Brian De Palma has signed on to direct a prequel to his 1987 mob masterpiece The Untouchables.

The Untouchables: Capone Rising, as its title suggests, will be about the early life of gangster Al Capone, played in the original by Robert de Niro. The film will also feature Jimmy Malone, Capone's cop nemesis, who was played to Oscar-winning effect by Sean Connery.

The film will reportedly not feature Eliot Ness, the policeman who formed the Untouchables and who played a huge part in bringing down Capone from his position of crime king of Chicago.

De Palma, who has just finished work on the James Ellroy adaptation, The Black Dahlia, starring Josh Hartnett and Scarlett Johannson, replaces Training Day director Antoine Fuqua, who prior to his departure was reportedly seeking to tie down Sean Penn for the role of Capone. No casting news has yet been released.

As well as winning Connery his only Oscar, for best supporting actor, the original The Untouchables was nominated for Ennio Morricone's original score, best costume design and best art decoration.

It is just the latest in a tidal wave of prequels coming out of Hollywood following the relative success of the latest Star Wars trilogy. Batman Begins recently topped the box office in the US and later this year will see the release of Carlito's Way: The Beginning with Jay Hernandez in the Al Pacino role. A controversial prequel to The Exorcist was also released last year.

But who are they going to get to fill DeNiro's and Connery's shoes? I wouldn't want to be those actors.

well, im still not sure about this film but with De Palma on board it could end up being good (all his films that i have seen i have loved aside from the atrocity that is Mission To Mars)

It could be great but I couldn't help but think "Boy, has Brian De Palma's career gotten that desperate?" after reading that. The Untouchables is absolutely one of my favorite movies of all time and although this could be good, I'd rather they leave that great movie alone.

The next prequel will likely be

Scarface: The Wonder Years

I doubt it will feature Connery. But how can it have a prequel? Is it all about Capone?

Yeah, I think it's about Capone's rise to power.

Hmmm I'm not too sure about this one, it has great potential to be a stinker.

hmmmm.....has the possibility to go either way. I'll wait to see some plot synopsis and stills to make a decision one way or the other.

I don't see why they don't just make a Capone movie without making a direct connection to The Untouchables...it doesn't make sense to me. They'll probably put so much effort into foreshadowing the 1987 film that a story will fail to develop or be interesting at all...I think this is a bad choice.

The original Untouchables was AWSOME! I sure hope they get someone great to fit the shoes of the great Robert De Niro. I agrtee with Destruction that I have to see a plot synopsis and also and cast. Has the hope to be good but at the same time has the potential to be totally Wack!

But who are they going to cast???

Will it be some actors doing imitations of DeNiro and Connery? Or will the actors play the roles totally fresh, disregarding what has been laid down? Ideas?

I had heard rumours ages ago about Sean Penn possibly playing Capone, would he actually be any good as Capone?

Sounds like The Untouchables: Episode One

Personally, I hate prequels.

De Palma signing up for the Untouchables prequel, has definately sparked my interest.

It has potential.

Casting will determine how much potential.

I liked The Untouchables quite a bit but DeNiro was definitely the worst part of the movie. So, all the actor playing Capone has to do is give a better performance then DeNiro did and I'll be happy. However, that's not to say the person playing Capone will be a better actor overall...ah, I'll stop now.

I'm game for a prequel I suppose, although it's not really needed. It might be a good sign that De Palma is directing but after Femme Fatale who knows?

And I wonder if David Mamet will be writing the script?
