Clever topic, dead one. ;)

I can't recall if I've ever been to a drive-in. I know there used to be one around here when I was very young so I may have been taken there and not remember it now.

Sadly, most drive-ins are disappearing so the chance to experience one is dwindling. I always thought I'd be cool to have your house across from one like in The Monster Squad.

Some horror films that I would like to see at a drive-in include:

1) Halloween
2) Return of the Living Dead
3) The Monster Squad
4) Night of the Living Dead
5) Poltergeist
6) Deathdream

Man, I would KILL to see Halloween and Night of the Living Dead at the drive-in...and Return of the Living Dead would be hysterical too:D

Unfortunately I never got to see a horror movie at a drive-in and our local one just closed. But I would love to see Ruby, which is a horror movie that takes place at a drive-in and I've heard some good things about it.

I would have loved to see that at the drive-in.

I remember going to them as a kid and strangely enough I can't remember the flicks that I've seen there. At least in the NY drive-ins.

I do remember those that I've seen down here in FL and the last one that I saw was Blade II. A shame some assholes couldn't keep their damn lights off. But still, the drive-in is a fun and magickal place. ;)

I've been to a drive-in once, but I didn't see a horror film. I'm planning to go again soon since summer is upon us. I'd love to see a fright flick, sure, but it's not just the film itself that does it for me; it's the atmosphere. The greasy food, the starry sky, the night air...it beats the shit out of going to the local multiplex. It's fun regardless of what movie is playing.

I used to love going and turning my speakers up as loud as I could then jes' laying on the hood of the car or the truck bed and watching the flick. Fun times. :) I miss the good ole' days.

Exactly Count, you hit it out of the park...:D

We go for the experience of actually being at a drive-in, there is was something magical about seeing a movie under the stars.

Everyone should experience it for themsleves.

It doesnt always matter whats playing, granted I was a lucky little fucker growing up in 70's with Texas Chainsaw, Hills have Eyes and all the rest that dominated the landscape. Sure there was a ton of B and Z films that I saw at the drive-in, but it was mainly the fact that I was having a good time, thats all that mattered...

The Drive-In is and always will be a part of my life, my adolesence, the small moments in time that shaped my life.
For that I am forever grateful....an era that helped shaped the genre of horror.

But most of all, I really do appriciate each and every schmoe here that took the time to share their experiences and thoughts on this topic of Drive-In's :) :)

The one thing you could count on were those colorful 'BLOOD DRENCHED' Ad Campaigns that really told the story here, no WB pretty people with that 'deer in the head light stare' on these babies...Nope!

Just 100% pure HORROR!

I grew up going to the drive in as a little kid. I am in my 30's now, and on a horror-related note, let's just say that back in the 70's and early 80's, there was NO MERCY FOR THE YOUNG. I remember my folks taking me to see back-to-back Herbie movies at the drive-in. But in between the movies, during the intermission, they showed the trailers for movies like Zombie, The Antichrist, and The Omen. What the hell??? I was 7 years old. That's enough to scar a 7 year old kid for life.

Hey the dead one:

Drive Ins were the ultimate, all good experiences!

I remember going the drive in theatre with my Dad, Mom, Sister and myself as a little child. My sister and I would sit the back seat. We would wear our pajamas and bring our pillows and a blanket. At intermission, we would get out of the car and play on the gym in front of the drive in, just under the screen. I remember being mesmerized by the individual speaker hooked onto the car window thinking that technology was far into the future.

Horror films were a good experience at the drive in, since the monsters (other patrons) could be walking around trying to get into your car. Somehow you felt more vunerable in your car, than in a standard movie theatre.

As a little child, just driving by a drive in theatre and screen was pretty exciting, knowing that a good movie might be playing there. In those early days, there was no PG, PG-13, M, or X. We had regular movies and 'Adults only' movies.

As a teenager, taking my girlfriend to the drive in, was incredible, holding her, thinking what could happen....alone in my car! I'm sure other teenagers had the same hopes. Going out with a bunch of friends was fun too, since we could talk and crack jokes during the movie, without worring about being throw out by the usher.

What an 'cool & crazy' experience!

Good Evening!

Meltingman,

I really want to thank you for sharing in your great ‘Drive-In’ memories; you own experiences are stated with such enthusiasm and good vibes of a grand era. You and I seem to have quite a bit in common; my whole family would make our weekend pilgrimage to the Drive-Ins from Bucks County Pa. to New Jersey.

My sister and me also wore our pajamas and always-brought tons of blankets and pillows too! Hey it was fun with a capital “F”! The playgrounds were always fun for me as well; sometimes they actually had pony rides for a quarter.

