View Full Version : Favorite Gangster Movie

What's your favorite Mafioso flick?
Mine's gotta be Scorcese's Goodfellas. This one has it all; a great story, great pacing, wonderful soundtrack, and fucking brilliant editing. This is all complemented by an ensemble cast that give their career performances. This is the one that put Ray Liotta on the map with his unforgettable portrayal of mobster Henry Hill. Robert DeNiro is sinister and perfect in his role as Jimmy "the gent". But the real show stealer here is Joe Pesci as the dangerous and psychotic Tommy:
"What am I? A clown? Am I here to amuse you?"
IMO, the best gangster movie EVER.

While GOODFELLAS is a much more accurate depiction of the mob, I don't think any mob movie compares to THE GODFATHER, even though GOODFELLAS kicks ass (it comes in a close second).

Other:
Mine, so far, is probably THE ROARING TWENTIES (1939), brilliantly directed by Raoul Walsh and starring James Cagney in one of his finest performances. I also loved the screenplay.

Special Note to Mr.Blonde: Scarface was not released in 1981. It was released in 1983.

The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. But I also love The Untouchables, Goodfellas, The Godfather Part III and Road to Perdition.

And it is definitely a lot better than De Palma's version, which is a piece of shit.
I voted for The Godfather

Well I have to vote for Resevoir Dogs or Goodfellas, because as most of you schmoes know, if you know me at all, is that I think Godfather is tremendously over rated. I think I have to go with the Goodfellas though.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I do not consider Pulp Fiction a mob/gangster movie. I mean, it kind of is, and I could see how you could think it was...but to me a ganster/mob movie is really Goodfellas, Casino, Godfather etc.

Even though I still would've gone with THE GODFATHER, I still think BUGSY could've made that list.

I agree that it's more than just a gangster movie, but more than two thirds of the film is perpetuated by gangsters so it's still definitely a G flick. That and it is so iconic that it had to be on the list.

where's donnie brasco?
pacino's performance in donnie braso is a better performance than what he did in the Godfather films. it is low key and sad, and at times pathetic. he makes you feel sorry for the guy. the fact that he comes into this movie with all the baggage of the Godfather films makes it even that much better.

MILLERS CROSSING (9.5/10) is my fave BUT
I do feel Coppola's THE GODFATHER (9.5/10), Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA (9.5/10), Tarantino's RESERVOIR DOGS(9.5/10) and Scorsese's GOODFELLAS (9.5/10) are the finest contemporary gangster films.
BUT
There are far to many classics I adore and watch repeatedly and cant rule out......................a few examples off the top of my head
John Woo's A BETTER TOMORROW
Abel Ferrera's THE FUNERAL & KING OF NEW YORK
Honorable mention to-
Stanley Kubrick's THE KILLING
John Huston's THE ASHPHALT JUNGLE
Raol Walsh's WHITE HEAT or anything he did with Cagney or Bogey
Delmer Daves THE DARK PASSAGE
Terence Young's THE VALACHI PAPERS
Micheal Cimino's YEAR OF THE DRAGON and Ridley Scott's BLACK RAIN or Sydney Pollack's THE YAKUZA?? Do these qualify
STATE OF GRACE & BOONDOCK SAINTS??
Some British contenders??
Mike Hodges GET CARTER
John Mackenzie's THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY
SEXY BEAST
Sorry its too tough & broad a topic to call an overall champion for me...

This is a really though choice for me, but I would have to vote for Goodfellas. Goodfellas has it all and Joe Pesci (I think that's how you spell his last name) just steals the show.

My order for this list:
1.) Godfather + Godfather II
2.) Goodfellas
3.) Scarface
4.) Casino
5.) Pulp Fiction
6.) Reservoir Dogs
7.) Carlito's Way
8.) Once Upon a Time in America
9.) Untouchables
10.) Miller's Crossing

Carlito's Way, although I do think like mcquade that Pacino's performance in Donnie Brasco is brilliant. He really moves me everytime on this movie, especially the "his heart stops like a clock" scene. This film also have my favorite scene from Michael Madsen : ("I'm the skipper now, I GOTTA ANSWER!").
But in the end, I prefer Carlito's Way, a movie that always made me feel as sorry for this missed redemption (the french title is rather good by the way it's "The Dead End") and pissed of against that damned Benny Blanco ^^

The Godfather.
Just when I was out, they pulled me back in. The granddaddy of gangster films, imo.

I'm a dedicated Goodfellas fan, but The Godfather comes in so damn close. I love them both to death.

While I think Goodfellas is by far the best gangster movie (and The Godfather right behind it), I had to go with Reservoir Dogs because I can remember watching this movie when I was 14, not knowing who Quentin Tarantino was, who half of the actors were, and so forth, yet I just knew that it was a fantastic movie, and that it was destined to be my favorite.

My favourite is Goodfellas, followed closely by OUATIA and the godfather.
mcquade, i agree with everything you said.
Donnie Brasco is an underrated masterpiece and pacino`s character is so pathetic.

In that order. The De Palma version of Scarface has always been a terrible movie, in my opinion.
