In the eyes of movie executives, it's clobberin' time for the attendance slide that has been throttling Hollywood for nearly five months.

And only a few films are left to lead the charge.

Fantastic Four hits screens Friday, and a lot is riding on the shoulders of the quartet who gain superpowers after a radiation accident. For 19 weeks, movie ticket sales have lagged relative to comparable weekends in 2004, a record. Even Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg couldn't end the moviegoing slump.

That leaves the fate of Hollywood's box-office world in the hands of Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards and his band of mutated astronauts: The Thing ("It's clobberin' time")/Ben Grimm, Invisible Woman/Sue Storm and Human Torch/Johnny Storm. (Related story: Despite expectations, this Fantastic cast remains cool)

Few films this year have come freighted with more expectations. Fans have been waiting decades for a Fantastic Four movie. A campy 1994 Roger Corman movie was made so Constantin Films could keep the film rights, but the movie was never released. Directors and writers have been dropped from the project over creative differences.

Already, distributor 20th Century Fox has committed to two FantasticFour sequels. At least 60 companies have merchandising tie-ins with the film. And Hollywood is hoping it can finally get a new comic franchise off the ground.

Marvel Studios chief Avi Arad says the wait will be worth it.

"This isn't like the other (comic-book) movies," he says. "It's not so dark. It's funny. It will be the feel-good movie of the summer."

And Hollywood hasn't had much to feel good about this season; ticket sales are off 12% compared with last summer.

Even if the slump does end, says Brandon Gray of Box Office Mojo, "it's too late (to catch up with last year's box office) this year. But whether it's Fantastic Four or someone else, it will be a chance to shake the stigma the studios are just turning out turkeys."

I don't doubt that it will do well. It's a big, fun-lookin' family film. Most of the people who are going to go and see it probably haven't read the complaints of the hard-core fanboys.

Eye-candy? The effects (save for the lightning and the Torch) are all pretty bad-looking, to me (ESPECIALLY Mr. Fantastic's stretching).
I think that F4 will be a semi-entertaining popcorn flick. I look forward to seeing Julian McMahon's performance, and that's about it.

Agreed about McMahon. I also think Chiklis will make a great Thing. I just people wouldn't be so quick to judge. Time will tell if F4 is any good.

I think itll do average. Not great, not bad.

...which is exactly how it looks. Average.

My hope is that itll lead into a great movie next time around like the overrated first Spider-man did with the EXELLENT Spider-man 2.

what i meant by eye candy is that there trying to make it a visual movie, to account for the horrible script and shitty ass dialog

If the studio heads think THIS is gonna end the slump...they had better keep dreaming.

Yeah. It will do well. Family films have been doing well the past 5 years.

This movie is going to do pretty well I think. I belive the movie is a feel good summer popcorn movie that people havent seen in a while. But as it was stated before only time will tell.

I'll be skipping this one, so the slump wont get any help from me this weekend.

F4 does look a little shitty. Out of all of the Marvel movies it looks the most plasticy, even more so than Hulk! I know that's what the comic books are like but it looks too cheesy. Dr Doom looks worse than the Green Goblin and the effects look dodgey. I agree with LoomisFan, Mr. Fantasic's stretching looks like a bad attempt. As for stopping the Box Office slump, I think Batman Begins and War of the Worlds are doing that (in the UK anyway). F4 won't stop any slumps, it looks to be somewhat of a flop like Daredevil was (again, in the UK).

FF isnt going to do shit to the so called Box Ofiice slump, id say that at best its up to King Kong and Harry Potter.

Hollywood is pretty moronic for thinking that things are going to be rosey EVERY single year anyway.

I fail to see how doing $113 million in the first 5 days of release is considered disappointing (referring to War of the Worlds). But I will tell you one thing: no way in hell is Fantastic Four going to stop this "slump."

I agree, 113 million dollars is more than I will ever make -- just because it didn't match up to people's expectations (going above the opening of SpiderMan 2) doesn't mean it's a horrible flop.

I honestly think Fox is putting all the advertising and marketing they can into FF because of the fear that beyond its first weekend, it's gonna bomb.

it'll make huge money then have a huge drop just like the hulk did - dark water will probably steal about 20-25 mil from it too

Look, the so-called "slump" will continue until about September. No weekend this summer will beat the same weekend from a year ago. Last year was just too good a year for movies: Shrek 2, Passion of the Christ, and Spider-man 2. And if Revenge of the Sith, Batman Begins or War of the Worlds couldn't do it, no movie will.

As for Fantastic Four, I'm going out of town this weekend for a week so I won't watch it until I get back in over a few days. So, I'm not going to help the "slumping" box office this weekend. My apologies to it :D.
