I was wondering, since it's everyone's favorite topic of discussion.

Those of you who love the "older" (by that I mean, pre-1985 at least) horror movies. Okay, imagine your favorite movies were going to be remade today (if they have been already, imagine they haven't) and you're like "OMG Dawn of the Dead remake?!" but then, the tooth fairy appears and after turning your car into a pumpkin, tells you: "No, wait, see. I'm so great, I'm going to let you assamble the cast and crew for the bloody movie."

So what would you do with what movie? What changes would you do? Who would you cast? Who would you put on the helm? Is there any way to make a remake worthy enough for you and your fellow horror fans to enjoy and respect?

Oh and, big thing (*giggles*). You can't choose anyone that worked on the original. You can't go "Damn, none other than Romero can do a Day remake, y'know?".

Oh for god's sake. You know what you've done? You've walked into a KKK rally and asked everyone what their ideal black guy would be like.
I'm going to go ahead and give a wild guess as to what the replies are doing to be, so . . . well hey, are you ready? All right then, here we go:

"What's my ideal remake of Dawn of the Dead? A movie directed by ROMERO and starring David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross and released in 1978.
Oh wait."

Oh right, and edit here, from what I've gathered the problem with remakes is more or less the principle of the thing. Which is why everyone whines even before they know anything or have seen the movie. The principle of yet another remake trying to ride the popularity of an old favorite of theirs bugs them.

But that's the idea. If you forced these fellows who love ze remakes, to make what the best possible scenario for a remake is, what would they say. I know it's the principle, I know they hate them, that's why I'm so interested in their replies.

I'd remake Underworld, Final Destination, Hellsing, and The End of Evangelion.

Now, if you were being clever and wanted to show me what it 'feels like' to have your favoirte movies remade. Well, sir! Let me tell you that I wouldn't mind seeing a remake for neither of those (EoE's americanized remake is coming along and I'm all excited about it!). I'd have some trouble telling you a director/cast to it, because I really wouldn't know. But it is a fact that I'd be interested in seeing a remake of any of those.

But fine! Keep up with the bold answers, why don't you! Now you'll only make C there think he's right. And we don't want that, oh no we don't.

But for another funny analogy.
If you had to kill your favorite kitty. How would you kill it?

Well, I'm happy for you. Really, I am. As C-Des touched on, it's not so much the final product that worries most of us. They're remaking Phantasm, and whether the updated version is worthwhile or not doesn't change the fact that the idea pisses me off. The horror genre wasn't built upon bilious regurgitation and mindless redacting. We'll never get another Halloween or The Exorcist if we keep mining the past to populate our future. Progress can only be achieved through innovation. The current spat of remakes is setting us back. The genre's momentum will be partially forestalled until major studios snap out of it.

I have a couple, actually.

1. Friday the 13th-As much as I love the movie, it's sooooo dated. I think it could use a little more character development. I think the last 20 minutes should be more crazy and violent, maybe have Alice end up like Sally at the end of TCM. I would also cast no one over 23 for the roles. I'd make it just as gory, if not gorier and I'd want it to be much more scary and have some real suspense(which it had, I just want more)

2. Prom Night- I also love this little slasher, but it could have been something more. I loved it's dread soaked atmosphere and Wendy's chase through the locked school is one of the best and more harrowing chase scenes I have ever seen. I'd like more developed characters and less of that pontless police sub plot that never amounts to anything. The film's death scnes were also flawed. I think they should have had more blood to get the full effect across. I would actully change most of the deaths in the film, they just were not that good. Change the theme of the dance, disco has been out for like 30 years.

3. Curtains- This is such an invintive slasher that I sometimes forget it's many plot holes and weirdness. I liked the cast and the ice skating stalk were amazing. Those are two things they have to have. A good cast and ice skating stalk. They could really put together a nice ensemble for the cast. I'd definatly jazz up the haracters. I just didn't feel anything for them. One character was so underdeveloped that I forgot her name and whne she comes back, she is abruptly killed. The last innocent character standing is also horrendously underdeveloped. Here I was watching her in this excellently creepy chase scene and I felt NOTHING. I didn't remember her name either. She just happened to be the final girl. The very end is perfect though, so good! The location is creepy and the hag mask is a must.

