I was reading an interesting article on Movie City News about how top 10 lists will change in years to come because of the people making them....for example, it's a safe bet to say that AFI lists are made by people mostly in their 60's or 70's hence the classic films that grace the top....now don't get me wrong I like some of those flicks i.e. On The Waterfront, but what movies do you think will grace top 10's in 30 or 40 or 50 years..will it be the same group or movies being made these days..list the ones you think will be contenders..purely off the top of my head i'm gonna say The Shawshank Redemption, Memento, Return of The King, Fight Club, possibly ESOTSM,The Matrix, and hopefully Minority Report...there will probably still be the Godfathers and Star Wars
PS...on a somewhat unrelated note, I was watching Minority Report a couple nights ago and i got to thinking that in 2054, i'll be about the same age a Lamar...how depressing

If the AFI chooses to release an updated version of their list 20 or more years from now, no doubt it will be quite a bit different. I'd agree with The Shawshank Redemption being in the top 10. It seems to have become one of the most beloved movies of all-time by people of almost every age. It will only grow more popular as time goes by, and will be still be popular 50 years from now.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy will stand the test of time. The AFI has already shown its love for it by naming "The Fellowship of the Ring" the best movie of 2001, and both of the others in the trilogy made their top 10 list (and would probably have been #1 if they continued to name the Best Film of the Year after 2001). I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of the three movies showed up on an updated version of the AFI's list somewhere in the top 20, or maybe even the top 10.
I don't, however, think that any of the other newer movies you mentioned would make the list, with the possible exception of Memento. The Matrix, Eternal Sunshine, Fight Club, etc. are all love-it-or-hate-it movies, or "acquired tastes." Not movies that would appear on a list voted on by as many people as the AFI.
Post-1996 (the AFI's deadline for their top 100) that I could see making an updated version of the list:
-Saving Private Ryan
-American Beauty
-Memento
-Finding Nemo
-The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
-The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
-The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Movies that didn't make the AFI top 100 that probably would if they updated it:
-The Shawshank Redemption
-Toy Story
-Reservoir Dogs
-The Empire Strikes Back
-Manhattan
Movies on the list that would probably be higher up if they updated it:
-Pulp Fiction (would probably make the top 20)
-Goodfellas (would probably make the top 50, at least)
-Raiders of the Lost Ark (would probably move up to the top 50)
And some movies that are high on their list now will just never shrink in popularity, like Star Wars, The Godfather, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, etc. If the AFI updated their list 50 years from now, those movies would still be high up there.

Most of the movies I enjoy will be the ones gracing the top 100 or so in 20 years. I think Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, American History X, Pulp Fiction, Memento, and Reservoir Dogs will all be in the top 25 or so. I can't wait until the new breed of classics finally receive the credit they deserve, and don't get "patronized" for being just new wave.