I can still remember the ambience of being at a drive-in, the summer breeze and the sounds of crickets from the surrounding wooded areas. People would be with their families and that what it was all about, those memories are what keeps us young at heart…the best of times!

I freaking out here with this trip down memory lane…

How about Intermission time and the non-stop ads for other horror films and don’t forget those cool ass countdowns…

”10 minutes till show time folks”!

The in-car speaker was alive with the deep voice guy announcer…

”Hey it's time to head to the Snack Bar”…Ice cold beverages of all kinds…mouth watering Hot Dogs and Cheeseburgers…Hot Popcorn…and tasty assortments of candies of all kinds…what are you waiting for folks?

The Snack Bar is open!!! :D

Hell, I can still smell the hot dogs, French fries and cheeseburgers. Another plus was seeing those classic horror posters on the walls of the Snack Bar, like ‘Race With The Devil’, Count Yorga Vampire, The House That Dripped Blood and countless others.

My all time greatest experience at the drive-in was seeing ‘Night of the Living Dead’ back in 1970; I was only ten and let me tell you, that was the crossover for me. I was scared shitless because I had never seen anything like that before.

Like you said, Being in a car surrounded by the darkness of the night did bring on those feelings of vulnerability. When we arrived back home I was actually afraid to get out of the car, thinking the zombies would attack us before we could reach the front door!

Another film at the drive-in that falls into that uncomfortable category was “Count Yorga Vampire” which starred the very underrated Robert Quarry. There is a young couple making love in the back of their VW van, suddenly the girl opens a curtain from inside the van to reveal Yorga staring through the window…talk about feeling extremely vulnerable…

You really hit me right between the eyes with that brilliant observation, you said it better then I could buddy and you're 100% right about the rating system.

Which was very different back in the day…although I do remember ratings like “M” for mature audiences (which eventually became R) PG and PG-13 was non-existent…it was “GP” for the general public.

The films were bloody and violent nonetheless, it was an amazing experience having seen the films that have become the classics that withstood the test of time. Remember the classic drive-in double feature trailer of “I Drink Your Blood” and “I Eat Your Skin”?

You could always count on seeing a drive-in marquee showcasing 5 big films with the word ‘Blood’ in the title or of the living dead…”Curse of the Living Dead”…”Orgy of the Living Dead” and “Fangs of the Living Dead”.

You can’t beat an experience like that in a million years. There was something magic about those days, it’s really hard to find the words to describe such emotions.

When I was a teenager I went to the drive-in’s with my friends too, eventually I dated a girl named Barbara and took her to experience the drive-ins, as she had never been to one before, we always had a good time and you could count having your best girl pulling you closer while some poor guy or gal was being strangled, stabbed or mutilated. LOL!:D

Barbara eventually became my wife and we had 2 boys (Tony and Tyler) who we took to the drive-in’s every chance we got, I feel very strongly in sharing those experiences with my family, to give them the same great memories that will last for a lifetime…

There is nothing like being surrounded by friends and family, seeing films under the blanket of stars, having the best time of your life and not even realizing it. Yep, great times…

Drive Ins were the ultimate, all good experiences!
You said it ALL brother...thanks for taking time out to share your experiences!

All the best to you!
My fellow "Drive-In" schmoe:D

Take care and remember like Joe Bobb says...

Being an old fart myself. I had some good experiences at the drive-in.

I can remember seeing classics like Porky's, Flash Gordon and Bigfoot movies.

There was a period where it seemed like a different Bigfoot movie came out every week. The one I remember was like a doumentary. There was a renactment of a woman sitting on the couch, and bigfoot smashes his fist through the window behind the couch. Scared the bejesus out of me!

It's a real faded memory, but I think I remember seeing a trailer for Fritz The Cat one time. What a fucked up cartoon that was.

Since were on the subject of Drive-Ins.
Today, I had to shut down my business.
I was renting audio/visual equipment for presentations.
However, business was getting slower and slower, and it was costing me to keep it running (credit card and business bank accounts aren't free).

I made a good bit of dough while I was open. I don't have any of it left though, because I bought a house. But, I still have my equipment.
So, I plan on using it to start an At Home Drive-In Service or something like that. In other words. Im going to set up my stuff at people's houses and let them watch movies. I already checked and you don't need a licence to show movies at a residence. They will just be paying to rent the equipment.

I will also, try to creat good atmosphere with props and music before the show.

I'd really like to know what you think about this.

Hey SpongeBod,

Sorry to hear about your business, but at the same time
Starting an At Home Drive-In Service is very idealistic.

You really want to know what I think about this?

