Did you know that the current WALKING DEAD comic series wasn't the first horror comic to use that title? Back in 1989 AIRCEL COMICS produced a 4 issue mini series 'The Walking Dead' which was written and illustrated by James Sommerville!!

Yeah, I know what you're thinking...seen one zombie comic or movie you've pretty much seen it all.

The story opens on an deadly space battle with 2 waring alien factions, within the depths of the cargo hold of the alien ships are large cannisters, which contain a chemical that is vital to their races continuing survival, it is used to re-animate their dead warriors.

The ship carrying the chemical agent is blown to shit, the debris from the alien craft falls to earth, soon the chemical is unleashed causing the dead to return to life...sounds pretty standard right?

Heres where it gets interesting...in the aftermath of the end of the world as we know it, a collective of vicious bloodthirsty zombies rise from the ashes, BUT with a difference!!! They can think, reason and talk...plus pack fucking uzi's!!!

They're like the 'Zombie' versions of the crypts and bloods, sporting sleevless jean jackets signifying their colors...they call themselves...'The Kids From HELL' These Zombies are absolute bad ass mofos!!

On the other end of the spectrum is a handful of the last surviving humans, who are hunted by the bad ass zombie street thugs! 'The Walking Dead' has various nods to Romero's dead series. The main character is black, shades of Duane Jones 'Ben' charcter.

Big time gun battles between the main character and 'the Kids From HELL! Way cool shite!!!

The whole talking, smart, weapon using zombie thing has been done. Read Brain Keenes two awesome but excessively gory zombie books The Rising and its sequel City of the Dead.
Theres some extremely gross shit in those books. One of my favs being a zombie baby eating its way through the womb of the zombie mother.
And a zombie ejaculating maggots. Pretty gross huh.

But back to the comic. Sound pretty slick, can these be pick up at the local book store?

The Rising and City of the Dead I have heard about, unfortunately I havent gotten around to picking them up.
But this series has more the peeked my interest!

What year were the books by Brian Keenes published?
The comic I spoke of was published by the now defunct 'Aircel' back in 89', you can pick the back issues up pretty much anywhere on the web.

Go to Ebay, I did see the entire mini-series being auctioned off.

I will say this about the comic:
The book is in black and white, the art is a bit rough being an early 80's indie comic, but still Jims work was solid. Id recommend this series highly to any 'Zombie Fan'!!!
Worth a look...

The zombie gangs bad-assed leader, I believe his name is 'Kraka-Jak Jackson'... dont let the bizzare name fool you.

"Cause weez the kidz..the KIDZ FROM HELL"

Spoliers:
There is a scene early in the 1st issue where the main character 'Barker' (He is a nod to Ben from NOTLD 68) squares off against the 'Kids From Hell', Barker pops an audio cassette into his cars player, hard ass heavy metal kicks in:

"DIE you FUCKERS-DIE you FUCKERS-DIE you FUCKERS! Die!"

Barker hits the gas, his car whips around the corner, then an UZI!! BLOWING the SHIT out of some of the KFH Zombie gang members!!! While the 'Metal Song' plays in the background...Cool SHITE!

Well I have to eat my words cause The Rising was publish a few years back and City of the Dead a few months back.

Check um out Dead one, they wont dissapoint. Like this comic book, Keene has a very interesting twist to his zombies. It isnt fully explored until City of the Dead, but I think its a breath of fresh air for the zombie genre.

Another interesting zombie book is Xombies by Walter Greatshell.
Its about a virus that attacks women before men and a girl who has a condition where she doesnt get her period hooks up with a lord of the flys like military group headed for Alaska to safety.
Pretty good read also.

If you live near a Books A Million or Barnes and Noble they should have. I saw at both stores and bought it a BAM.
