We all know that Hitchcock, Kubrick, Welles, Kurosawa, etc. never won an Oscar for directing, but at least they were all nominated at one point or another. Who do you think are the best directors to never even be nominated for a Best Director Oscar?

Some of my own choices:

Still living:
Hayao Miyazaki
Tim Burton
Rob Reiner
Jean-Luc Godard
Spike Lee
Terry Gilliam
Paul Thomas Anderson
Lars von Trier

Too late:
Sergio Leone
Sam Peckinpah
Vittorio De Sica
Fritz Lang
Charlie Chaplin
Henri-Georges Clouzot
Jean Cocteau

I'm sure there's more, but I'll leave them up to everyone else to name...

Zhang Yimou

The man should've at least been nominated for Raise the Red Lantern and Red Sorghum

Werner Herzog
Luis Buñuel
Robert Bresson
Nicolas Roeg
Alain Resnais
Michael Powell
Wim Wenders
Andrei Tarkovsky
Yasujiro Ozu

Of course, had they been nominated, they'd be saddled with the "nomination is your prize" rule like they did with Antonioni, Truffaut, and Malick because they couldn't ignore the critical acclaim that surrounded the films the year they were nominated. And you have your Bergman's and Fellini's who were automatically guaranteed a nomination because everyone knew who the hell they were.

Tim Burton should get one.

Then again, this is from the guys who gave Eminem more oscars then Scorsese.

I know you were exagerrating for effect, but I'd like to see Scorsese, in a move more desperate than making The Aviator, try his hands in a different category hoping to sneak an Oscar.

Sadly I was not.

Eminem won in 2003 for best song: 'Lose Yourself'

Martin has been nominated for best director 4 times...none of the have been wins.

I was going to say the Coen brothers, but I'm pretty sure they got nominated for Fargo. So in that case, along with pretty much all of the ones people have submitted so far, I'll add Wes Anderson, one of my favorites.

Oh. Well, had Eminem won his Oscar for Best Direction, than there's a problem.

I also choose Spike Lee. I can count at least twice he should've gotten nominations.

Also has David Lynch ever been nominated?

I know David Lynch was nominated for Blue Velvet, and maybe for Mulholland Dr. or The Elephant Man, as well. Agreed on Bunuel.

I know the very thought of that sounds lame and rather gimmicky of the Academy but I will tell you this: Cher deserved that Oscar. A very, fine subtle performance that I think gets overlooked because people are upset at the very notion that Cher, that annoying singer, actually got an Oscar.

Also ditto to whomever said Spike Lee. I've only seen Do the Right Thing, and with that he should've at least been nominated. I'm not too quick to give him the award however, because there was a lot of fine direction in 1989. (Woody, Jodorowsky, Greenaway, etc.)

Sorry to get off topic, but I had to comment on this. I think this is a ridiculous statement. Eminem won an oscar for best original song, not director. You can't compare the two categories. And also, Eminem actually deserved that oscar. I'm not a fan of rap, but I think Lose Yourself is a pretty fantastic song.

I have to as well jump on the Spike Lee bandwaggon. I believe though that his documentary "4 little girls" was nominated for best documentary. I am very suprised that Spike hasn't been nominated for any of his feature films. Both "Do the right thing" and "Malcom X" were great films. Especially "Malcom X" which is one of my personal favorites.
