made me afraid that raptors are hidden in the bushes everywhere I went.
There's more, but that's off the top of my head. It was mostly incredibly violent, gory scenes that scared me as a kid.

the intro to 'blade' freaked me out when i was younder, must of only been like 9-10. i caught it on tv once, and i was shitting my pants at the intro in the club. freaked me the fuck out.
another film that freaked me like fuck was 'alien abduction:the mcphersons tape' damn some of the scenes in this movie terrified me. they still creep me out to this day. urhh
and the ending to 'the blair witch project'. i think this probably did it for a few people.

My first introduction into the Horror genre was at age 3. My mom took me to see "Wolfen." That movie is nowhere close to scary now, but at age 3....
I also had the oppotunity to see NOES at the theaters....good times...
Ah, the clown scene in Poltergeist...I was able to catch that at the movies too....Wheee!
I gotta say though, the one movie that creeps me out even today is, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I don't know why, but that movie is creepy....Gene Wilder and the boat scene.....

Troll 2 used to scare me when I was really young. I was to young to understand the bad acting and costumes and just focused on the trolls turning the girl into green goop and eating her.
A little known film called Cameron's Closet used to scare the hell out of me as well. Sadly, I watched it recently and it sucked.
Any appearance of Pennywise from It could easily of made me run out of the room when I was younger.

I think i saw a post with Poltergeist in it. So Ill add my 2 cents.I am feeling a bit more comfortable on the boards. Comfortable enough to emote. But the one thing I was never able to watch when I was growing up was the "face peeling scene" in Poltergeist. We all know the one. The paranormal investigator just finishes downing a maggot infested chicken leg and goes to the bathroom and proceeds to rip his face off. Of course, now I can watch it all in its entirety , it really is laughable, but I still have this inexplicable urge to shield my eyes for some reason, habit I guess. Oh yeah and booger from "Revenge of The Nerds" makes me want to puke too.

Zelda from Pet Semetary is the ONLY character in movie history to ever scare me. When i was a child I wasn't able to watch that movie alone just because of her. The first time I finished the movie in it's entirety, alone I had a white sheet covering my head so I couldn't completely make out Zelda's form ...

I agree with you. It didn't terrify me that badly when I saw it in theaters. However, one night after it was just released to dvd I had some friends over during a snowstorm and we decided to watch it in the dark. When it was time for them to leave, we were too freaked to go outside and because of the storm, we were all outside trying to quickly wipe the snow off their cars so they could leave and my sister and I could rush back inside, lol. I love the movie though, and to be honest I'm glad to have that particular memory, hehe. That is a rare thing to happen, especially for me.
I honestly believe that the Thriller music video has given me more nightmares than any horror film. I used to be afraid that the Michael Jackson zombie was slowly walking up the stairs to my family's house and was going to get us. *brrr* Also, in Hellraiser 2, I was really afraid of Julia when she didn't have skin. We had this staircase in our house when I was little and when my mom wasn't home I used to imagine she'd be coming down the stairs toward me, wiping her blood on the walls.

The Thing, while it doesn't scare me much anymore since I've seen it 100+ times, is still one of the most atmospheric films ever and manages to gives me goose bumps during a few scenes (I can NEVER anticipate the Palmer/blood test jump... you know the one ;))

The original Black Christmas is, in my opinion, the best slasher of all time (unless Psycho is considered a slasher for some reason), mainly because its villain is scary as all hell. The remake ruined the identity of the character and thus killed the suspense and terror of the story, but the 1974 classic is terror in its purest form. The "Billy/Agnes" stuff scares the fuck out of me.

Se7en still manages to creep me out. Every murder/victim scene is full of dread.

And what about this moment in Prince of Darkness? Man... makes my skin crawl!

^^^ Badass post.
I have a very specific, very irrational fear of the upside down spinning chair from the video in The Ring. For some reason that image and nothing else sends chills up my spine everytime I see it, without fail.
I can also recall a very disctinct fear of the kind of stairwells that don't have backing, spurred by the scene in Childs Play 2 where Chucky trips the dude with the hook. Though it was only descending stairs that bothered me, kind of a direct parallel to the actual scene. So here's 7 year old Danger, hauling ass down stairs without backing, scaring the shit out of his mother.

Pennywise the clown made me wary of storm water drains.

Just read Dale's comment about the Judge in Roger Rabbit *shudder*... scary stuff! I remember going to see it with my dad and not being able to sleep when I got home!!
The other one (which is quite apt ATM) is Michael Jackson's Thriller. I actually could not watch that as a child without crying!!!