4. The Sentinel- Great supernatural thriller that gets ZERO attention fom anyone, despite it's impressive cast and creepy storyline. The cast is totally irreplaceable, they can't be matched these days. I'd like a little bit more creepy happenings that go on in the first part of the movie. I might like a bunch more scares. You see the movie is creepy as hell, it just doesn't have many scares. They should have more ghosts pop out or something.

5. Happy Birthday To Me- What a great 80's slasher, that no mainstream audiance member knows about. The cast was good, characters were strong, plot was great, and the twists were invintive. The deaths need much more though. I just found them lacking. The ending was also kind of odd, but I liked it. More actual scars, I didn't jump once.

6. Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte- Creepy Southern Gothic at it's finest. This would be a damn creepy remake with the right cast and director to helm it. It too needed more scares, suspense was great though.

7. Slaughter High- Think about how good this could have been with a better plot and real characters. I'd turn this into a gory psychological thriller. The plot and location are both creepy and the killer's mask was odd, but effective. The deaths and make-up effects were the best part. The mood is dark the entire time, which also helps. I don't think any young actress can replace the smokin' hot Caroline Munro ever!

I would remake Killer Klowns from Outer Space.
With Spielberg as directer, Tom Cruise and Katie Holms as the two lead. Tom Hanks as office Mooney. and all the Klowns are CG.
WOOOOOT!

I wouldn't remake it, but I'd love the long-mooted Near Dark sequel to become a reality. Ditch Caleb, Mae and Homer and just focus on Jesse, Severen and Diamondback and show how they formed their twisted family. Lance Henriksen's ideas on the ND documentary were awesome, it would be a great movie.

When a Stranger Calls---

The first ten minutes of the original were absolutely perfect, but I think it would be cool to use a variation on the babysitter urban legend by having two babysitters (one who goes upstairs to check on the kids but is attacked by the maniac, then crawls down the steps, her arms hacked off to warn her friend).

The middle half would be the surviving babysitter married, with children, who is being terrorized by the escaped madman. Then the cop is introduced and he tails the killer while he hacks up other babysitters. More character development of the killer would be revealed (he's killing babysitters because his parents kept leaving him with babysitters who were more interested in other things than taking care of him and it drove him insane).

The end half would be the final showdown between the first babysitter and the madman. Have her go all out to get rid of him, like in the Friday the 13th finales). So it would be more of a "true" slasher film than a mystery/crime drama.

I wouldn't cast any of the young flavors of the moment either in the leads, I would want more mature actors and actresses, like how they had Carol Kane and Charles Durning in the original.

I would like to remake the following movies:

Ghosthouse- While no classic by any means, this is an entertaining watch with some really creepy and unsettling moments. However, I would like to touch up the plot, dialogue, characters, special effects to vanquish some of the really idiotic moments of the film.

Demons III: The Ogre- I love this movie a lot. I find it very atmospheric and creepy. However, I hate the last 10 minutes that consist of the final confrontation. It feels rushed and is very lousy.

I hope it NEVER happens but a remake of Jaws...

Director - Frank Darabont

Chief Brody - Johnny Depp
Matt Hooper - Tom Hanks
Quint - Jack Nicholson
Mayor - Morgan Freeman

I doubt if they did remake Jaws they'd be able to get an all-star cast like that. Well, you know how remakes go, same setting, same story, a few new scenes here and there. There you go, a brand new Jaws with a computer-animated shark.

I'd redo EMPIRE OF THE ANTS with maybe Nicolette Sheridan in the Joan Collins role. It's a great campy flick that is definitely outdated. I would keep the same basic story, but add a little more diversity to the characters. Maybe the group could be going on a tour of historical sites instead of checking out real estate.

I also would like to do a new take on SLAUGHTER HIGH, but make it a bit more sophisticated. I would also make it a little more psychological, and maybe have the killer's MO be that of what was done to him in the past. I also think a better cast would help it out. I like keeping the ending of no survivors.

actually X, Helsing is being remade already.
the series that is out now strayed from the original manga that it was based on, which pissed off the creators a little bit. so now their remaking it, and staying true to its roots. and if you thought Alacard was badass before, you havent seen anything yet.;)

...by the way, if you have your doubts about what just wrote, take a look at the july issue of Wizard magazine, the article is in there.

the Helsing Group's official fister I know all about the Hellsing OVAs. But I don't really consider it a remake. I like to think of them as . . . a new season. But yeah, apparently we're getting Millenium and some more manga only stuff. I read little of the manga so I'm not totally clueless on the plotline.