This could be a blessing in disguise, mainly because I believe in Entrepreneuring. Your idea is brilliant and could open up some doors for you. I realize that sometimes we are all-afraid to take risks, but what if were wrong? Because its the decision made that determine the final outcome, a wrong decision could lead to never having realized our fullest potential in life.

Drive-Ins are a major part of our culture, very Americana.

People are 'Nostalgic' at heart, I’m sure that anyone would love to relive their experiences through the inventiveness of an At Home Drive-In Service. It certainly has the virtue of having never been tried, the possibilities are endless!

Perhaps you should try to set up some kind of public exhibition of the "At Home Drive-In Service" at a pre-selected venue of course.

Its an avenue you should consider...hey Id pay for a service like that IF it was available to me...that’s a fact! Id fucking love it!

Look at it this way; I do believe things can happen for a reason.
It may be destiny that takes us down a different path. Go for it!
Just imagine running those films with intermissions and trailers from the grand days of the Drive-In Era!!

Get a patent to protect your interests...

Who knows where this could go?

You could be the next big thing...think about that!

You have my total support all the way...

This is a FANTASTIC idea!
:D

I'm glad you think it's a good idea, dead one.

If you look on the internet. You'll find outdoor movie companies.
The thing is. They have huge equipment that would cost a lot of bucks for someone to rent.

I want to make it where anybody could afford to do it.
Besides, I think poeple would get their friends and neighbors to chip in on something like this.

I already tried it at my house once. I don't have an outdoor screen yet, but I have access to all the fabric I need. That is what I used to try it out. When I get the ball rolling I will buy an outdoor screen off of ebay. They have all sizes.
The cool thing with the fabric I used is that you could see the movie on the back side of the material. I put it over my garage door opening. It was huge!
I got great reactions from people driving by the house. They all slowed down, and made remarks like "Hey! Check that shit out!"
You can't ask for better comments than that. I was showing Star Wars. You got to play it safe when the whole neighborhood can see it.
It also attracted a lot of june bugs.

The last drive in experience I had was with the movie House of Wax..... At least it was a horror movie, but man it stunk.... The drive in is nice, but it has been way to hot out here for any trips... Like 94 degrees at night... WTF?

The humidity has been absolutely B-R-U-T-A-L this month in Pennsylvania, but we had a break in the weather and it has been reasonably cooler the past few nights...

which is a perfect for a night at the ole' drive-in! ;)

Ah drive ins , i have such found memories of naked women , fistfights , melodrama, boobies , copious amounts of alcohol consumption , scary villians , great atmospheric music , zombies , criminal activity and the like , and that was just in the car , what was happening on the screen was an entirely different matter .

I go to a movie theater near me that is state of the art , with all the best stadium seating , widescreen images , and comfortable atmosphere you could ever want , but it sits on the same ground where i've had my best movie memories , it used to be a drive in .

So every time i go there , i can't help but think what it once was , and how much fun i had on that exact same ground on when i was some punk teen looking to have some fun during the weekend just watching a horror movie and hanging with my girlfriend in my own car at the drive in .

I really do miss that , drive ins were the thing at one time , and i'll trade in the fancy new theaters to experience that great feeling again , going there was magical , it was like a big block party that everyone was invited too . You could drink and smoke , and get a little frisky with your date . You could also lay on the windshield and watch the movie in the nice summer air , nothing beats that , i wish they would come back again , but i doubt it .

Another thing , i used to have my gf drop me off by one of the fences , drive in solo , and i wouldhop the fence and meet her at the concession stand . That worked great until i got caight with my pants down one time , when the security staff asked for our tickets :( . I guess they found it odd that a woman was constantly coming in by herself every weekend :) . Oh well , they got a good show at least .

Ummm... lame ass is two words.

:D Just kidding!

It's a great idea, but you may want to check and see how many decibles are aloud to be played without having the police tell you to turn it down, and that sort of thing. Plus you're liable to run into people's god damned animals, and make sure your shit is equipped for unkindly weather.

Damn! You hit it back, and I wasn't wearing my glove.

You're right, they just lowered the legal decible level where I live.
Fuckin' rap music ruins it for everybody.
I will probably have customers sign an agreement first.
No refunds, unless my equipment fails.

I thought about the weather thing. My speakers are outdoor speakers, so no worry there. The projector, receiver, laptop, etc. will be in a tool cart for quick and easy set up and take down.

I know I will run into a different set up situation at every place, so I'll just have to try to use my head (Aw, hell!) on whether it's a sutible location or not.

What would be great is if you thought it was too risky to pull it off after a survey of their land, use your own, or have a neutral spot that you're allowed to pull it off at.
