News from Joblo.com:

Thomas Jane recently spoke to Sci Fi Wire about the upcoming PUNISHER sequel, titled THE PUNISHER 2. As far as the trivial stuff like director, writer and anything about the movie's plot, Jane very wisely said "he wasn't at liberty to say". He did, however, give some keen insight into his work-out regime, mentioning that he'd been working out for 7 weeks and had packed 12 pounds of muscle for the movie - the reason being that production is expected to begin before the end of the year. He further mentioned that he'd like to see the movie "go more in the direction of a film like Taxi Driver. I'd like the audience to be able to visit the mind of this guy. The potential for The Punisher—especially when it comes to the real juicy stuff—should go more in the direction of a gritty, urban street drama like Taxi Driver rather than a glossy, fantasy direction like the X-Men". Wow, that's a pretty good idea for the sequel. If only they were filming a sequel so…wait a minute…did he just…that sneaky bastard! Read more of what he had to say over here (http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?category=0&id=31533)

UPDATE: According to the latest edition of Wizard magazine (August 2005, #166), producer Gale Anne Hurd said of this film, "Tom Jane is onboard, and Jonathan Hensleigh is writing and directing..." Hensleigh is the same man who wrote/directed the original PUNISHER.

Great news. Although many people didn't seem to like the first, I loved the movie. I loved the way they did away with the glossy-ness the other Marvel movies had and went flat out darker. The sequel alot like the feel Taxi Driver, a good movie. I heard this would be set in a city (New York I think) and I'm hyped already now hearing that Hensleigh and Jane are back. Anyone else looking forward to this or will the lack of attention the first one got put you off?

i really enjoyed the Punisher and would be happy with a sequel (although id prefer a sequel to one of the other Marvel films instead)....i just hope they dont include some comic relief characters like they did with the first one since it should be serious and not funny

I'll watch the second one, I just hope that it's better than the first movie, which I though sucked.

I had high hopes for The Punisher, but was a little dissapointed it was just some boring origin story that wasn't all that different from any revenge themed action movie (see also Walking Tall, any Steven Seagal movie, etc.). Hopefully Punisher 2 will be the movie The Punisher should have been.

That's what I thought was so good about the original 1989 version. It really captured the idea that this guy is truly a sociopath - and a bit nutty - in order to do what he does. Dolph Lundgren may not be a good actor, but he nailed that one.

I'm glad they're keeping Hensleigh to direct.

And where's that Punisher Director's Cut? The DVD mentions a 30 minute subplot that was cut out. And of course there was nothing of it in the 60 seconds worth of deleted scenes... so a DC can't be far behind. Probably the Tuesday before Punisher 2 hits theaters, including a free ticket to the movie.

The Punisher was such a typical action movie.

i'd watch a sequel and i plan on checking out the DC coming out for the first one, my only complaint with the first one was that i wish it was more violent, ya know, there wasn't enough blood, but i didn't enjoy the first one, but like i said i plan on picking up the directers cut coming soon

This is great news. Loved the first Punisher. I actually just listened to the commentary track the other day. Hensleigh said that the second one would be in a much more urban area like Chicago or New York. And the 30 minute sub plot was never shot I think. He mentioned that they wanted to do an intro with Castle fighting in Kuwait, but they didn't have enough money. And that would have set up for a whole nother sub plot involving Castle's FBI partner that was hardly in the movie. It sounded very interesting. When there were rumors of a director's cut, I think they said they were going to film those scenes during production of the second film. That's the most effort I've ever seen put into a double dip.

Well, the behind the scenes stuff on the DVD shows some of the fotage they cut from the FBI subplot, with Joe Morton I believe. Hensleigh said his original cut was something like three hours, but felt the movie was just too heavy to drag out even to two and a half hours, so they cut that part out. But as far as I know, it was filmed.

eh, the only thing that would have me GUARANTEED in the theater opening day, would be grabbin' Dolph Lundgren somehow for a cameo, maybe as a villain to fight Jane? Not the MAIN villain, but something like Kevin Nash's character in the first.

That would be good, it wouldn't hurt the film. I'd also like to see a small (and I mean tiny) nod to the other Marvel movies. A newspaper in the background mentioning Spider-Man would be good, as the two appeared together in the comic books. Nothing too big, a single shot just for us fans.
