PLATOON, it may not be a better film than the rest of them, but it really hit home for me. It's my favorite by a razor thin margin.

For me, it would have to be Saving Private Ryan by far. Superbly done, an absolute war masterpiece. Band of Brothers is the only one that can top it for me... but it wasn't an option. :D

Do Lawrence of Arabia or Doctor Zhivago count as war movies?
If not, then The Thin Red Line it is, though I voted Apocalypse Now since Thin isn't on here.

Apocalypse Now is such a better film than Saving Private Ryan. I mean, the first 20 minutes of SPR are amazing, but the rest seemed just "meh"... In 1998, I thought the best war movie of the year was Enemy at the Gates, so that pretty much sums up my feelings about Spielberg's film. Still, Apocalypse Now hands down.

It has to be Saving Private Ryan. Seeing my grandfather (a man who was the biggest hard ass in the world) cry during the opening beach scene tells me enough. This film was beyond fantastic. 10/10.
